I used to travel in to London to see the bands here and met people from all over the world. Another part of our heritage lost forever.

Hideous paint job and gigantic picture of Pete Doherty cursed this pub, it is now a goth shop or something. Other pubs beware!
PeoplesPalace - 25 Oct 2007 16:29
Disgracful.
As has been said below.
before we know it we will all be drinking in yates, wetherspoons and other such crap chain pubs.

This pub had its ups and downs over the years, despite a few run ins with the staff over their customer service i couldnt help but keep going back.

Last year saw a refit come along, with plenty of toilets and longer opening hours.

Unfortunatly a hideous paint job and unnessesary name change on the exterior, along witha giant poster of pete doherty also appeared.

However Sundays were excellent there, but unfortunatly it would appear they broke the bank, there's me and two friends thinking of going into the castle for a pint only to discover it has been turned into a hippies clothes shop.

A clothes shop with about 20 toilets in it.

Who is to blame?

The manager?
The landlords?

or the freeloaders who came in on sundays to listen to the superb music and wouldnt buy a single drink.

A very very sad day for camden indeed.

So Dan the manager as gone - at last! Nasty attitude. We played 3 sets, honouring our booking even though we nearly all had serious flu) & went down a storm. We were banned!!! His attitude sucked. No explanation offered when politely queried why his attitude was, rude, surley & dismissive. We had played there many times before it all changed, & suffered the whole initial 50 & a the jug trip. I recall the staff having the hump when u rammed it as they had to work hard till the bell. Marcus re-booked us.
Looks like it's now an indie band meat-market & not worth the hassle.

What. On. Earth have they done to this place? Used to be a nice, slightly sleazy bar with lots of live music.

From the outside it now appears to be a gay icecream parlour. Such vile decor outside I didn't have the heart to go in.

Feels like it's trading on its history a little too much, but worth popping in nonetheless. Good meeting point and handy for post-shopping Guinness.

Great place to see live bands and a bog standard but likeable boozer the rest of the time.

Absolutely disgusted. Went to the Caernarvon with a native american friend who runs a shop in the market to watch Metal Works. He popped out briefly and not only was he denied re-entry but was assaulted by the doorman. Apparently the flute he carries was not allowed (he's Cherokee and apparently it's part of his belief - I have no idea but it's hardly a weapon, he's carried it for the last 14 years and he's been drinking there for the last 5 years which hasn't been a problem... and he wasn't playing it there). Now I have no idea what the problem was and ended up drinking elsewhere. Given that the pub are happy to have glass bottles, glass drinking glasses, loud, boisterous, aggressive punters and general mayhem I have no idea what their problem is with a hippy-looking american indian. Maybe they don't like people with dark skin in there...

This is a really great pub for live music - I went there a couple of months ago and saw a band called The Franks who were excellent as well as every other band who played that evening. Is a really good place to go with a group of mates for an evening out.

A joke - bar staff with attitude and the manager needs to learn some good customer service

My first choice drink was off. My second choice drink was also off. At whichj point I decided to drink elsewhere - wise move

The place looks like it is never cleaned - scruffy staff with attitude. Geat a life !

I come here on Sundays every few months or so. It has a decent casual crowd unlike the Soho rock scene which is far to clicky. It gets packed though but it's worth it; the Metal Works band which play there on Sundays are brilliant and play all the best metal tunes; especially my favourite AC/DC. Highly recomend to any one to see them, but like I said it is rammed. Any way got to go it is Sunday and I'm off out. Guess where!

Used to prefer it as the Fusilier and Firkin (I miss the all day sessions on Dogbolter when I was a student) however still a worthwhile watering hole for the area. I've seen some great bands and some truly terrible ones in here over the years - although shan't plug my own band here as that would be in poor taste...

I went to this pub a few months ago and had a wonderful night. It was their Friday night band showcase, and I went along expecting to see the same old silly rock sounds I've become accustomed to in this area. In to my 3rd or forth pint, on came a band called 23FRAMES. Let me tell you, this group blew my hat, socks, scarf & balaclava off (it was a chilly evening). I was simultaneously shaked, choked, grooved-up and moved to my core by their blistering, twist-ankled, fiery blaststorm of a set.
The actual pub itself, the decor and whatnot,is pleasant and perfectly conducive to all round public-house recreation and enjoyments.Recommended.

Cruised along here last saturday night to do a recce (my band BENIHANA are headlining here on Friday 2nd September '05 - come enjoy some groovy stoner rock!). Looked like it'll be a cool place to play a gig, and the bar staff were real friendly. Shame the headlining act for that night had cancelled, but that's not the pub's fault.
Solid pub, although disappointed that there weren't any ales on when I was there.

northernbellyjaby - 5 Jun 2005 21:43
Ah yes such fond memories...1988 I was fortunate enough to experience this legendary London pub on a Sunday afternoon session from 12 -3pm with other Kiwis and some English hosts. WOW what could I say! The band who played must've all been in their late 40's and could they pump out the rhythm and blues! Our crew basically were already screwed from Saturday night so it only took a couple of pints before we were at it again...atmosphere was unparalled! I was 25 at the time...as the pubs closed at 3pm on Sundays back then we'd cruise round to a flat and carry the party on with goodness knows whatever else happened to be on the menu!!!Then re-visit the pub again at 6 pm when they opened again...all in all...great Sundays were had by all!
Blackscorpion - 17 Nov 2004 03:37
Saw the best rock covers band there on Saturday night (30 Oct 04). Sweetleaf! Excellent venue for such an excellent band - all the classics (Purple,Sabbath,GNR)

Check them out on 27 Nov & 18 Dec.

Beer was surprisingly cheap for London!
Gem - 2 Nov 2004 12:58

It's not a bad pub at all. Never adverse to some live music on the weekend.

decent pub, decent food and beer... good live music.
Glen - 1 Sep 2004 17:13
I really this place, seen quite a few good bands here as well. Gets packed on a friday for the live music...
Terri - 1 Sep 2004 15:41
More bloody people talking about their band and not the pub.

One of those places it's easy to walk past. Gets full when the markets are on, but pretty empty a lot of the other time. I've looked through the window and seen more people on stage than in the audience. And it wasn't the Polyphonic Spree playing.
travis - 31 Aug 2004 14:39
I'm sure the live music is great, but at lunchtime they were playing Coldplay. But at least they were open, which is more than you can say for The Hawley Arms 'round the corner. Pretty good food, average beers and a pool table, along with a few young rock 'tourists'.
Owen - 25 Jun 2004 16:56
