When a Wetherspoon's is done properly, they can be excellent places to spend your hard-earned cash on a few pints and a bit to eat in a comfortable environment. When Wetherspoon's go wrong (Or "When Wetherspoon's Attack! as Channel 5 will one day doubtless bill a behind-the-scenes reality TV show about them) you get this place which is frankly abysmal.
First off, it smells. As soon as you walk in there is some kind of dank rotting smell that permeates your nostrils and makes you regret your decision to enter. Secondly, the service is at a pace which glaciers might look at and say "Blimey they're taking their time". Thirdly, a lot of their draught drinks seemed to be off when I was in there greatly limiting the range of drinks which is one of the almost universally acknowledged benefits of going to a Wetherspoon's in the first place.
The positives such as they were consist of a fairly nice building in a good location, an acceptable meal and as ever cheap prices, but I found myself thinking I would have happily paid more if the service was better and the basic maintenance on the environment and stock of drinks had been taken care of. Avoid.

Roomy JDW pub near the train and bus stations. Some cask ales on, reasonably priced - and for food the usual JDW pub grub - can’t remember if I ate there though, the menu is the same everywhere.

Went in early on a wet evening. There's a massive flight of stairs which leads down to the bar area, and I managed to slip on the top one and fall down all of them, much to my embarrassment. The manageress was very good at making sure I was still in one piece (I was, but some CDs in my backpack weren't) and that it went in the accident book. The cheap, good beer and reliable food helped to soften the blow. On the Saturday after Gloucester v Bath I half thought about going in again, but decided not to after I could hear the noise of the celebrating rugby fans a couple of streets away...

Since my last comments this pub has improved: a lot cleaner and more staff behind the bar. The real ale is good and very cheap but don't bother trying the Guinness. Still lots of room for improvement ...

This used to be an acceptable place for a cheap pint before retiring to a proper tavern for the real pub experience. However, lately Ive found the place to be a real dive with loud swearing locals, dirty plates with half finished meals strewn across the tables and long queues at the bar waiting to be served by the ever changing harassed staff. As an ex-cinema its still big enough to find a quiet table away from the rabble but youd have to be desperate...

I can't help but like Wetherspoons for their reasonable prices, ale is well kept, food is good, the only let down with this ex cinema is the sheer size of it! A few cosy areas near the entrance open out into one of the largest areas of public bar I have ever been in! Never had a problem getting a seat, never had a bad pint! Well worth a visit

Busy with good selection of ales. Looking around it is in need of refurbishment. Worn out carpet, sticky tables. No fault with food & beer though!

Late review from November. Not the first time here, but the first time I have seen the gorilla and the biplanes and the great skyline of skyscrapers. Very impressive. Enjoyed the beers too.

Long established Spoons now marketed as a Lloyds. Made out of an old cinema. Not the horror movie it could be-a few decent staff seem to stop it slipping into oblivion. Better kept and better range of ale than the Water Poet. I suppose a mid-range spoons would be the best description. The 3 lasagne was good, and the Mauldons silver adder was a surprise and a delight.

well, I love the food!! they've got very good range of beers. nice atmosphere, good pub to start a night out on fri and sat. But there is one thing. THE SERVICE ON FRI AND SAT!!! ITS ALL C**P!!! there is one guy, somebody told me he's polish. all I know they call him Mike. He's like clearing 20 people off the bar in 5-7mins. So the word of advice: EMPLOY more foreigners cause they work twice as hard as english!!!!

Over worked and stressed bar staff. Cheap drinks and not a bad atmosphere.

this is a good place to start on a night out, the food and drink is satisfactory, and very cheap. the main problem with the regal, as with most spoons pubs is the popularity, they get so crowded and this is no exception.
coopsy88 - 17 Aug 2006 16:15
It's a Wetherspoons. It's always been okay when I've gone in before, but the standard of the real ale was poor this time, we had to return a pint of Moles and the rest of the pints were iffy.Nice building, looks as though it would be quite pleasant to sit outside in the summer, other than that pretty average.

Can get very crowded!! Good meeting point for a saturday night drink. Cheap drinks, friendly staff lacks background music

Converted cinema... nice. I like this pub. Reminds me of a cruise ship on the inside.

what a pub and what a night. went to see gloucester play rugby and was taken to the regal by locals- very friendly cool place cheap drink and the girls behind the bar were stunning and the lads very funny!

Wetherspoons which, despite it's cavernous size manages to be light and airy. Distinctive drinking areas on three levels and an outdoor decking patio on two levels, Decent beer range and quality. Overall, worth a visit. Voted 7

This place is alright if you just want to get wasted. As a weatherspoons its always crowded on fri and sat. Long delays to get served.

Old cinema. Looking passed the cheap drinks for once: Quite nice for a Whetherspoons pub, and never *too* crowded.
