I recently made two visits to the Rose and Crown, in late November. One in the evening and once during a lunch time session. The Rose and Crown Is a Cosy, traditional style Pub, with a “gay” or “gay friendly” Clientele and staff team.
Sunday 24th Nov. Evening. Quiet, relaxed and what appeared a regular clientele base. Couples and small groups, mainly bottled wine drinkers, sedate and comfortable but lacking any real atmosphere. Bar staff on shift this evening, somewhat unengaging with customers, appeared to be pre occupied with messaging or viewing something on his smart phone.
Tue 26th Nov. Lunch time. Very quiet, just few other Clients, less than half a dozen. Roast beef Lunch. Well presented, very reasonably priced. Beef Luke warm, Potatoes scalding hot, vegetables cold. Bar staff appeared aloof to the point of unfriendly. Didn’t acknowledge our complements, thank you or good bye. Possibly, this pub is only suitable for its regular clients, as we were made to feel like intruders rather than welcome customers. On the whole, disappointing

I was a regular visitor to Nevada St. in the late 1970s, and sometimes whiled away the odd hour in the Rose and Crown. You'd stumble across the occasional luvvie doing the same: Susan Hampshire was one I recall.

Doesn't seem to have changed that much really. I've kept across a few Greenwich pubs when passing through, and found it well worthwhile.

Had a very nice lunch here - fish and chips. Beer sampled was fine and service efficient and friendly. Good Victorian décor. (Whilst in this part of Greenwich worth visiting the small, quirky but interesting fan museum a couple of doors up the hill).

A NICE PUB WITH A GOOD ATMOSPHERE AND USUALLY A GOOD VARIETY OF LOCALS. BEER IS NOTHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT THOUGH .ARE THESE THE DEEPEST TOILETS IN EUROPE ONE WONDERS ? NOT SURE IF THIS PUB IS STILL A GAY ONE OR NOT BUT I DONT THINK IT IS .I THINK THE PRINCE OF GREENWICH HAS TAKEN OVER THIS MANTLE

Nice enough, large roomed pub, situated just off the main road passing through Greenwich, and worth the very small detour. They offered a reasonable amount of, albeit fairly common ales, but the place was full and the atmosphere was good.

Decent enough Victorian style pub next to the theatre.
Food ok, salad not too filling but then it was a salad. Nice enough crowd.

Truly awful. Went in there after the olympics and ordered a half of pride, bombardier and diet coke. The diet coke was by far the best. One of the ales was like vinegar and the other badly kept, so you couldn't tell which it was. The stroppy barmaid only begrudgingly exchanged the vinegar.

Good service, nice atmosphere and perfect for a drink before and after a show (at the Greenwich Theatre next door). Well worth a visit even if not going to the theatre!

NIce friendly, cosy pub. Good bar service.

Small corner location opposite what used to be the Spread Eagle coaching tavern, but is now a sedate restaurant.

The only cask, London Pride, was not on.

A clean and tidy pub with furnishings in reasonable condition. Pleasant laid back atmosphere - friendly bar man. Clear glass windows gives a feel of a French bar, and it's nice to look out on the world passing by. I have no idea of the sexuality of the other customers, but there was no camp behaviour on my lunchtime visit and no gay pride literature or pink feathers around the bar, so non-gay customers needn't feel awkward. It seemed an average, decent sort of local.

very nice and friendly gay pub! used to go with my dog after a walk at the park!!!

Im surprised nobody has reviewed the Rose and Crown since it reopened. I use the R&C as my local its our nearest gay pub. Its always busy in the evenings and at weekends with a good crowd of regulars mixing with punters from the theatre next door and visitors to Greenwich. Although its mostly a gay crowd I have no hesitation taking straight friends there, something I cant say about a lot of gay pubs. Beers include Bombardier and London Pride plus the usual lagers etc. Staff are friendly and efficient. There are occasional quiz nights and charity fundraisers.

The pub will reopen this Friday, 18th May. ANd will be much the same as it used to be, same Manager. About time too!

Below is some up to date info on the pub! Ive cut the senders email and name for their privicy, but this is from a trustworthy source...

Thank you for your enquiry about The Rose and Crown in Greenwich, one of several we've had about the pub.

The exact details of why the pub has closed are tied up in a lot of commercially confidential legal issues which I really can't go into detail about. However, Punch Taverns own a large estate of leased pubs as well as a smaller estate of managed houses. The leased pubs are run by their lessees as their own businesses, whilst the managed ones are under our direct control. The Rose and Crown is currently part of the managed estate and we're planning to re-open it shortly under our direct management while further decisions are made about its future.

I'm afraid I can't give you any exact time scales for this, and our plans may change as we consider our options, but I hope you'll have your local back very soon.

