Five and Lime, Guildford

user reviews of the Five and Lime, Guildford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

People are right it`s not a pub pretty soulless really, no reason for us to visit again.
stroller - 28 Aug 2016 05:39
A bar rather than a pub which specialises in selling your fairly typical range if lager such as Becks Vier, Kronenbourg and Red Stripe. No ale, but they do sell Guinness so no surprise there. One for the younger crowd.
EyeOfTheTigerBeer - 14 May 2012 19:27
Can get cramped, but if out for partying , not a bad place to go...though this is a bar...not a pub...so don't go if you want a pint of real ale and home made pie...
d.franks - 28 Apr 2011 19:33
Oh dear, it's obvious that the negative comments on here were written by jealous wannabe rival landlords!!! I haved live in Guildford for ten years plus. Five and Lime is definately one of the best if not the best bar in Guildford. Fact! It certainly not your run of the mill sh*te. Friday and Saturday nights are busy, but hey what do you expect, (and - what do you want? If you want real ale, then duh goto an old persons boozer. The atmosphere is always warm and friendly, and inside is modern fresh. There are always lots of bar staff on so you get served in good time! With a great selection of bottles beers and dozens of wacky spirits to work through you wont be dissapointed. DJ's spin some awesome tunes at weekends and event nights. If the 2am finish isn't enough then goto there sister pub the Legion!!!

Grog - 8 Nov 2010 23:21
It is far from my choice of a pub I have to say, but I suppose I should have realised with the greens lights. This is definitely a younger persons place to visit. No real ale whatsoever but that was hardly a surprise I must say. Given the limited choice I stuck with Becks Vier - which was tasteless and poor. The Guinness may have been better. I feel this is actually a Bar and not a Pub and will rate it low.
JohnOcean - 23 Dec 2009 13:25
Cramped and cliquey on Wednesday nights. Popped in here yesterday (18 Nov) when looking for some one amongst the youngish crowd present (mainly 25 and under I say). If you are, however, looking for lively atmosphere in Guildford town centre on a Wednesday night a rarity in itself then this is the probably the only place to go. I understand that selected drinks are relatively cheaper here as well.
Searching_for_H_Files - 19 Nov 2009 11:53
Bad prices & would not eat or drink here. shame.
PubWithTheGrub - 13 Nov 2009 01:35
Bad prices & would not eat or drink here. shame.
PubWithTheGrub - 13 Nov 2009 01:35
Hardly a drinkers paradise, more of a young persons place it must be said. If you wanna spend well over 3 quid for just a regular beer then i''d recomment this estabilishemtn but generally this pub is a bit of an over rated place and its not exactly cool on the music front either.. go 2 royal oak instead.
BestBeerBoffin - 13 Nov 2009 01:17
A little boring but better than Haha.
running_around_pubs - 28 Sep 2009 12:03
Ok bar nothing great better than when it was the Carptenters Arms before the Mary Rose.
Drmilo you need to take a pill and get out more, why do you only big up the same two bars that are in the same chain more like Dr Strange.
stroller - 3 Jul 2009 10:34
this place rocks, wish i was there right now! cheerful friendly staff, great door policy to keep the idiots out.
love it.
DrMilo - 24 Jun 2009 17:16
Quite a small city pub.

Ok for the odd drink however.

Music tends to be your dance variety.

Not bad outside in the summer months.
best_pub_in_city - 21 Jun 2009 19:37
wednesdays cheap drinks

tahts a 10 from me :)
kegger22 - 6 Apr 2009 19:50
Went here on a Saturday night and it was very busy, we did manage to find a seat but all felt a bit like sardines...as with anywhere on a Saturday night, I suppose!

Cocktails were very nice and well made, the barmaids were very cheerful and service was quick despite the business.

Wasn't too loud in there either, unlike some of the other bars that are trying to be clubs without the dancefloor (HaHa?).

