i tried to visit here at 8.30 on a saturday ,was initially asked for id. (im 46 with a beard) before i had a chance to show my driving licecne I was asked who I was with, when I replied no one."off duty doorman" said "wetherspoons for you".
the other doorman said "let me explain, we dont allow single people in" .
clearly they saved me the waste of money. well done for keeping up the ignorant stereo type.pathetic really.avoid here

Last time I visited this place I was served my ale in a plastic glass, no thank you, won't be going back!

Visited on Tuesday for the England game.
Yates Best was 2.10 a pint and tasted absolutely awful, vinegary taste. Left after one pint.
Whilst I normally mark down bars that don't serve real ales i'd rather go to a bar that only serves keg lagers than a bar that serves poorly looked after ale.
Shortchanged by the barstaff which they initially denied.
Door supervisors were about the only bonus on Tuesday night, very polite and doing their job all other aspects of this visit were poor.

I was hit by the bouncer, who is bald, and has eyes quite close together. I did'nt mind leaving, I just wanted to give my friend his phone, and then I was struck. I wanted to complain, but the bouncers laughed at me. I clearly wasnt gonna call the police. [email protected]

Soulless chain pub.
Birthday ale was cheap but bland!! Tasted like a pound shop beer not a well crafted one!
Food cheapish
A redeeming feature is the fact you can watch football there as the Walkie is closed.
They were doing stuff for help for heroes which is always commendable.

This is not a review as such. Just a heads up that this Yates and indeed EVERY Yates pub are selling Birthday beer ( 'tis their 125th) for 1.25.It is from Wells &Youngs. This will last for the whole of June, as there is a recession/credity crunchy/downturny thingummy bob I thought that "Biters" ( well, one or two do seem to have sharp teeth) might want a half price slurp.I thank yoooo.....( Arthur Askey).

Popped in after they recently reopened following a refurb, which seems to have involved adding a pole to the dancefloor and pinching the leftover wallpaper from the nearby 'Vinatge' bar.

It's still a predictably dull Yates's experience, but I have to admit that this is one of the better efforts from that particular chain.

This pub used to be nice in the old days, cannot say anything good except that they have enough urinals for a party of boozed up elephants.
stellafellor - 21 Oct 2008 16:56
just another bouncer infested pub full of rowdy people. it's one of those pubs that you don't want to even try and go in as the bouncers appear so intimidating and then they may not allow you in because of some immature dress code.

Why do all of the worst pubs have bouncers and dress codes. Also do all Yates have such a bad reputation?

I went here on Saturday 2nd Feb and the place was rammed. There was a brilliant atmosphere and the DJ was superb. I don't agree with any of the below comments and am definately gonna be going back. Much better than Walkabout and Milan Bar.

i used to like yates, for a couple of drinks and chill out with my mates. But last sat has completley put me off the place!! The bouncers are bloody arrogant racist idiots! They didnt let my mate in and they had no reason to not let him in which made me totally feel as though it was down to his colour. I think it is atrocious some people's attitudes are still based on people's colour.

Gone teetotal since my last visit here!!!

So perfectly awful
markcr2 - 3 Aug 2007 13:55
A first drink pub on a night out. No more than that.
h.bomb - 25 Apr 2007 07:42
There used to be a wicked DJ there on Friday's. Excellent tunes & always mixed well. Although unappreciated by the horrible chav crowd I thought he was brilliant (never did catch his name). Anyway, he is no longer there and the DJ's there are now sh*t.

Very poor all round, waited ages to be served. Ordered food which was 2-4-1, came with only one meal and barmaid wouldnt correct her mistake saying I only ordered one and would have to pay full price for another. Manager came saying the same thing, terrible service, the bar was obiviously very busy and noisy. Food not very good and full of people out for cheap drinks before moving on some place better or drinkers barred from Lloyds across the road.
garrybear - 27 Dec 2006 16:42
I have only really been here early on a Friday and Saturday night with mates as a starting point for a night out in Croydon, having changed to Yates's from The (old) Brief boozer around the corner. Thought this place was nondescript to be honest. I was happy to move on after 1 round of drinks, 2 at a push, but definitely no more. There are better bars in the area.
Searching_for_H_Files - 2 Aug 2006 16:52
Very poor establishment - Went in for a cheap beer after sign out the front advertised particular bottled beers for 1.75. Got charged a pound more than that. Manager said afterwards that the registers were not updated yet and the sign shouldn't be out there yet. Then he refused to give a refund. False advertising and bad customer service.

I like it in here. Happy staff+good service. Love the food. Heard its a bit rough in the evening tho, so tend to go after work+lunchtimes!

I used to work in this pub,it was always busy & had a fab atmosphere. At the time we lost all our custom to Tiger Tiger which was a shame, not sure of the new look though....... miss the good days!!!
Kevin - 11 Nov 2004 01:52
aight music its gud
maureen - 2 Nov 2004 22:33
I worked in this pub back in 97'. Loved the bar staff and always use to get busy on the weekends. I wonder if Ali is still the head chef there.
Jason - 17 Aug 2004 20:10
They have now changed the name to something or other! Anyway got 3 pool tables upstairs and seems alot more modern! Expensive and never seems busy!? Seems to have had a tag attached to it saying "drink after work and have a chat"... rather than a bar where people dance!
