Called in here after the Catts just up the road. Totally different, moastly food, not welcoming, and Harveys Best £3.80 a pint - that is just a piss take even for an exceptional pint (and it wasn't!!)

Just a comment about the reviews for this pub. I'm sure all of them are well meant and true. I wonder sometimes though if reviewers are looking at pubs from opposite directions. Restaurant "types" look at the pub as an eating establishment and sometimes make no allowance for the fact that the pub is still a drinking establishment - with all its attendant behavioural issues. Drinkers sometimes regard the diners as intruders and "not pub people". I think this where the clash occurs in the reviews. I have yet to visit this pub (so maybe I shouldn't be posting) but so far the reviews would not put me off. Indded, I'm encouraged by them. The pub lists its real ales (something some pubs don't do which is bizarre if you think about it) which is great. It also seems to have retained its pub atmosphere(some have lost theirs. I will certainly visit when in the area.

Had steak here last week, completely uninspiring, and the landlord is cringeingly obsessed with the local USA 'celebs' at the expense of locals who should be his bread and butter since they will still be here when the 'celebs' have cleared off back to the good ole USA.

Just to comment on "terrible - 10 Apr 2010 08:37" who posted a bad review, I was that friend being "chased" through the pub, the landlord and his 5 friends(don't know where you got 20 from) are all ex-servicemen, who for the first time have met up since serving in the Gulf war and other conflicts and tours of duty around the globe. The other patrons (locals and first timers) in the restaurant became aware of this and even brought drinks for us, and chatted to us at the bar about our experience's. I myself ate at the restaurant, and I have to say the meal was absolutely fantastic. Starter , main course and cheeses were a culinary delight. Full of flavour and all served at the same time. The food is not your average boring pub food but full of rustic taste, and nothing deep fat fried. The landlord and his head chief spend time and passion researching every item that goes on to their menu (a bit of a shock, as the landlord never expressed his love for food as a serviceman). I myself now work in Soho, London and entertain clients regularly, the food in The Kings Arms would not be out of place there in some of the best restaurants in that area, and I have recommended them on numerous occasions, as it is worth the travel from London. Plus I have never been to a more friendlier place, as the locals welcome you with open arms. One more thing, would you trust a review from someone who hides their profile information. Recently had a meal for 6 in this pub after recommendations from friends. 2 meals were good, 2 were ok and two were disappointing (not good).
Service was slow and out of sync with the meal - i.e. despite ordering drinks, wine not appearing until 1/2 way though first course and then having to be requested again
But the worst thing about the whole thing was the level of noise coming from the bar area; to the extent that one could not hear people at the same table in the restaurant. Turns out that the worst offender was the publican himself who had 15-20 of friends in and was himself shouting jokes at the top of his voice. Also, one of his friends being chased by a girl around the restaurant because he had stolen her shoe - after all who cares about those in the restaurant because one gets the impression they are only there on sufferance.
This pub seems to be run for the benefit of the publican and his mates to the exclusion of paying restaurant customers. Frankly until the pub changes its ways or sorts out this issue probably worth giving it a miss

Went in for a carvery luch on Sunday and it was quite good value and well cooked, only criticism is it was all a bit 'brown' - no greenish colours on the plate so, it seemed a bit drab. Decent pint but no drinkers in the bar once the diners had gone.

Big pub with a very good value restaurant that serves gigantic portions. Have to say I don't like the atmosphere over much. Staff miserable. Punters miserable. Dog friendly, but how long can you talk to the dog?. Beer well kept, but the whole thing could do with a charm offensive.

Local, lounge and restaurant areas. Beers well kept. Food especially good - cracking quality, good value, large portions and wide, interesting choice (lamb shank in red wine is our favourite).
One of the few places locally that do food on a Sunday evening.
The landlord has recently added to his Chesterfield sofa collection (he's rather proud of them!), so now has three. One is just by the large open fireplace, and well worth bagging, as the food can be eaten in the lounge as well as the restaurant area.
Good parking. Only once had an an issue with the landlord being a bit terse to a guest of ours, but as it was only once in about a dozen visits, we wrote it off as one of those days..

Busy Friday Nights with well priced good quality food. The Lasagne is to die for!

Tip: Make sure to book a table for food on Fridays and Saturdays.
