Now a Tesco Express after a couple of years empty.

Has closed, thats one less rubbish bar in this area of town.

What has happened to this place on a Friday night recently? Once the starting point for a decent Guildford H-File search on a Friday night, it has descended in a farce. Why? Well no matter how busy it becomes here now, management refuse to let people upstairs (bar women going to the ladies), where incidentally there are pool tables, a dance floor and another bar. Even the DJ has been forced downstairs and is now camped underneath the staircase. So once you have eventually been served (note you could go across the road to Flares and be served quicker than in here at times on a Friday night now), unless you sit down, you end up standing by the entrance or in front of the toilet entrance on busy nights. Trust me they are not the best places if for instance you fancy a dance!

In the summer of 2007 this was a quality place to stay for a long while before moving onto a club. Now, however, Yates' has merely become a meeting place on a Friday night, where you take advantage of the cheaper drink prices between 6 and 9pm before quickly moving on. Maybe then Slug & Lettuce is the new Yates' regarding the Guildford H-File search on a Friday night

Nice place to have a beer

I missed the brilliant 'Peep Show' on Channel 4 (hooray for the E4 repeat) to come here Friday night (4 May). As with Lloyds I went upstairs to be served and the place was practically empty. Had to drive later, so had a pint of coke at 1.75 and discussed Guildford bouncers with friendly bar staff while being served.

More livelier atmosphere in here than Lloyds with a DJ blasting out tunes in front of the dance floor, even if there were only a few (older) women dancing on it. Pool table area is handy if you fancy a game and this part of Yates' quickly filled up. Great to see Sky Sports News on the TV screens around the place. This Yates', however, did seem a bit on the dark and dingy side. The toilets, moreover, are awful, compounded by the sad figure of a toilet attendant going on about 'freshening up for the ladies' and other rubbish. 1 for a squirt of Hugo Boss and the women will fall at my feet will they? Clueless.

Yet in spite of the above, this was the better place for me when compared to the Lloyds across the road to come searching for H-Files

Believe a lot of the bouncers are bridge street are a rather unfriendly bunch. This place has a poor history in that area, not worth a visit

Not sure what smoker2 is on about. Rarely is this place filled. It's one of the late licensing bars, yet it is empty most nights. Bouncers are rude, act like tw@s, confront you even if you're not going into the place. Oh and you're basically going back to school with Yate's. "LINE UP AGAINST THE WALL SINGLE FILE!!" is what usually is heard from the bouncers. And they'll shout this even if there's noone there, which is a regular thing. Even "flares" the cheesy 70s bar gets more ppl than this place. Don't know what a pint costs here because every time i go in, i head for the door.

Went there last sunday, Great fun, some dodgy singers here and there on the karaoke, but the music was great and varied. from funky house to R&B and to cheese!! Love it!! definatly the busiest place on the strip too. saw no chavs or 15 year olds, hopefully they don't like karaoke!
smoker2 - 21 Dec 2005 17:21
Get on the Billie Piper. Y u got play those songs so loud? Cos we want to, cos we want to. Yes DJ, all cheese pop all the time, but middling MC skills, the repetive use of the lyric 'Security to the dancefloor please' every 5 minutes becomes grating, scream down a bar staff and get bolloxed
Meaver - 13 Dec 2005 13:13
Full of pikeys, took ages to get served at bar. Couple of chavs had fight upstairs and the entire clientelle was asked to leave.

You should check out Yates in Guildford next Thursday night, 3rd November, if you like proper dance music.
These 2 guys do a night called Heaven Scent, and I went to the 1st one and the music was superb. they also gave free drinks and sweets and club tickets!
Keep up the good work lads.

Chavsville. Go upstairs if you are looking for a fight or a 15 year old.

Busy on Fri / Sat evenings, recently extended opening hours until 12:30pm. Karaoke on Sunday evenings until 11:00pm. Wouldnt recommend the food. A great bar for weekend evenings, but not much going for it the rest of the week.

Hmm... seems more and more like a bar than a pub! Good late night atmosphere though...

Don't order a draft Budweiser.

Just DON'T.

A mix of battery acid and candy floss. BLLLLEEEUURGH.

Seems a lot like the Three Tuns. Feel free to make up your mind up from that information alone.

Good place for a night out over the weekend as have DJs and dance floor area. Would advise not eat in their during the day as the food is horrible.

Not all of us value a pub for being easy to find girls ;o) As a girl I find the guys in here really letchy. Sorry boys!
OpheliaImmortal - 23 Dec 2003 14:20
the ginger who was in there did you have mates next too the dance floor, cause if you did im that, "larger than life" girl you were refering too all night.I know im fat but you didnt have any trouble pulling me and also at least in not ginger.

drinks are total rip off. Its only good for getting a view of the fights outside Edwards
anonymous - 18 Oct 2003 01:34
Not bad. Fairly cheap drinks and food, the upstairs is pleasant during the day (leather sofas looking out into Guildford) however at night the music becomes far too loud to talk. They also have karaoke (whether this is a good or a bad thing is up to you!)

i was in here on a tuesday night, 1 bar man on, we left becasue the sevice was so shocking. go to barmed, quality pub!
nick - 26 Jun 2003 11:24
Agree about the doormen, all full of it, absoloute tw**s, letting young girls that dont look 16, then not letting me and my mates in !!!! WERE 26 ....sort it out yates! and no the younger girls did not have any I.D on them, would rather spend my money in Edwards, nice bubbly doormen, wishing you a good night, and can obviously spot the woman from the youngsters.
ANON - 17 Jun 2003 11:35
Off to Yates's tonight, it's great on a Friday night with DJ Raj and what an atmosphere, nice ladies and plenty on tap!
Fletch - 6 Jun 2003 19:47
Went there a month or so ago.., loved it (as I pulled 3 lovely ladies, it helped!) Seems to be a really well planned place. Drink deals are great (on par with Weatherspoons). Haven't eaten there.. yet, so can't comment. Weekends are great there, and maybe need a bit strichter on I.D
Seemed to have a great ambience, really enjoyed it.

SARAH - 25 Jan 2003 16:26
Why is it that the isn't a single pub in Guildford that will accept an old passport as I.D. It's not valied if u want to go abroard - fair enough - but it still has your photo, name etc. on it! Have never had this problem in London or ANYWHERE else!!
K.T. - 24 Jul 2002 13:17
typical yates' rubbish. Few plasma screens, delusions of being trendy
moopet - 13 May 2002 16:32