Didn't spend a lot of time out there but the smoking patio was large, seemed to be heated and was playing some great music!
Cloverfield - 1 Apr 2009 13:55
If you're like me (30, like proper beers and good old fashioned pubs) then this isn't the place for you. Full of posers, very loud and expensive. Over-rated in my book and has been ever since it became the Five and (S)lime (wasn't it some 'wreck' called the Mary Rose or something before?)
beergibbon - 28 Mar 2009 21:46
not much of a good beer pub better than some of the crappy other bars in town though.
BigAleDrinkhead - 1 Nov 2008 18:07
Not a fan. This place is long past it's heyday if you ask me.
Doyenne - 9 Sep 2008 23:27
On my first visit to this pub we had a lovely lunch, staff were polite and helpful. So when we had a special occassion to celebrate with visiting family, we took them to five and lime. What a disaster! the chip fryer broke o we were offered oven chips..okay....we waited an hour and a half for our food, one meal came out fifteen minutes before all the rest and then when the othr meals arrived everything was cold with all the food apart from the chips burnt (presumably waiting for the chips to cook). We were so hungry we had to eat it (i'm pregnant so not eating was not an option), we were not offered anything...not even a round of drinks whilst we waited. Such a shame as it would've been somewhere we went to alot.
cariadjones - 21 Aug 2008 20:58
Not somewhere special to visit. Really a lager pub / wine bar. Has a outdoor bit which is cool. But the novelty wears off after a few visits. Music can be great but really should be changed back to a nice pub with a decent pint while keeping its trendy image. You can find a lot worse in Guildford. However it seems to have lost some of it buzz in the last year.
wizzardofoz - 12 Jul 2008 00:03
Staff and management at it again Shame on you!!!!
Beersupper - 9 Jul 2008 18:06
Love it! Always the first port of call when I am in Guildford. Funky decor, great music, friendly atmosphere and the outside courtyard is definitely a bonus. Highly recommended.
cpepper - 8 Jul 2008 13:59
I'm thinking Oska is not part of this stitch-up.

Anyway... the five and lime, better than the legion. have eaten here once, the beer is better than some bars too.
TheSurreyPubMan - 8 Jul 2008 11:52
We love this bar!
Have been going for the past 10 yrs to enjoy my weekly wind down on a friday and wind up on a saturday .With fab music, it always rocks! Staff are always beautiful and friendly, and management always recognise us and make sure we have a great night.
I can't recommend it highly enough for the best night out in Guildford, so get yr asses down there and have a Mandarin Vodka and cranberry! or two or three or..4..5..!
partyhard - 8 Jul 2008 11:03
This is a fantastic bar and has always been a favourite of mine in Guildford, always buzzing in the evening with a variety of different djs on different nights. They also have a great range of food served all day, I had a homemade burger for lunch and the wife had a salad which were both delicious.
oska - 8 Jul 2008 10:54
This place rocks. Best pub in Guildford (maybe after The Legion). Never had a bad night there. Friendly staff, great outside area for smoking, top music. Who needs more?
sparrowlegs - 8 Jul 2008 09:35
oh, yea, definitely still open.
DrMilo - 7 Jul 2008 22:55
I love this place, the girls are hot and friendly and they don't let idiots in so there is no aggro.
Always good music and a great atmosphere.
Got a garden for drinking in the sun, or smoking in the night, what more do you want?

DrMilo - 7 Jul 2008 22:54
Have been told the place has shut.
stroller - 17 May 2008 14:07
arrived 1st for a party which I hadn't booked but was asked to give my credit card in even though I had cash- later (after many drinks and much money spent)- I left and realised pub still had my card- rang pub and was irritated because no apology for not returning card (we had been only customers at the time)- As well as no apology, manager said he would cut up card if I couldn't get card back- Had to drive 10 miles to get card and was told it was MY FAULT FOR FORGETTING CARD!!!! Manager was a pratt and this pub doesn't give a damn about customers
markgirvan - 28 Feb 2008 22:31
Yeah i"m with anonymous what is a bloody H-file!,i thought he was just cruising the bars for skirt, but in one report he mentions his girlfriend (perhaps she does"nt read this site).Mind you always posts good reviews about the high"s and low"s of Guildford"s pubs.Even though he never seems to pull any skirt!!!
Talks a good H-file!
winchesterclub - 13 Dec 2007 15:18
What the heck is a bloody H-file anyway???
anonymous - 30 Sep 2007 14:13
My younger sister was a DJ here Bank Holiday Sunday night as we arrived around 7ish. How fit is the young blonde barmaid working here! Maybe a bit young for me given she is 18 though! My sister and the other DJ's were set up in the garden which considering how relatively small it is, eventually became cramped as the night progressed. The struggle for space outside was also compounded by the odd broken pint glass and people frequently bumping into you. I spoke to a couple of women for instance moaning about drinks being spilt on them. Not to mention that smokers can smoke out here as it's not enclosed, so you could end up with burns from cigarette butts. The result is that you end up more battered, burnt and bruised than Amy Winehouse after a night out.

The atmosphere both inside and outside appeared jovial and relaxed, though shame the view from the garden is blocked by what looks like an office block. There was certainly more blokes here than women which hindered my H-File search, but in truth I was just happy to listen and support my sister DJ.

