This is a nice pub, decent drop of beer and friendly locals. its a big place and has a lot of screens to watch the sport if that's your fancy. A few regulars in here, some will just come up and chat to you out of the blue, nice enough. There is one individual who is just worth avoiding. For some reason he now sits here all day and not the pub up the road. We know him as Walter Mitty. Every pub has one, don't let this put you off, its easy to avoid him in such a big place. The staff are really friendly, but a little blind to underage drinkers. good food, beer garden out front which is just been re done. All in all a good place to visit.

I'm not sure I've ever been to this area of London before, apart from possibly speeding by on the North Circular. The George is an imposing looking pub, next to an Odeon cinema. It was very busy early on Saturday evening, with crowds of people enjoying the late sunshine. Indoors were mainly people watching the late Premier League kick-off on the TVs. The ale selection was not the best - Old Golden Hen, Old Speckled Hen, London Pride, Doom Bar & Abbot. I opted for a soft drink after having sat in the sun at Upton Park for a few hours and feeling parched. Seems like a nice enough pub. Pity the ales weren't more adventurous.

Ah, The George. What used to be, and could again, be one of the best pubs in the area. Cheap enough beer, but ruined by the weekend door mugs and the underage drinkers, all buying one drink each on cards. Lose the jukebox, offers on tart fuel and it might just get back to it's former glory.

Good value beer but full of obviously underage drinkers and I am surprised the Police have not been in as this is a nice area and location. take the kids out and it would be a great pub. better than the others going east
Danny1955 - 6 Sep 2011 13:51
Would be great pub if average age of clientele got above 13 at weekends

Great pub, good value for money and cheap grub, not much selection of ale but usually ok for taste and condition. Only downside is the slow service and swarms of alcopop kids who swamp the place.

I live in South Woodford. I never went into this pub for many years due to the quality of the beer. for some reason even the london pride when they had it didnt taste right.
Thought I would try it again last sunday. What a Difference! The IPA was first class and at 2.45 a pint excellent value. The 3.6 strength was also perfect for several lunchtime drinks.
The barstaff were also very attentive, because a previous gripe about The George was it took an age getting served.
Massive improvement,Well Done...

Love that steak. Juicy and Tender. I mustve had 2 on one crazy bender. and as for the management. little britain? no! perhaps Gervais on the office or that other show?

As a regular of this pub i find it very cosy with a great atmosphere and very friendly staff who are always up for a joke when you get to know them. At 1.50ish on a monday night the beer price is incredible for a pub on the borders of central london and i find the variety of foods available on the menu very appealing. The beer standard is always near perfect with plenty of choice and i can always be found in this little gem of a pub in SouthWoodford

I have just returned from the George after having attempted to eat the worst food I have encountered in a pub....I couldn't even cut through the carrots with a knife, the steak was full of gristle and the cauliflower and brockly were like rubber!

Worse still the staff were rude, my friend asked for sauces (very politely) and before she could even finnish her sentence the waitress barked 'yeah I'm getting it, I've only got two of these!' (waving her hands as she walks off).

We complained to the manager, who did offer an apology and refund. However, he was more rude than the waitress and his apology was aggressive and unconvincing, and more like being told off. This was particularly unpleasant as it came from someone who appeared to have the customer service and communication skills of a Little Britain character.

If your hungry, don't bother with this place, I actually feel a bit sick now!

The faults brought by an incredibly awkward design is merely heightened by the barstaff simply refusing to work at any other pace than 'slow'. People gather in the narrow part of the pub, leaving either end strangely empty. The beer is cheap, but not brilliant, but as a result of the poor design you may end up spilling most it on some poor soul's lap and thus getting your head kicked in. Yet for some reason the locals love it, and as a result the atmosphere, if you're willing to delve into the furthest reaches of your mind for some form of idiocy, can be great.

ignore le_bunt , he needs to stick to his probable age group and drink with the OAP's at the cricketers......a funeral package with every pint there.

Good for meeting women :-)
Weretooyoungtodie - 30 Jun 2009 23:21
absolute skankhole. cant get served unless you wait more than 10 minutes, and the bar staff seem to just ignore you even if youre standing there looking like youre waiting for a drink. the bar was an absolute mess and the tables hadnt been cleaned in god knows how long. and there was broken glass all over the floor. seems like quality of service has been disregarded for milking pubescent teens of as much of their money as possible.

guaranteed to serve you a drink if youre falling down drunk, though. which must be good for all the alcoholics in the area. responsible retailing, it is not.
plus a couple of people on the table nearby us were seemingly itching for a fight and at each others throats. no wonder they have bouncers in there these days.

disappointing really because i used to enjoy coming here every week with my friends from work. i doubt i'll be in here again any time soon though.

