Community pub in a nice village. The café was busiest on my Wednesday morning visit. I was the only customer in the pub itself, which is much larger than it initially appears. 5 real ales were on - Marston's Pedigree, Thwaite's Wainwright, Stancill Stainless, Peak Ales Black Stag & Kelham Island Easy Rider. My Black Stag was very nice. Although the barmaid was struggling, as it was a bit lively. Somebody from the Peak Ales Brewery happened to visit whilst I was there. Apparently the Black Stag is a popular beer. Nice place.

Good Beer Guide 2019 - but I expect its more to do with the community efforts in keeping it going (attache is a cafe, shop and a post office) rather the quality of the beer.

The Chatsword Gold was in average condition.

The pub was nice and busy, with bar and separate dining area. Could do with some comfier seats - but I had been walking 16 miles.

Community run local serving decent ales. As mentioned they have put a lot of effort into retaining this pub for the local community and visitors alike (It could have ended up like the Derwent down the road). Four ales on those sampled were on good form. It is a bit of a hike (give yourself 15 minutes) up from or down to the station.

It's been a while since I last dropped in here and I can only say that it's continued to improve. There is a heroic band of volunteers who look after the general maintenance of the pub and the resident landlady Amanda keeps the beers on top form.
There are some regular beers and a couple of well kept guest ales along with simple but very tasty food. It's a real community asset and the efforts of all concerned deserve a round of applause. There have been many online detractors who only seem to complain, but notably none of them seem interested in making any effort to improve the place, so in my view it's all power to the community who do make the effort and long may it continue. Top marks for trying!

"apparently there has been some local opposition to the community buyout - why?"

***

Some people think that sort of thing leads to..........communism.....why, they might open a co-op next...

Well what a change of fortune. I thought this old pub was going the way of the Dodo until thankfully a group of enterprising locals rescued it from (I think) the dead hand of Admiral Taverns who must be one of the most destructive pubco's in the country. A group of us visited last Sunday after a walk for a terrific value carvery followed by an extended session and somehow staggered back down the hill to the station and home. The beers were well kept with Black Sheep as a regular and three other rotating guest ales. Talking to the folks at our table, apparently there has been some local opposition to the community buyout - why? Things have improved immeasurably and I for one give everyone involved a round of applause. This once gloomy dive is now a real asset to Hope Valley's once dwindling collection of real ale pubs.

Now a free house (owned by members of the local community) the beer has improved in variety and quality and value. Beer aristocrat Kelham Island Pale Rider was on for 2.90 last week and was on top form too. Black Sheep and Doom Bar seem to be regular beers, and there are one or two guests. Piped music was a bit gloomy (David Gray I think) but that's carping. A great stop-off for a pint.

Popped in whilst passing and heard that the villagers of Bamford had acquired the pub and hope to run it as a FREE HOUSE for the benefit of the community. This is a real turn up in the pub's fortunes as it had been running down for a while and I can't remember the last time I had a meal here, as food has not been available for what seems like years.
Surely things can only get better now that the pubco that ran it is longer bleeding the life out of the place.

Stayed in Bamford at the end of Sept in a cottage a few yards up the road from this pub. We were in Bamford for 4 nights and visited the pub each night and the Sunday afternoon. They had one ale on offer that was kept well, although this was unavailable on the Sunday as they had sold out due to a busy Sat night so Guinness it was! Nice friendly local, Landlord very accommodating and made us feel welcome, even said we could bring our Sunday roast over to eat in the pub if we wanted as none of us wanted to leave. PS. Note to landlord, sorry we didnt make Sunday night, we had all fallen asleep!!

We spent two evenings here, great traditional pub with welcoming landlord and team.
Food was excellent, not a huge selection but all 4 dishes we tried were well prepared and the chef cooked steaks as we asked for, something many chefs seem unable to do. Good selection of beers and malts.
Billiard table and dart board also available, music playing in background was varied and not too loud.
Well worth a visit.

Very welcoming pub with some interesting beers on when we popped in recently. The food is very good value and the staff really seem to care whether or not you enjoyed it. One of the few remaining PUBS around these parts now.

Discovered this pub whilst spending time with friends in the Peak District over the Bank Holiday ... turned out to be a wonderful gourmet, as well as walking, weekend. Hosts, John and Suanne, were most welcoming and enthusiastic about their food. The standard for the cost was absolutely amazing and we will certainly be returning, as much for the food as the walking! A rare find indeed ... an unspoilt pub, no pretensions but high on standards (even shared some "chef's secrets" with us).

While staying at a B&B in Bamford for 5 nights my wife and I visited The Anglers Rest every evening for food and beer. Great food, good beer and friendly and helpful atmosphere. Lovely to visit after a long day in the Peaks.

Visited yesterday for lunch. An impressive village pub very well set out inside, outside area a bit basic. Four guest beers, the Theakstons Black Bull was excellent. As well as catering for the passing trade it is still the local for the village.

Although the menu is not as extensive as some pubs the food was very good and fresh. The landlord and landlady are very welcoming and keen to develop the pub.

Very well worth a visit a well run pub in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside.

Went to The Anglers last week.
A warm welcome and a good selection of beers preceded a great value "Steak Night Special" of 2 steaks with all the trimmings and a bottle of wine - all for just 22!
The home made Bread & Butter pudding was fantastic.

Well worth a visit for a great value meal cooked to a very high standard.

Great to see this place back on its feet. It's a great local, and passing trade can only increase with the positive word of mouth exemplified by the last two reviews. Food is good and very flexible - you can have a three course meal or just a burger and chips. Old-fashioned hospitality is the order of the day. And the quiz night on wednesday is a really good laugh.

What a good do! My wife & I visited for lunch on the 29th April. We were warmly welcomed & made to feel at home. The beer was in fine fettle & we both ordered the shepherds pie. Everything was perfect. The portions were generous, the food was excellent and the prices reasonable. Not normally a dessert fan on this occasion we both chose a dessert. We were not disappointed. This is one of those places that you keep in your diary for future. We will definitely be back. The current owners have only been there approximately one month and so I wish them all the best!

While traveling through derbyshire, we came across a village called bamford, late at night, and drove past the anglers rest, which is under new ownership, a slouth african couple, who seem to be very profesional, and freindy.
surprised to find people still drinking at 11pm.
Even more surprising was that the landlord was willing to open the kitchen and make us something to eat.
We chose the steak, the protions were big and the steak was cooked perfectly.
and the landlady was very freindly and welcoming.
we went back the next day, a bit earlier in the evening, and the atmosphere was lovely.
I ordered the steak again, to see if the food was consistant, and again, it was cooked just as i asked.
the chocolate fudge cake was reccomended by the landlady, and it was superb, served warm with ce cream, the presentation of the food was beautiful.
all in all, id definately reccomend this pub.
its very friendly, welcoming and the new owners are very accomodating.

This pub has changed hands many times since last review. The current landlord has improved the beer selection and quality but is capricious with opening hours. Has been known to close early because only one or two customers in.

This pub has recently changed hands and the new landlord and landlady are very friendly and welcoming.

The pub serves a good range of excellent food and the meals we have had there have been very good value for money.

Beautiful location - I'd recommend this pub to anyone. Pets and children also welcome.

The portions we had were huge and reasonably priced for the size of them!! I liked this pub a lot.
Clare - 13 Oct 2003 14:07
The food portions here are tiny and overpriced. I would not recommend it to poor people.
