Worth a wander inside if you're passing. A decent enough pub but it's obvious the focus is now on food and seems to offer that 'gastro pub' experience. On the occasions I have been in there was a decent selection of real ale, but did seem a bit on the pricey side. If the seating area is full you can feel a bit squashed stood at the bar. Looks like a nice place to get some food but haven't eaten here myself.

As said elsewhere - ale is mediocre in here - there is a choice but it is usual suspects and rarely anything different or from the local area. I had a pint of Doom Bar and frankly it was just drinkable - not off or anything just insipid, flat and lifeless. Other than the ale the place is OK decor and seating wise and a lot of people were eating in there - would not go in here if it was my choice though...and so off we headed to 57 Thomas Street for some decent ale.

Overl priced for mediocre ale and certainly not my cup of tea.

AVOID!!

Not been here for a little while but I remember this being quite a quiet place, perfect for a catch up over a nice glass of wine in a relaxed atmosphere, without any overly-loud music, and the food wasn't bad either. Might be tempted to pay another visit sometime soon

A shame, this, as I clearly just wandered in at the wrong time (early evening on a Monday). There are six handpumps but every single one was off, as the barman told me with a shrug "well, we ran out at the weekend". Fair enough, obviously a popular place, but lots of pubs do a brisk trade over the weekend and manage to replenish their stocks fairly quickly. So my rating could have been higher - as it is, its quite a nice place to sit, with dark wood, bookshelves, attractive little booths and leather sofas. Appears to have a good reputation for its food as well; Only disappointing my craving for a decent pint went unsatisfied.

Adnams Broadside was ok, but expensive. Quite large and smart enough though. Not sure why they make such a fuss about steak & chips being on 'offer' at 15 a throw. This is a pub - not a restaurant.

Went it sat 5th dec and thought it was a bit poncy, i wonder has it been an old pub modernised. The pub was busy with saturday shoppers and the beer was ok.

Usually have 3 or 4 beers on tap. Nothing particularly exciting, Deuchars, Black Sheep etc and always kept OK if not really top notch. Very comfortable pub with with leather sofa's/seats in parts. It's close to Victoria Staion as well which is why we usually call in on our way back for the train. Wouldn't do a major detour to visit though.

Very expensive cask beer, but the quality was OK. There are plenty of much better pubs around though.

A pleasant pub/restaurant. Well kept Copper Dragon.

Good food - not the cheapest but is more aimed towards the restaurant than the bar snacks market.

I can't remember them having such trouble keeping beer when this place was the Hogshead. Someone on the staff needs some cellar training or the hand pulled beers will continue to be filth.

Got fed up waiting for the staff to actually go behind the bar, too busy talking and not paying attention, the third poor pub on a forgettable night.

Good staff bloody good food at an afordable price, I have took lots of friends here and they have all enjoyed it. If you'v not tried it its a must

Weeeeell... Overall a good pub, not too busy if you go the evening which is something I appreciate. Bar staff seemed reluctantly friendly, but still friendly none the less. Food here when read on the menu seems to be quite diverse, but the quality of the dishes when we visited was very poor. The steak sandwich seem to contain braising steak and was sopping with grease and the olives straight from a tin / jar (picked to hell!). All right place to drink if you are passing, but from what others have told me, the ales taste like the lines need cleaning, so stay away from the ales.

Real Ale, you are joking! Two on Bomadier and Deuchers IPA.
Both undrinkable, warm, flat. Got the impression nobody looks after the ale proper. Seating comfortable but more of a wine bar!
AlRobis - 29 May 2006 17:29
It's a pleasant enough place and the bar staff are friendly, but I think the beer takes second place to food here. On a recent visit I took back a Deuchars IPA, but the Black Sheep the staff (amicably) replaced it with wasn't much better.

Pity the opening policy isn't as consistent as it's staff are polite - friday 9th december - refused entry at 10:30pm because it was too busy - friday 23rd december - bar closed by 10:30pm and asked to leave because it was too quiet. When they start catering for the customers needs instead of the staff, it will be a good night out(or in, as the case may be)

As a group of us were at a loss were to eat in Manchester we were told of the English Lounge, So off we set the first visit was Good we were sat Down stairs Food was good and beer and wine well priced, When it was my wife Anns birthday we said lets go to the Lounge, We arrived to find no tables were set out Ann face dropt everybody about turned and walked out I went to the bar and said do you not do food now , yes the girl said it is upstairs now , I got everybody back in and upstairs. The rest is history We visit on a regular basis, the staff are brill they make your night and the food just gets better, weather there is two of you or a few of you the servis is still the same, Thanks for all the good times to all the staff. From Brian, Ann ,and the gang

Nice to find a city centre pub that does good 'real' food at decent prices.
Excellent Sunday lunch.
uncle_colin - 28 Apr 2005 13:44
not let me down so far and the staff appear to enjoy their work which makes a change. Food very good and excellent value and most cask ales are between acceptable to very good condition. So far unspoilt by surrounding developments and not too trendy. Rare find.

I miss the Hog's Head though I'm glad when it changed to the English Lounge they didn't knock it about too much. Boddies Cask and Pedigree on handpull are good four times out of five and I agree with Dan, the food is good. There used to be a policy of greeting and seating customers though that has been relaxed. Daily papers, cheerful barstaff and no riff-raff.

I absolutely love it. Since I discovered it 6 months ago, it's become my favourite pub. Excellent selection of beers, wines and spirits and the food is outstanding.