Seems to have been recently refurbished but in the main unchanged since I used to visit it in the 80's.

Good quality Bass at 2.24 a pint was a welcome discovery.

Its a nice pub but is almost always under staffed and they aren't very friendly either.
elena4 - 27 Mar 2008 21:35
ok boozer (for the area) but one of the worst designed pubs I've been to; everyone congregates by the bar making it impossible to pass or get served. there's seating out the front too, if you don't mind carbon monoxide poisoning.

hilariously, they've sold the car park off to developers who are building flats on the site, with a lovely view out of your back window onto the side of the cinema/alleyway. it beggars belief...
DavidWaspnest - 13 Jul 2007 16:39
Well cheap, nice bar staff, but not enough of them but nice to pay an honest price for a beer.
nicey74 - 22 Jun 2007 16:04
doesn't allow children, even in the beer garden.when we asked why, we were told this is to discourage under-age drinkers, which doesn't make sense in the first place, never mind considering the difference
between my 9 month old daughter and a hooded teenage tearaway.
hence an empty beer garden on a lovely sunny sunday afternoon.
still, at least they display a notice of their policy/prejudice,unlike the vile O'Neills in Leytonstone.georgekaplan.

I'm a Guinness fan, and the George pulls a good one. They've got regular and Extra Cold. But the smoke is almost intolerable on a Fri/Sat night. Outdoor in the summer is ok but it gets full in there.

Very nice place as a start to a good night out. Real ale is always on and is of a good quality. Can get very busy but is still very relaxed and the staff are quite good. Don't really understand the last couple of comments, clearly from people who expect to be waited hand on foot whilst enjoying the cheapest pint in the area. In fact i'm rather glad they don't like the place as hopefully they won't drink in there so the other 95% of us can relax without such blatent snobbery. Top-noch, highly recommend!
astonmartinmo1 - 2 Nov 2006 15:00
Not a bad pub, good no smoking area. Not had food here yet!
bottomsup100 - 23 May 2006 14:00
This place is dire.Ok for as swift one before the cinema but otherwise avoid.Despite a refurb it's haldf modern and half traditional.Staff are miserable as sin.Last time I was in there it appeared to be full of neds/chavs.Has a beer garden which is right beside the main road...hardly quaint! No children allowed anywhere...not even in the beer garden.
Shame really as from the outside it looks like it's got potential....could do with a bloody good clean as well
anonymous - 6 Jan 2006 16:16
Massive improvement recently. Prices reasonable, bar staff efficient, locals good (very mixed age range), bit too smokey.
patrickjsm - 29 Dec 2005 18:51
A classic 70-style carpets type pub, but crying out for a jukebox.
drbee - 23 Dec 2005 11:43
Since this pub has been taken over it's a much nicer place to be. The food is also good now and it's always busy. I always preferred the hogs head but i now regular the george cause its cheap, nice friendly, top noch!
anonymous - 26 Oct 2005 03:32
Great little pub (as in the decor, location and atmosphere) but has: miserable staff, far too much 2nd hand smoke except for the little corner when you walk in and bad food!!! Other than that a treat!!!
anonymous - 5 Aug 2005 15:15
Not a very good atmosphere adn the staff were very miserable and unhelpful, wouldn`t recommed this pub
janet - 13 May 2004 11:06
The George used to be a dump not a very nice pub. It has changed alot, it is a really nice pub now.
Martin Smith - 4 May 2004 17:22
Used to be a grotty hole which went downhill pre rennovation, now a comfortable, bright pub with friendly staff and a good selection of pub grub. It's location is perfect - next to the cinema and opposite a chicken shop & curry house. You still get the odd weirdo in there but most of them have disappeared into the ether. Definately worth a visit although they took away the pool table and the TV's post rennovation.
jason - 11 Mar 2004 00:04
Who is this guy? 'I'll keep you updated,' what a loser.

Anyway the George's recent rennovation has greatly improved the standard in the pub, the drinks are nice, the staff efficient, if a little shy. The new decor in there is superb, I'd almost like it in my own house, very traditional and comfortable. A good pub alround.
Jaris - 7 Dec 2003 09:43
This pub is open again and I'm pleasantly suprised. The interior is warm, comfortable and relaxing. The staff are uniformed now and are noticably more efficient. They don't sell cider anymore which is dissappointing. Music's a bit loud for this typeof pub. Otherwise,it's all good.
Chris - 9 Oct 2003 05:03
This pub is closed for renovation for a couple of weeks so keep clear and i'll post a description of the new interior when it next opens.
Chris - 27 Aug 2003 19:05
This is pub is if anything, a handy watering hole. It may not jump out as the best pub in the area but it's in the middle of South Woodford, next to the cinema and oppositte some good resteraunts. Usual beers and ales, friendly staff, pool table, juke box, car park.
