Yet another pub that's bitten the dust. It closed several years ago and is now a lovely looking house, with plenty of parking.

I think this pub must have changed hands recently? Very disappointed. I went for someone's birthday and it pretty much ruined the evening. I chose the crabs claws at over 6 for a starter and received three synthetic pieces of deep fried gunk which was neither vegetable nor animal. It was like glue with the end of a crab claw stuck into it. Even Kerry Katona would have turned her nose up at it. I am not a fussy eater but like to eat proper food rather than plastic. When we complained the manageress was very rude and dismissive. She even said that it was one of the most popular dishes on the menu!! I would avoid this place which is a shame because its a quaint building and apart from the manageress the other staff are friendly.

How can they do so much choice in food! All cooked well, lovely quaint restaurant, in a quiet country lane location. I love Badgers beer, so this place is heaven.

Nice looking pub, but yet another a souless Hall & Woodhouse establishment. Sadly no beers from local micro breweries. There's a much better pub just down the road!

I went in there on Sunday evening with a friend on the recommendation of a local. It is probably the friendliest and most hospitable pub I've ever been to in the UK. The menu is mouthwatering and although we only had a light meal, I saw the quality of some of the other meals.
This is a real 'olde English' pub, unspoilt and well run, and was a delightful find.
I look forward to going back for a full meal during the week.

I fail to believe some of the above comments. I am a regular user of the Gate, Maybe once a week, and I occasionally eat there. The last time I eat there was about Three months ago. On that occasion fourteen of us turned up with about thirty minutes notice and twelve of us were really impressed with the quality and quantity of the food (the other two were children). We were also impressed with the quality of the service. Several of the people with us travel extensively and have eaten all over the world, impressing these people is a real score. The location of the pub is good, it is a traditional English country pub, with a restaurant that is very busy on popular nights.

Before finishing this review I have asked the landlord of the pub for his comments. He does agree that there was a problem with people being served drinks at the tables. This was due to the staff not wanting to keep bothering people while they are eating, he hopes they have now found a balance that suits. The most scathing review above, where the people were seated an hour late he remembers, they did not put in the review that two of them got lost on the way and were forty five minutes late, that's most of the hour sorted. If anyone is coming to the Rusper area, this pub is probably the best for dining, there is also a good bar to get a drink in before you eat.

There is however, no pool table, and there has not been for about four years.

Extremely quiet pub everytime we have been and yet it takes an age to get served. The beer is okay and the food is expensive for such poor quality. Really strange atmosphere so not going back too soon

Food (fish) was excellent, but try to get a drink and it starts to get tricky. Staff friendly but stretched to the limit.

Family pub, very clean, quiet atmosphere, rural location. Selection of 3 Ales, all of which were served too cold. We had to wait for 1 hour to be seated having already booked a table for 7:30pm. Starters arrived quickly, however the Tomato and Basil soup was a Heinz tinned soup with added Basil. The Main courses were dreadful. 1)Fish and Chips - really oily fish. 2) Garlic Chicken - chicken was processed and overcooked. 3) Sausage and Mash - Sausage was revolting. On complaining to the landlady, she said she "didn't have time for this" and walked away. Her husband then came and took the meals away. The landlady then came over to the table and said "no-one has ever complained about the fish before" and walked away again. When the bill arrived the meals had been deducted from the bill, however the landlady then came over to us, placed a hand on the shoulder of my girlfriend and told her "the likes of you come in here looking for a free meal and that is exactly what you got" when we very politely told here that she can't speak to us like that, she shouted at us "you're barred" and asked her husband to show us out!! I have never been thrown out of a pub or restaurant in my life and can not believe we got barred for complaining about the quality of the food. Needless to say we will not be going back!

Lovely-looking pub with atmosphere but the busy Saturday evening we went it was hopelessly understaffed. Just one bar person and one working in the restaurant. Obviously staff sickness can't be foreseen, but a pub like this really should have a standby list of p/t staff it can call on. Although we had a table booked it was 20 mins before we could even order a drink, and getting further drinks during the meal was almost impossible. Food was good, beer eg Fursty Ferret pretty mediocre. Not an entirely successful dining experience!

Great place for that special night out..

It's nowhere near Ifield but is about halfway to Rusper, in the middle of fields and woods. Surprised it hasn't been sold off as a private house. Hall & Woodhouse beers.
