pool table has gone now for some reason?!

Visited a couple of times in last few weeks and I have to say that the combination of a nice beer garden, decent ale and very tasty (and fresh) food has been welcomed. Ales seem to be Landlord, Tribute, Doom Bar and one other, with the first one drinking particularly well. And they got a pool table.

Clientele depends on when you're there, so quiet-ish in the weekday afternoon, post-work early evening and then a mix of people later on. Service usually pretty good and although the bar food can be pricey at top end, we found most of it good value but alos lots of clearly fresh ingredients, which was very good.

Certainly worth a look, will maybe visit on a weekend evening to see if they still employ demented security staff, which put me off here one evening a few years back.

Pleasant high street pub with a great pub garden, good selection of beer and enough space that even when it's packed (eg when football's on) you can still find a corner.

I have been in many pubs in my time, but none as good as this, i went up to the bar expecting the same old service you'd expect in a busy pub, but was very suprised! firstly i was told that i would be seved soon, and then was greeted by a very friendly smile.
I was gob smacked to see a food menu so yummy. and the food was not a let down.
wow what a massive garden, why didn't i know about this three months ago!!
thanks for a great evening, see you soon.

Excellent pub - large inside, great garden. Usually a good selection of ale (nice Summer Lightning when I was there, plus Doombar and Tribute). All present and correct, really. Have been there (when I used to live in the area) on a Fri night and it is PACKED. Other times - like a Sat afternoon - very mellow. Had a couple of pints and then across the road to Cafe Mostra for a great meze lunch

A huge, dark pub which is trying to cater to many differing crowds at once - and to be fair does a pretty good job of it. Decent ales (Spitfire, Deuchars, Triumph) alongside plenty of lagers and ciders and one of the only places around where they know when they are going to be busy and so increase the number of bar-staff appropriately. Quality beer garden, a random music policy which keeps you on your toes, a good mix of folk and on Sundays plenty obvious casualties still forcing it down from the night before. Often frequented by that funny Mick Jagger-wannabe old dude who wears crop tops and was once spotted on roller-blades. Can get very hot and very busy though - and I feel sorry for the owners as loads of local skanks pile in for the big football games and don't even buy a drink. Definitely recommended though.

I like this pub! Good mix of people and large enough to not get too crowded, always good for the watching the Arsenal as the atmosphere is top (Strangely, always seems to be at least 5 very vocal/phycho thickneck Chelski fans in there when there is a big game on...) Beer garden is great in the summer, Spitfire is nearly always good. The only word of warning is don't go there on a winters friday night unless you want to lose half your body weight in sweat as there seems to be no air con or opening windows! Gents Karzi under the big screen is terrible, but does have blackboard above the urinal for writing rude things about Spurs on when drunk!

Love, love, love this pub. Great staff - when I lived in Stokey, I became good mates with some of the staff. Its perfect for any time really though Friday nights and Sunday afternoons were best. Even though the music does get a bit loud on the weekeng, its generally good and the quizzer sometimes malfunctions so you sometimes win 1 without doing anything! When the football is on, there's a great atmosphere - though I'm not a fan myself and beer garden is fab. Have only eaten here a couple of times and have been impressed. Love the chalkboard in the gents which provides much humourous banter between weak-bladdered friends.

wow, the previous person must've went to the wrong pub, doesn't sound like any of the bar managers that i've met. maybe it's because i say please and thankyou though.

A big pub with incredibly rude staff - asked for a pint of lager got given a cider and, when questioned about this, the bar manager told me that he was 'too tired and too hungover' to argue and with that he walked off.

Could be a great pub but is let down.
simplythehesse - 29 Mar 2008 12:31
nice place, nice welcome, nice food, nice

great pub. spacious, good bar staff, nice big sofas, pool table. and a big garden out the back. one of the best places to go for a drink in stokey.
loola - 27 Aug 2007 17:14
Not a bad pub but I agree with the previous comment about an odd DJ policy; sometimes a chilled boozer, then the music gets a lot louder and it's time to leave.

Great for children! Only pub in Stokie where the little ones can come in and watch the Arsenal.

This pub is how a pub should be. Despite what the guy below says, I have always found the staff friendly and polite and have had numerous enjoyable nights out here. Highly reccomended.

I drink all over Hackney in some truely world-class public houses. This is only place I have been rudely ejected from at 11:20pm on a Tuesday night having been in there for about an hour. Talk about split personality staff. No need to go back when you have the Shakespeare down the road or even the Birdcage.
danrkelly - 7 Apr 2006 00:01
Very good for football, especially the Arsenal games. The DJ can be a bit random - once they were playing loud techno at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon as people were eating their lunch. Interesting choice.
The garden is good though, as the only place round here with one this good is over at the Londesbrough. It's very dark, so cosy for winter, but remains dark in summer, so head out the back to the garden.