Inside there are comfy leather sofas by the windows if you wish to sit down, but again the bar area becomes difficult to move around when busy. It can take a while to be served as well, but overall I found the bar staff helpful, with the young blonde barmaid brightening up my night each time I got a glimpse of her.

Anyway, if you're a fan of house music and not too bothered about dancing (as inside is too tiny and outside presumably becomes too packed over the weekend), I'd recommend this glorified pub over a Friday/Saturday night. It is too small for me and my quest for the H-Files though.

Searching_for_H_Files - 28 Aug 2007 13:00
Service poor says it all really.
stroller - 30 Jul 2007 15:56
I've been coming here for years, but lately I'm not so keen either. All the snogging couples outside give it the tacky atmosphere of a school disco, and we already have Flares for that. Maybe I'm just getting old but I go out at night to drink NOT queue. Relegated to a lunch place for me I'm afraid.
beaniebeer - 15 Jul 2007 02:35
OK, Interesting menu.
wizzardofoz - 10 Jul 2007 20:05
having dj'ed at the five and lime now for over 6 years (since it opened)would just like to say thanks for all your positive comments, (and bad.)
and they have not changed there door policey and has been the same all the time i have been there,
markiestrudie - 2 Jul 2007 18:33
There are far too many WAG wannabes and would be playboys in here for me to feel comfortable any more.

Perhaps increased competition in this busy town centre has forced them to change their door policy?

All those ex-RSVP customers have to go somewhere I suppose.
LunchLadyDoris - 28 Jun 2007 13:14
I know it's in Guildford but I went in therer last week with the missus, ordered two bottles of Magners and was charged 8.40 of the Queens English pounds.

When I asked the bar man to explain the price he informed me that 4.20 was nothing as a botle of Magners up the road was a fiver. So, that's all right then.
anonymous - 20 Jun 2007 15:04
Nice place for a lunch out as well as a night out.
The menu is resonably priced and has surprisingly interesting choices - how about a spinach burger?
aleman - 3 Jun 2007 11:07
Been in there a few times lately, and not bad, but better bars in Guildford than this one in my opinion.
Phillipa - 3 May 2007 08:55
Nice bar, very friendly atmosfear, never seen any kind of trouble, must be down to a good door policy,
best house music in guildford, professional dj's every weekend,
can't wait to next weekend......
anonymous - 9 Apr 2007 19:25
nice pub for a night out
anonymous - 4 Apr 2007 02:55
Is it me or has it gone a little too "meat market" in here lately?

The last time I went it felt a bit too "footballers wives in waiting" heavy and there was lots of groping and snogging couples in the alley nearby.

I used to like the diversity of clientele, and the fact that the place seemed to have a bit of class - for want of a better word.

Here's hoping that my last visit was a blip and Five and Lime hasn't lost it and turned into a clone of every other bar in Guildford town centre.

jackie_sunshine - 4 Apr 2007 01:00
I really don't think I look like a minor, but I got carded at the door :(

A trendy-ish bar with pretty good music. Fairly mixed crowd of young professionals, with the occasional student. Don't expect to find a seat/table as it gets pretty busy.

An average bar, would help if they spiced up the drinks menu.
j9gal - 13 Feb 2007 14:51
first time in this weekend.
I was pissed off with the queue, but once inside you realise why, nice mix of people (definately better than your average punter)
great atmosphere in the garden with the djs and i like the fact the girls make an effort. (not that i got anywhere) but the scenery was nice.

you guys only rate 7/10 or something according to the site. wtf? 10 from the dog.
the_dog_that_bit_me - 11 Feb 2007 17:48
I'm glad you get turned away ... unless youre a hottie??
yea actually there are way too many blokes in guildford. try HA HA. and im glad tht someone is keeping a balance.
just let the fit blokes in then please jP
10/10 for the music.

jeni_Palmer - 10 Feb 2007 19:59
The review below should read - they turn away big groups of men at the weekends - oops
Callum251 - 23 Dec 2006 22:39
This is one venue where the doorman & managers have got the picking mix right. At the weekend the turn away bi groups of men so there is a much nicer atmosphere. It's full of honeys which makes a change from all the other bars in town. open until 1.30 at the weekend but 11.00 during some weeknights which is a bit of a shame. Love this pub 9/10
Callum251 - 23 Dec 2006 22:37
Pretty good atmosphere... Was here yesterday and tried to chat up David the barman (or at least, that's what he said his name was, along with 20 others).

The git gave me his mobile number, but as I sobbered up, I realised it was the number from radio 1 flirt divert (you know, where all those who ring it are live and shamed).

