user reviews of the Greyhound, Derby

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Expensive and pretentious. I object to paying well over the odds for pretty indifferent beer only to be given short measure. The service was very poor from staff who seemed bored and uninterested. The drinking environment is quite noisy as the pub is not carpeted. How this pub got into the Good Beer Guide is beyond my comprehension.

A historic exterior modernised internally by Derby Brewery. The things I remember about this place (stop 8 on my tour) are the crescent shaped bar (somewhat of a Derby Brewery trademark), and a set of handpumps which seemed to bear little relation to the beers listed as “available”. I tried the Dashingly Dark (about the only thing on both lists), a beer I’d had before elsewhere, which, although nice, wasn’t anything like as good as I remembered it. Building still has a few books and crannies, most of which you have to negotiate to get to the toilets ! The is a quiet courtyard at the rear which is good for drinking on sunny days.

5/10 – a bit upmarket for me.

The plain exterior and Doorman on duty outside almost persuaded us to skip trying the Greyhound, but we went in anyway and were very glad we did!

Internally completely modernised, comfy sofas and tables in the front room, to the rear a room with many more tables. On a Friday night it was pretty much heaving, a good natured mix of all ages. The central bar had several real ales and a few more ‘craft beers’, the gas-dispensed modern alternative to real ales but often highly creative &unusual which more than compensates. Barman very friendly & helpful, even topped my pint up for free when I spilt a bit! Food served from nearby kitchens. Felt like a bustling friendly place where all were having fun. A very pleasant surprise.

DBC are extremely good at what they do - brew very good beer, offer very good food, but as with the Brewery Tap, they have retained the old exterior of the pub and made it very modern inside, something which jars with my traditional views, but I am very glad these two pubs are thriving and the decor won't stop me going, especially for the sampler boards they offer, excellent for five third-pints and a bowl of cheese. Can't be bettered.

The better of Derby Brewing Company's two city pubs with a nice traditional bar opening up into a light, spacy area for people to sit and dine. As mentioned previously the beer is well kept but not always to my taste. However, the Double Mash was a nice pint and the food was excellent, try the club sandwich!

First visit to this pub - a bracing walk from the city centre!! As with their other pub they have gutted the interior and turned it into a modern bar with food. Very clean and tidy with efficent and prompt service and a range of Derby Brewery beers as well as a couple of guest ales. I had the blond beer (Hop till you Drop) which was excellent. The food looked good but I had already eaten so the beer was enough. Nice and warm inside and all-in-all a very pleasant pub. Buses 28/29 stop across the road if you can't face the walk back into to town.

Modernised bar with a welcoming coal effect gas fire to sit infornt of on a freezing evening. The Derby ales on were good - had a pint of 'Business as Usual' and could of had a few more of those but had ot push on as it was getting late.

Very nice place owned by Derby Brewing Company. Has quite a bit more character than its sister pub, the Royal Standard. Always seems to have the full range of ales on (light, brown, dark etc) throughout the year. I've visited many times and never had a pint that was less than excellent. Staff are good most of the time but service does get a little slack on occasions.

An excellent pub. One of the Derby Brewing Co.'s outlets, it's a clean pub that's had a fairly recent refurb with polished boards and good selection of beers. The Derby Silent Night Porter was on excellent form. The food was also good.

Nice enough choice of ales and pleasant enough pub. When we visited the staff seemed more interested in social networking than serving. Maybe it was because it was a slow afternoon. Worth a visit though.
