user reviews of the Willy Wicket, Downend

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

i'm sure i've reviewed this before but it seems to have disappeared.

I used to quite like the place - not a great atmosphere but the food was good and the welcome was friendly. Unfortunately in recent times this seems to have gone downhill. Some friends were recently asked to leave as they were "sat for too long at their table after dinner" - hardly the friendliest way to treat customers. I went there last week and as soon as we said we weren't eating the staff seemed to lose interest. Beer was Butcombe - normally a good bet but this pint was mediocre!

Unfortunately some of my work colleagues like the place so i'm sure i'll be back there again, but not by choice!

Oh dear oh dear.

What can I say, a typical new estate pub which thinks it serves good food, wrong.

It is the typical hell hole that is filled (certainly during the day) with screaming kids and parents who could not care less who their delightful offspring annoy.

There are so many better options.

Visited on a wet and miserable Wednesday lunch time during the school holidays and there wasn't a child in sight - a real bonus! Our visit got off to a shaky start as there was no one behind the bar for a good 5 minutes, which led to a build up of people waiting to order food and drinks. However from there on the experience just got better. It is a "vintage inn" so if you've eaten in another pub in this chain you will know the menu pretty well. However the food was well cooked, the waiting time between courses was acceptable, the staff were very pleasant and attentive without being intrusive. The place itself was clean and well fitted out. All in all this was a very pleasant eating experience in a nice relaxed atmosphere. When we first arrived the place was fairly empty, but filled up quite quickly, despite this the service remained slick. Would the place be as welcoming and efficient during the evening? Not sure, but we will give it a try sometime.

Full of children, food was nothing special, won't be revisiting.

It's a Mitchell & Butler chain pub so you know what to expect. Nicely fitted out and although the beers were in good condition, it's the usual suspects. Food is much improved recently but what really lets this primarily eating venue down is the consistently slow service. There is never enough staff on so even when the pub is almost empty you have to wait ages to get served.
Definately better than most theme pubs though.
