Undoubtedly one of the best pubs on the island. It offers an extensive menu, fresh produce, amazing quality of food and a truly friendly and welcoming atmosphere. There's a good choice of ale and the wine is superb too. I come to the island every year and always visit the High Down Inn at least twice for dinner during my visit!

Beware reviewers that have only ever made one review - see below. Bound to be two sides to this argument...

The owners of this pub were more than kind to us in our visit - see even further below.

I love this pub and hope to be back this year when we visit the island.

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE... we went inn after seeing a sign for food served all day. four adults one 2 year old, we sat out site whilst the two men went in checked that food was being served, they were handed the menus and they ordered drinks for all of us. When we went back in 5 mins later to order the food, having all chosen from the menu, they decided they were not serving food. They did not apologise, they Owner was very rude, explaining they had had a cook just walk out, however she was wearing a chefs outfit so why she couldn't knock something together we have no idea. Then when we used the loo it was dirty and had no loo roll and the slide my daughter was playing on was broken and cracked with sharpe bits, terrible service, a complete rip off. Hope it closes down.

This pub ticks all the boxes. On the Island for a day trip we passed it several times throughout the day and each time became more convinced that it would serve us well for dinner - it just looked like a 'solid' sort of place. And it didn't disappoint! On pump were a Ringwood ale, and Wadworth 6X and Henry's with the Henry's keg up on the bar (also had Mild on tap, plus several lagers and my wife very much enjoyed the house white), impressive menu of imaginative locally-sourced dishes (with a good line in seafood) at sensible prices and a warm genuine pub atmosphere without trying too hard (I agree with robdscarter's post below). The staff were all friendly and courteous and when the food arrived the portions were large. Sadly we'd started with garlic bread which did not leave enough room to finish our mains, which was a shame, as they were really good. The chips were perfect! Best pub I've been in for a while and my first 10/10 rating.

Simply an excellent pub...

Our visit began difficultly though as our car got stuck in the mud in their overflow car park. Fortunately the landlady was extremely helpful and another lady behind the bar kindly towed us out in her 4x4 (won't have a word said against them now!).

Excellent real ale and brilliant fish and chips in a proper pub environment - no fake Victoriana or sewing machines nailed to the ceiling etc. beloved of pub "improvement" schemes.

All in all one of only a few 10 out of 10 pubs.

Went July 2009. Moved on to this pub after briefly visiting another fairly local establishment with a no-under-10s policy... Staff and landlord excellent and friendly -- an amazing difference. Happy to help with food for the children. Free extra bread with the meal. Beer (ale) excellent. Very impressed overall: this is a "proper" pub but with good service and proper emphasis, not too prissy, straightforward and honest. Prices not cheap, but fine.

Wow! 23 for three crab sandwiches. Won't be going there again. Staff were offhand but beer was OK albeit with a boring selection of 6X and the like. The dining room at the back is attractive, but I'm not sure I can afford to eat there again.