I can live with it, but it's not very flattering to be given that number. Plus, I think I actually deserved a clear 'not interested' from him. He left me hanging all night... So girls, don't even think about it. I think he would have been too cocky for me anyway.
Oh well, he missed his chance...

As for the rest, I really liked the music and the layout of the room is quite nice (I like the fact that each table is in little corners and it's quite intimate... but you do indeed need to shout way too much to hold a conversation). Like the courtyard at the back. You can have some fresh air without having to go outside and queue again.
Frenchgirl - 16 Dec 2006 17:25
Good quality of beer considering it has very much a bar/club feel to the place rather than a pub feel. Getting a seat gets easier as it gets towards its 1.30 closing time (on fridays and saturdays) not sure about other days
anonymous - 18 Nov 2006 11:59
Door staff are very strict at this place. No trainers are allowed so make sure you have shoes. Also got to be careful about what items you take in here. Its alright on the inside
aleman - 29 Oct 2006 11:03
What a great Pub, Brilliant staff, friendly and not too dear. The customers are all nice too. Music and atmoshere is excellent and you are greeted by very friendly door staff who welcome you!
10 out of 10 for me!
thecelticgenius - 25 Oct 2006 12:39
We come in here on Saturday lunch times when many other eateries are busy. Generally it is always quiet, always get a table, always get above average pub food, the staff are always polite and friendly, and there is no loud music! An oasis in an often crowded Guildford!
anonymous - 24 Sep 2006 12:50
Great place, been going for not long but enough to decide I will definetely come back!!!!!!!!!!!

And can anyone tell me who the bar tender is?
Isn't he just gorgeous? Please someone give me his name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mari - 5 Aug 2006 23:37
Nice atmosphere. Music was way too loud, was very hard to hold a conversation. Not over packed. Love the girls Loo door! lol
kazaddress - 7 Jul 2006 11:08
Generally speaking, I'm a 'top of town' kind of girl so this is one of my regular haunts. The main reason I love it here is - as one of the other reviewers put it - 'scum quota zero'! I LIKE my fellow customer in here. They are often what makes the night great. I always see some old faces and meet some new cute ones. I've felt right at home here since day one.
The bar staff know what they're doing, and it must be well run because you never see any trouble.
Food is fine and the drink selection covers most of the bases - but that's not the reason we all come here.
It's for the ambience man!

beaniebeer - 25 May 2006 02:47
Yeah the music IS too loud but hey we're young aren't we?! It just means you have to lean in close to hear what that fittie is saying to you!

They definitely choose who to let in & who not to, but if it keeps the chavs and a*ses out then that's fine with me.

I love hanging out in the garden in the summer-time evenings, & when shopping in Guildford I park in the multi-storey opposite & often stop off for a post shopping drink and a snack.

The barstaff aren't as friendly as some of the other places I go, but they're cool! They do their job.
Sunny_Sunnarsson - 28 Apr 2006 17:50
In here recently for a few pre-night out drinks, very impressed apart from the arrogant barstaff, nice atmosphere but music toooooo loud!! Came for a conversation not a shouting match!! Great deals midweek, bargain prices.
mooty123 - 7 Apr 2006 00:35
Awful, awful, awful! This "bar" embodies everything that is wrong with small town England. Door policy being dictated by retarded doormen, who struggle to speak English.

In the end, walked around the corner to the Ha-ha bar and canteen. Which, while still suffering from Small Town Syndrome was infinitley better than this turd of a bar.

Robbo73 - 1 Apr 2006 13:04
I don't know what it is about this place, but there's always a great atmosphere here. I'm not certain if they have a selective door policy, or if it's just the kind of place which attracts ahem.. "your better class of punter", but I always look around and feel comfortable, and at home.

The staff are generally great - capable, and friendly enough. (There's usually enough of them too, which is always a sign of a well run establishment, with respect for its customers.)

We especially like the courtyard to hang out in a group - and meet new people!

