Has had an internal makeover, modern 'plastic' bar, a glorified gin bar, noisy when we looked in. No real ales on, did not stop.

Busy on our visit last Sunday, still a decent pub. Had Moorehouse's 'White Witch', which was very good.

Yes Freddy i am calling you a liar, and i think you have a some gripe with this pub,for whatever reason i don't know.We took over this pub in Sept 2009 and we are still here and doing really well. The price of cask ale when you said you came in was 2.70 per pint it is now 2.75.You also say you were the only person in on a saturday night and one barman on duty.Utter and complete lies we have at least 8 staff on saturday nights including 2 pot collectors.I rest my case your a liar.Blue Scrumpy's review is genuine and i would agree Saturday afternoons in Jan/Feb are very quiet but do build up as the weather gets warmer.

Another very quiet pub in the northern reaches of Wigan. The interior is fairly pleasant with a couple of traditional bars and some nice touches. The barman was fairly friendly and talkative. But we were the only customers there and he was surprised to see anybody on a Saturday afternoon. 2 ales were on - Timothy Taylor Landlord & Everards Triple Tiger. The range of pumpclips on the ceilings suggests that they generally have plenty of guests.

and besides i said 3.10, not 3.20. Try actually reading a post before spouting off. You clearly are the liar. I'll never forget that day as i'd never ever been charged over 3 for a pint of bitter in the north west.

HOW dare you call me a liar! I know this pub and surrounding area very well from the mid 1980's, e.g. The Saracen's head pub across the road long since demolished for the ring road, the white hart pub, the old ta centre, Billy Boston running the next pub down. I Got charged over 3 for first and last beer in the Bowling Green in early 2010 and you don't like it. Fine, but don't libel me about what was the truth. It is a shadow of its former self, and been through countless managers over the years.. Sorry if you don't like the truth that it was overpriced and empty on a Saturday evening - when at one time the place was buzzing at that time of day/week.

Hello im the landlord of this pub,the comment left by freddy is complete lies,we have never charged 3.20 for a pint of cask ale.It is 2.70 across the board regardless of the strength, and it is not empty! Are you sure you were in this pub freddy?

This has always been a great unspoilt pub with good staff. It is now probably often empty at the extortionate price of the cask. When asked for 3.10 in a wigan pub i thought i had misheard. Regret i won't be going back.

Yes there is a small discount on cask ales at the moment (2.40, still not the cheapest in town), as the pub unfortunately seems to be struggling apart from at weekends. A real shame, as along with the Swan and Railway it is the only historic and unspoilt pub interior in Wigan really, with the gantried bar, real fire and intact vault and lounge, with a pool room out of the way at the back. Lots of panelling and leather seating too. Tetleys and Deuchars are always on sale, and Landlord and a Wychwood beer were the guests. Always in good form too, and when the pub is busy the atmosphere is bustling. If in Wigan take the short walk out and give it a go as you won't be disappointed.

First visited this marvelous pub 2 years ago - and had a great time. Vintage interior with a circular bar. I was a little disappointed with the real ale selection on my most recent visit however - only 2 or 3 were available, but at a very reasonable discounted price. Most of the pubs were unused - but a sensible move by the landlord, better having 2 or 3 beers being turned over than 8 beers sitting there. As previously mentioned, it appears there is a "sale" on at the moment and many drinks are discounted. I worry this place is struggling somewhat - the first time I visited on a Friday afternoon this place was buzzing - when I went in last friday, it was empty. A crying shame if so. Beware, opens at 4pm. A must visit still however.

Friendly multi-roomed local on the 'Wigan Lane' circuit with seperate vault, pool table, log fire in winter and a beer garden. Changing range of guest ales too makes this amongst the best pubs in Wigan.