Recently been enjoying the fantastic BBQ they hold every weekend in the enormous beer garden. Food great!

wicked!!!
samsupernova - 2 May 2005 18:34
i had the most brilliant night there last night... one of the best djs [though not advertised and not billed anywhere outside] it kind of sums up the place very understated - but secretly brilliant - it turns out that it was nelson dilation [who djs around the world and was one of the main white DJs who played the legendary anoka club at the blue note hoxton square and who i caught at glastonbury last year [and he said he was playing three times this glasto - so i'll be there - but with no hassles and the best music - the white hart is an amazing little arty pub tucked away on the main stoke newington high street mile and it is very different from what is outside. kind of near the eye [now closed] and near my parent's house - its one of the best pub's anywhere ... my parents enjoyed the sunday lunch and i stayed on til the end for the music - i can't really say how many people were dancing on the tables at the end - it was one of those nights - legendary and very very cool that i could experience this is my backyard [literally] and have such a good time... anyway this is to recommend the white hart to those who haven't beenthere in awhile and to those who already know it is - the djs, barstaff, etc. thanks for one of the best bank holiday sundays in memory!!!
samsupernova - 2 May 2005 18:33
There's no better place to go on weekend in stokie, footy on big screen with pint of your best beer. sunday roast is just deliciuos and you can eat it in huge beer garden! 9/10
cheeky.dude - 13 Apr 2005 11:12
i am really surprised at the comment about not recommending this pub to others and [if you had been going there for three years doesn't that say somthing too?] having been a local there for some time i feel i should defend one of the best pubs and beer gardens in n16 and also perhaps all of london... a sunday here is really close to heaven when the sun is shining - brilliant djs on the weekends help too - and the food [which we've had downstairs is ok too...]and also - the prices are so reasonable - 400 seems remarkable... anyway for me and my girlfriends this is a cool place to go - no hassles from anyone and a very safe bet for a lovely night out [and when the sun is shining - step out the back door... its really wicked...

One of the best pub in Stokey and one of the only place where you can order food on a Friday Night. Massive beer garden + great service and lots of extras: table football, pool,DJ's and big tv screen. You just have to go!

Kakio - 8 Apr 2005 13:43
We've been going to the White Hart fairly regularly for the last 3 years and wanted to try the restaurant upstairs. The staff were rude to the point of aggressive throughout the meal, we had several problems with the food and there was no manager - when one was seriously needed. The whole operation was very unprofessional and in short we paid 400 only to be sworn at by 3 members of staff. We will not be returning or recommending this place to others.

Best and biggest beer garden in Stokey. Bit dodgy crowd sometimes and one of the most annoying (and loud) DJs ever. Superb in summer, best avoided in Winter I'd say.
Tomster - 8 Dec 2004 20:28
I only ever visit this pub to watch the football but i can honestly say that it is a great place to go with a great bunch of people there.
Being able to watch a mid-week european fixture drink beer and still be able to order bar food after work is one luxury i cant be without!
Pat72 - 22 Nov 2004 15:52
Great pub that manages to be traditional boozer as well as somewhere to linger over a bottle of wine or even a few cocktails. Try the restaurant upstairs - class without the need for a platinum visa.
Seamus - 13 Nov 2004 12:35
Massive beer garden. Gorgeous roasts - 6.50 chicken, lamb, beef and amazing veg nut roast. Honestly go and you will love it.
sarah tunstall - 6 Sep 2004 17:25
fast becoming the regular haunt for stokey nights out, nice atmosphere, especially the sunday afternoon/evenings when you get to spot who's been partying all weekend!!
Simon - 24 Jun 2004 11:55
Nice local, food is decent; if a little fancy. Pool table is poor and colonised by the locals so best avoided. Nice barstaff and a wicked night during the week where a decidedly dodgy looking dj plays swing and funk!
Matthew Walsh - 21 Jan 2004 16:44
Lots of space, pool, table football and music. Nice place, but no real beers.
Pauly - 21 Sep 2003 12:26
Recently refurbished, for the beter for once, this pub has a nice atmosphere inside with its pleasantly gloomy open plan layout, lots of old wood, very simple design.
For me, the outside bits are the main attraction though. A lovely old stone terrace, surrounded by ivy covered walls with a side gate out into a huge beer garden. Well, beer lawn anyway, not exactly Kew Gardens out there but big, quiet and leafy.
They've just stared serving food too. Looks OK, but I've not tried any.
There's a pool table, comfy leather sofas, djs at the weekend and (unfortunately) big screen football some nights, but they do usually turn it off as soon as the whistle blows.
