Closed when I arrived so went to the Blacks head, which I like even though the beer is not great and they play music. A few people in, nice atmosphere and friendly bar maid. Not sure why the Blacks head is not listed on BITE, but I give it 7/10.

Paid a visit today and it's still a delightful pub, a friendly local. Sampled the Timothy Tayloe's Landlord which was on form. :-)

Agree with previous comments, a real gem of a pub and given the opening hours my brother and I called in yetserday (Sunday) and enjoyed a pint of Skinner's Betty Stoggs which was on very fine form, it's a beer we know well. They had a radio playing at a low volume and it was a nice place to chill out for a bit and put the world to rights. It would be good if they also opened on a Saturday afternoon.

Super little backstreet local, but watch out for previously mentioned limited opening hours. Small main bar room with benches off to right, occupied by the local knitting circle on our visit on a busy Friday night. Very welcoming staff and superbly kept beers, room off to left dominated by pool table, but still a couple of small tables and benches all around the walls. Very convivial and lively atmosphere all round, a real sense of people out enjoying themselves in a traditional old setting.

Friendly village local with 5 cask ales during our Sunday lunchtime visit - Church End Fallen Angel, Skinners Betty Stoggs, Bass, TT Landlord and Whim Hartington IPA. Customers are a mixture of walkers and locals.

A proper back street local where you can sit down and have a chat over perfectly served beer. A pool room sits off to the side of the bar. Out the back is one of the cosiest little smoking areas that I have seen. Very busy last Thursday evening which is a good sign in these troubled times. This is the best pub in Wirksworth.

*NO* hesitation what so ever 10/10 because the Royal Oak is an absolute GEM.

It is a small privately owned, traditional and totally unspoilt pub, run by the owners, John and Avis. It is like a breath of fresh air for the serious mature drinker because it is what REAL pubs used to be like

No plasma TVs, no jukebox, and no cooking smells. But there are interesting items of brewery and local memorabilia on display and you can be assured of a genuine warm welcome and a choice of five real ales normally Landlord, Bass and Hartington IPA plus two guests (often including one from Sharps) ALL of which are in a SUPERB condition.

I have to declare an interest because John and I have known each other for more years than either of us really care to admit to. That said, there can be few licensees who have been in the trade longer and have so much experience. The quality of the beer and the atmosphere at the Royal Oak are a testament to this.

But please be aware of the limited opening hours to avoid disappointment. The Royal Oak is only open in the evening from 8pm and their only lunchtime session is 12 noon to 3pm on Sundays.
