Planned to go for a walk at Old Winchester Hill. It just rainned and rained! We met with friends from Alton as a half way point from Fareham and we had a meal. we went for the steak & mushroom pie. it was hot and delicious, the pub got very busy after 1200, very popular place and its off the main A32 Road this usedto be a Friary Meux pub. Its by a river and will get busy when sunny. They had a range of Wadsworth Traditional Ales and a guest beer from the Isle of Wight. Check their website on Google well worth a visit, were going to go there again.

Took a group of walkers here after a wet tramp up to Old Winchester Hill Fort and it went down very well indeed. The 'small' fish and chips is just right for lunch. The sandwiches also went down well, especially when assisted by a pint of 6X (the IPA generated rather less enthusiasm) and are very good value for this part of the world. Friendly, helpful staff and whoever's in the kitchen did a great job, producing more than a dozen meals so they were all ready at the same time, and that was only 30 minutes after ordering. Will definitely be back.

We spent an extremely pleasant evening at the Shoe Inn after walking all day in the rain on the South Downs Way. The staff were charming and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. When I enquired which of the meals were gluten-free the barman was very well-informed, and the chef prepared a gluten-free batter for a delicious fish and chips. This attention to detail is rare in London restaurants and I did not expect to find it in a small village pub on the South Downs. Full marks for everything - my friends food was also top-class. Good wine, good food, a roaring log fire and a friendly welcome - what more could we ask for?

Seems to be popular for its food, but this is also a very pleasant place to stop for a drink. Good beers and nice loacation next to the river.

We had lunch here on July 27th 2011. Nothing much changed since GazzaTheBeerman was there in 2009. A really fine pub. Indeed the clientel has an average age of 60+ during lunch, but I think the food and beverage prices are fair. This pub is on my favorite list if I am in the area again.

Good if pricey food, and well kept beer, more restaurant than pub in some ways though and a wealthy clientel will keep it that way I suspect.

Wadsworths IPA was nice. The Horizon was even better. A pub where people come to eat. The main menu is in front of you as you walk through the main door. Everyone also looks at the dessert menu before deciding what to choose and no wonder. After eating a superb main course the apple and sultana crumble was to die for. Following a twelve mile hike along the South Downs Way this was a fabulous way to end the day.

Great Food and excellent beer . The Wadworths 6 x and IPA were in very fine condition - highly recommended Village Inn