It's a little bit on the "too cool for school" side, and they play the music loud, but we always have a good night there.
LunchLadyDoris - 7 Mar 2006 20:39
In my humble opinion this is indeed the best bar in Guildford, great food, great music, top selection of beers, friendly staff, scum quota zero...what more can I say?
markaj - 7 Feb 2006 22:31
Best bar in Guildford, shame it's not a bit bigger, but the back garden makes it unique and quaite funky feel in the evenings.
mattclapham - 25 Oct 2005 20:14
music spoilt conversation but that just means not the pub for me because people do like loud atmosphere but yum the satff are fitties.
derka - 19 Aug 2005 01:46
Great place to hang out. Not only attractive batmaids but pretty nice looking barman too! excellent service. Management could do with smiling abit more but wicked none the less.
rc_bich - 17 May 2005 22:18
Wouldn't let me in because I had camoflague trousers on ????
How could they see them !!!!
W980501 - 13 Apr 2005 12:13
One of the better bars in Guildford. You may need to queue on a Fri/Sat but good music policy and wide choice of bottled lagers (Jamaican, South African etc) make up for this.
ben_the_melon - 28 Mar 2005 21:21
A rather small place to go really, not really the most interesting place in Guildford. The Jamaican beer red strike is pretty good though
aleman - 1 Feb 2005 12:41
Seems to be fairly easy to get seats on Sundays. Has the rare quality of serving Red Stripe. Atmosphere here can be a bit boring, and it feels a bit cramped. Overall it is ok though
Will2 - 31 Jan 2005 18:29
Seems pretty cool but it is always too busy on an evening. Enjoy, but don't plan on sitting down!
fivepints - 6 Jan 2005 09:04
Surly Staff, which is a shame as there's something about the atmosphere that makes it a unique watering hole. Surroundings are good, but you feel as though you're interrupting something more important than serving beer.
anonymous - 28 Dec 2004 18:10
First visit last Saturday. Worth the trip from Reading to meet friends there.
anonymous - 18 Oct 2004 17:22
Easily the best bar in Guildford. Lovers of quality soulful house music need look no further. Great atmosphere at weekends, really getting itself on the map. Top DJ Paul Farris played just a few weeks back.
Paul - 22 Sep 2004 15:35
Perfect place, and the best pub in Guildford. Suits the Norwegian Viking well!
anonymous - 14 Sep 2004 14:29
Terrible place, Dreadfully rude manager
Rosmary - 12 Sep 2004 15:25
absolutely love it! quiet easily the best place in guildford. efficient bar staff, gorgeous and friendly crowd and there not too pushy or forceful. great atmosphere and gorgous food!
anonymous - 17 Aug 2004 14:06
A cool place with good music and nice beer. Can get crowded at the weekends.
bob - 20 May 2004 12:51
fit barmaids, top draw
Doug - 9 May 2004 21:39
I agree with steve o - the bar staff are very easy on the eye, but Id say the place is well staffed. I reckon they have the same number of staff as Wetherspoons. Yes, its a cool place and sometimes the punters are a little sub-zero, but theyre amusing to watch nonetheless. Then theres the odd night when the carnival must arrive in town and its full of really odd folk. Strange. But I do love the place. Musics also very good most of the time. That's why it gets so busy.
Calum - 26 Apr 2004 22:54
A cool place to hang out. I think it comes into its own in the summer when the garden space is packed. It's not especially friendly as some of the patrons are too cool to mingle but hey, I can't blame the bar for that! I'm working my way slowly through the flavoured vodkas!
jackie_sunshine - 19 Apr 2004 20:03
Been going for years, great place, good music. Good looking bar staff but probably the worse service in guildford.
steve o - 13 Apr 2004 11:35
tried the five & lime for the first time, came down from manchester for the night. I have never seen a bar with a vibe as cool as this - cheers . please send one up north soon Cheers x marissa
marissa - 8 Apr 2004 17:26
very friendly staff/door staff and always busy, , wicked music and the best house dj's in guildford..no violence just nice people. the only place to be seen in guildford... and the bar maids aint bad either
markie - 13 Feb 2004 04:19
Been awarded an entertainment license for its DJing efforts in the beer garden so it will be open late on Fridays and Saturdays!
Mortonian - 5 Feb 2004 10:52
Shame it's always so busy and doesn't do ros but otherwise great vibe and cool crowd.
OpheliaImmortal - 23 Dec 2003 13:47
mmmmm, don't be fooled by the good looking barmaids, if you're queing for this place on a friday outside, then there aint much hope. Fashion victims and tarty women with Chardonnay's.
Gareth - 27 Nov 2003 17:59
This place has the best looking barmaids in the entire world. Top place to chill. Food good.
Ed - 24 Oct 2003 00:06
My mate Stuart used to be a regular and loved it (young, vibey crowd).
Vindaloo - 16 Aug 2003 08:39
Wicked little bar, always packed on w/e especially in the summer as the back garden has a dj! Dressed up crowd and good service most of the time. Definitely the coolest place in Guildford to hang out...
Grace Collier - 11 Jul 2003 15:33
Great little place. Small but bustling with atmosphere. Comfy leather seating in places. Small patio enclosed area at the back - gas heaters provide an all-season drinking area. No food. Dress to impress.
mat briggs - 10 Jul 2003 15:04
