user reviews of the Crown, Heathfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Closed and soon to be turned into a housing estate.

It was a pretty good pub a while back, before Marston's got their hands on it.

Another pub killed off by a national chain.

See Dogtrain's below.

Things have not got any better in the intervening two years.

Been here a few time, this is my last
Service rubbish, bar staff play game machines, food on the floor, children s high chair filthy, had to order 3 times till they found something for me to eat.

Where do we start?

Good points:
A clean and tidy decor, with a nice beer garden and friendly staff.

Bad points:
Now here is where the pub/restaurant goes down here.
My wife loves eating here so we come often, however, I always play a game where I see how much of the food order they will get wrong.
I went here just earlier today (07/11/12). Four of us ate, and three of the four main courses was wrong (as always). One meal was cold so had to be sent back (this is a regular occurence), one meal said it came with mushy peas but when it arrived it was normal peas, and my meal came with side salad, but there side salad consists of nothing else but shredded lettuce. - This may seem picky, but it's EVERY time.

This is NOT a pub, in my book. Think, up market (a bit) Harvester.

When you arrive you are met by a member of staff who shows you to a seat and takes your drink order while you peruse the menu. This is a eating establishment that serves alcohol. The point is that you must eat. I don't think you can even order a drink for yourself, at the bar.

The regular '6 o'clock club' that used to meet there every evening have been tuffed out, ' We don't want your sort in here' was the message.

Having said that, the food is pretty good, 2 for the price of the higher priced meal and the beer is cask.

BTW the piped music is loud and very annoying. The staff do try to turn it down, when pressed, but I get the impression they are under orders to preserve the PR departments carefully crafted 'customer experience'.

Horse for courses I suppose but I, for one, am sad that a 'proper' pub has gone but your mum will love it.

Went in for a meal with the family after its recent refurb and name change to The Beehive. Very impressed, cosy surroundings very clean and comfortable. Nice log fire. The deal was 2 for 1 on all main meals. Great value and couldn't fault the food. Definitely recommend, worth a visit.

The Crown was recently closed by Marstons for a refurb and has now reopened as The Beehive.

There were a total of 7 people in the whole pub that had placed a food order, yet it took an hour to receive the food!
The Sunday "roasts" that arrived consisted of deep fried frozen potatoes, rubbery frozen veg, deep fried chicken breast or rubbery pre sliced and put in gravy and microwaved beef.
The ladies toilets had holes smashed into the tiles which had sharp edges sticking out. Had to make sure our kids didn't cut themselves. Also no locks on door.
Its only good quality was the barmaid. (not the blonde one!)
Would not reccommend to anyone and will not be returning.

New landlord installed a few months ago and has raised it's game. Food is good and staff friendly. Plenty of room and redecoration has commenced. Large beer garden and excellent play area for the kiddies. Has organised occassional feature evenings and is a nice place to spend some time. The loos could do with some refurbishment, but they are clean. Generally improving in difficult times. Well done!

Appalling service, bland food, do not go!

Ordered a diet coke (hey, it was lunchtime) and was given pepsi instead. Ordered Cajun chicken, chips and dip, got a chicken breast with spices sprinkled on it and no dip. The chef was behind the bar and had to be shown the menu before he believed that the dip was included. The original barmaid said it was the chef's fault and she didn't care as she was leaving in a few days.

Decoration was very dated, too many machines, hand drier in gents not working and hot tap was jammed on.

Go elsewhere I say!

Gives pubs a bad name, there aren't many pubs in Heathfield, but they'd be better off without this one.

have noticed a sudden change at the crown, largely due to the new landlord. He is same age as me but he runs the pub the way it should be Poker nights, great bands and equally excellent beer. hope he can carry it on and make it how it was.

Still dire.

When a pub "aspires" to be a copy Harvester, and can't even manage that, you know it has some issues do deal with......

Poor. Go down the road to the Prince of Wales instead!

This pub used to be a cracking all round boozer.
Now the landlords dont care about the customers, all they think about is the money.
Staff levels are poor at best with hygiene at the bottom of there to do list.
The beer is always off with lame excuses from the management blaming everything but themselves.
Bring back the temp landlord/landlady we say.

Back in the day this used to be a great pub! Now been taken over by a chain and lost all it's charm! Used to have a fantastic atmosphere, good bands and good beer! Now has OAP's eating frozen scampi and kids drinking panda pops!