Thankfully, the comment below from 'afootytop'is in error. I have worked in the Rose and Crown and know the Manager and staff, and as yet there is no news on what is happening to the pub. No one even knows exactly why it was shut down. I have also spoken to the Manager of Powder Monkey and he confirmed that as far as he knows, Greenwich Inc is not interested in the pub. Punch Taverns are set to sell 1000 of their pubs, so the Rose and Crown may well be amongst those that go under the hammer. In any case, with a bit of luck, the pub will be open again at some stage!
Citizen01 - 26 Mar 2007 17:12
Rumours have begun to fly from the bar staff at the Rose & Crown, and from the manager of the Powder Monkey (Fred) that Greenwich Inc have just purchased the venue and are planning on closing it down. Hope the rumours turn out to be untrue as this would leave very few bars not under the messianic control of Frank.

In response to the previous comment: unfortunately there is a difference between a gay-friendly pub and a friendly gay pub...

I agree it can seem a bit cliquey but then in a way that's cos for many people it's their local - there always seems to be the same guys propping up the bar anyway! And the fact that there is a gay local in Greenwich has to be a good thing.

I've always felt it quite friendly to be honest. I would urge anyone there on their own to strike up a conversation with another person on their own and before you know it we'll all be friends!

And in response to the story about two guys being stopped from kissing at the bar - just cos it's a gay pub doesn't mean other gays want to watch two people slobbering all over each other in the middle of the day... Would be the same if it was a man and a woman - now there's equality!
Zinzan - 21 Jan 2007 17:37
This is meant to be a "gay friendly" pub?? Since I've been drinking there I've had heard nothing but snide comments from the bar staff and dirty looks from customers.

Obviously this pub is only "gay friendly" if your mates with a member of staff.

The only good thing about this pub is the recent make over which is well over due.

Gay bar stops two men kissing
From pinknews.co.uk:

14-November-2006
Marc Shoffman

A gay pub has been accused of being unprincipled and disingenuous after a customer was told to stop kissing his boyfriend because it is inappropriate.

Scott Blockley, 39, was shocked when the General Manager of the Rose and Crown pub in Greenwich told him to stop kissing his partner Marc Finbow, 24, because other customers may find it offensive.

He said: I was on a first date kissing my new friend at one end of the bar away from other people in the bar when the bar manager told us our behaviour was inappropriate at this time of the day.

I asked if the Rose and Crown was a gay pub the manager replied yes, but we are a mixed pub too, we always have been.

The pub has been in slow decline for some time now and really needs a total rethink to get some of its old charm and charcter back
greenwich_paul - 21 Jan 2006 10:19
There's always been problems with the toilets in here. The gents are underground and used to flood frequently especially after a high tide. At one point in the seventies, they were only accessible using diving gear, but we managed. These days, everyone is moaning and groaning all the time and talking about the food in the pub.I think this food business is ruining pubs generally. one of the worst things to happen after teabags and tights.
bertramr - 12 Apr 2005 13:15
recent and obvious change of management. The new guy is doing a fab job.the pub looks cleaner and more looked after and the staff seem more relaxed. Lets hope he stays. I've certainly enjoyed my last few visits!

anonymous - 8 Jan 2005 20:28
A horrendous experience. The place is filthy, toilets a disgrace and the service appalling. The management are no-where to be seen, so it's impossible to complain if you choose to. And avoid the food at all cost, it's indescribable.

A real shame because this establishment used to be a great place to visit a few years ago, but it's been ruined by poor management and shocking service.

Visisted Greenwich whilst travelling and a friend who visited this pub a few years back strongly recommended it. They said it was a gem of a pub, more like a piece of coal is what i'd call it. We had one of the worst experiences ever here. Naff decor, Naff food, naff drinks and even worse staff. my lager ( wanted to try a real ale but they had none!) was flat, i was thrown a small piece of frazzled fish, or at least i think it was fish it was very hard to tell it was so over cooked! And to top it off we were short changed and when we tried to tell the barman we were simply told to get lost as there wasnt anyone around to check the till!!! After giving up and leaving we were sent off with a "thanks...dont bother coming back!" I wouldnt recommend this pub to anyone. its a disgrace

It used to be great but has gone down hill fast since the last change of management. never any management around and as nice as a few of the staff are the service is extreamly slow and poor.the pub is dirty and the toilets stink. Another great little gay pub gone down the pan.
nicola - 16 Nov 2004 18:57
what has happened to this pub? returned after two years to very poor staff/service and decor (infact it's only half painted)a shadow of it's former self!

Don't avoid this place, especially on Tuesdays for pub quiz night. Got a great atmos and lovely people in there!
Craig - 29 Sep 2004 16:00
AVOID AT ALL COSTS - MY HUSBAND AND I WERE SUBJECTED TO CROSS QUESTIONING OVER OUR SEXUALITY AND OUR RIGHT TO BE IN THE PUB BY A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC!
JANE - 13 Jul 2004 12:35
best bustling gay pub in Greenwich, run by the lovely Mark with help from some great staff. always livened up by the regulars...
katy - 19 Mar 2004 09:27
A lovely little pub in the heart of Greenwich, right next to Greenwich park. Customer base is made up mainly of gay people and then straight in a smaller proportion.
