user reviews of the Talking Heads, Portswood

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

They have now moved to the Polygon (street) in Central Southampton and the new venue is superb, much larger and with the same range of beers which on our visit to see Magenta on 09/04/17 was in excellent condition. Of note is that the front bar is open to the public and although the rear bar is open for gigs the same range of real ales is available in there. A rare event these days is decent ale and music. I shall try and present this as a new entry.

Yes ok it has taken us a while to return but we were disappointed on Saturday's visit to find the place is closing and being converted to student accommodation. The live music venue is moving to The Maple Leaf The Polygon near Central station. Lets hope the choice of beers goes with them.

Yes as said below, main bar has a nice bohemian feel. Friendly staff and nice beer. Good prices.
Recommended.

We came to see Anathema play and were pleasantly surprised at the quantity of decent real ales available. Sadly one of us was driving but we shall return on a non music night

Another pub that is very difficult to get to/from. The front bar has a vaguely Bohemian feel with odd furniture, plants and ornaments. The rear room was preparing for a live music event, for a charge. Ales were varied - Triple fff Goldffinger & Alton's Pride, Longdog Kismet & Upham Punter. At first glance, the only cider appeared to be Addlestones. But Mr Whiteheads Novo Pyrus & Heart of Hampshire caught my eye in boxes on the rear bar, as I was staggering to the toilet. A very nice pub. I left most of my friends in here to try one more pub in the area and returned to encounter a rather mad, but friendly Bruce Forsyth lookalike outside the pub - rather surreal.

Excellent pub and the superb Lamplight Porter is only 3 quid a pint

Visited late afternoon and enjoyed ska playlist and an ok micro in a cracking pub atmosphere.

Mark (from the Crown in Highfield) has now taken this pub over. He's making a real go of it. Real ales as good as ever. He's even got the paintbrush out. Blimey......

Bizarre place. A loud rock band were playing in the back,I was ejected to the entrance bar because I wouldn't pay. It was a room of heritage quality, though now unloved. Pewter type bar top that some clown painted over and someone else made a bad job of removing the paint. Handpumps not polished since Adam was a lad. EXCELLENT Flowerpots Goddens I will say, from a barrel behind the bar, amply colled and fresh. Bizarre I say. Should be on CAMRA heritage list.

The good news is that the Tuesday jazz is continuing, the bad news is that it is now only going to be monthly.

This pub is improvrd by the smoking ban.
The only problem is, that the effluent plant the other side of the railway can now be smelled, now that the masking smoke has gone!

Great jazz on alternate Tuesday evenings form the Solent City Jazz Band.

Went there for the jazz, yesterday.
The toilets were disgusting, but the music was great!

Good cheap prices for the interestingly named beers from Itchen Brewery.
I went there for the jazz from Solent City Jazzmen which was up to their usual standard! They play there on alternate Tuesdays.
The only problems are the hot smoky atmosphere and UV light, which started to hurt my eyes.

Alas, this pub is now no more. Either that or there's just no-one in there ever or they like it with all the lights off anyway. Shame, nice pub.

Check out the Candle Club on Monday nights. Great (if sometimes amateur) live music.
