Fine but could probably do better. The ales are in good condition, especially the Silver Adder, but it is a slightly tired showcase for the Mauldon brewery - they didn’t have the firm’s blackberry porter on tap, an ale I have enjoyed previously at a beer festival. The place was very quiet of a Friday night and service quite brusque – a possible reaction to our wearing masks. AFC Sudbury’s FA Cup derby match against Colchester was on the telly so that may be a reason for the pub being quiet.

Decent traditional pub [Black Adder Brewery Tap in full], friendly barmaid, sixeable smoking area at rear. I indulged in Mauldon's 'Silver Adder' a decent ale].

friendly, excellent ales - quality and range. Even the toilets are spotless

Still the best pub in Sudbury.

Sadly I had been living in the town for a year before I found this gem. Simple pub, no music, No machines friendly staff, papers and a good range of beer, and guest beers. Also a wheat beer erdinger on tap beautiful drop.

can get a bit crowded on Friday and Saturday nights

Food is snacks and is not really worth writing about - But they let you bring your own they will give you a plate, knife and fork condiments as well.

the perfect local pub

This is a total gem of a real ale haven. A blue print of how 'it should be done'. Even had Dark Star on my visit. Wish this was my local..

Bright, bareboarded, street corner pub. Just a little way out of town (as in not visible from the church/Edinburgh Woollen Mill part of East St.). It is undoubetdly the best pub in the town, if a little 'clinical'. The Mauldons brews plus a couple of guest ales are on offer. The Mauldon Suffolk Pride and their Blackberry Porter were both excellent. If you like proper ale then it's your only real option in the town.

Superb! Had a pint of Monks Gold from the Tring brewery. Well, 3 to be exact! Great selection of ales, nice relaxed but bubbly atmosphere. Highly recommended...

Lived upto all expectations. Tried Mole Trap & Silver Adder from the extensive Mauldon's range available - both excellent.
Also Cain's Dragon Heart & Milestone's Sherwood Stag.
The Pork Pies looked excellent & it was a joy to be able to play Bar Billiards again ( Yes I know I dont get out much !).
Can't wait to make a return visit

Excellent pub! Found it from the CAMRA Good Beer Guide while in the area and went back the following weekend for their Beer Festival - not that there wasn't enough choice for most people on the first visit.

They don't normally do food, but if you bring in food or order a take-away to be delivered, they will provide plates and cutlery. They have 4-pint take-away beer containers too.

There's no car park, but we managed to park up the deadend road beside it on both occasions. Staff are friendly, helpful and know about their beers.

Called in on a Friday teatime - standing room only! Moletrap was the beer of choice - very drinkable. Salt beef bap was great value and something I haven't had for years. Well worth a visit if you are in this neck of the woods.

Excellent pub that I chanced upon as I drove through Sudbury on Sat afternoon.

I may have missed all the beers on offer, but they certainly included the following Mauldon's ales:

Silver Adder
Black Adder
Dickens
Suffolk Pride
Micawber's Mild
Mole Trap.

A guest ale (from an Essex brewery - can't remember the name) had just finished. I had a half of the Dickens and the Silver Adder. The latter was superb, and both were excellent value at 1.25 a half (2.50 a pint).

Great to see a dartboard and a bar billiards table in a pub - both in use during my short stop. Newspapers were scattered around for people to read. It was definitely a place you'd want to dwell in, and we were made to feel very welcome - were given a sample of the Dickens before we had it.

A lot of thought has clearly been put into the place, with forthcoming events including a Breakfast Club and a Pudding Club (sample something like nine desserts for 9.95). You can see some of the casks through a window by the bar, and some of the beer (perhaps it was the cider??) came straight from the cask.

I can't say I'll be this way again for sometime - but if I am, I know where to go! Oh yes, someone mentioned lack of parking. The pub is on a corner and I parked in the street next to the pub. It's a bit of a scary parking spot though as it's a dead end and you can't turn round at the end, or anywhere down it. The only way is to reverse back down and into the road at the front of the pub. That aspect aside, the pub is highly recommended and one worth taking a train to get to!!!

On handpump, Mauldons Micawber Mild, Moletrap, Silver Adder, Black Adder, Suffolk Pride, Mid-Summer Gold, also, on gravity (tap room visible thru small window beyond bar), White Adder, Pride, Bombardier, & RCH PG Steam. Modern, minimalist feel on entry with bare-board floor to dark wood bar & a few tall tables, but turn left to a mix of seating, various table sizes, solid wood chairs & nice free standing settles. Beyond the bar, the rear area is furnished with a couple of nice large pine tables served by bench settles, there is a dartboard rear right and adjacent bar-billiards table (covered, on our visit). Even here, though, despite the odd photo of the old locale, the white walls above light painted-wood panelling feel a little stark & naked, this made more obvious with the windows all around the L-shaped pub providing so much light I had to think that more wall decoration and, maybe, hops adorning the whitewashed beams around the bar, would lend a softer, lived-in, homely effect. Outside a paved courtyard beer garden had new picnic sets, part covered by giant umbrella. I loved the blackboard at the bar offering filled rolls (1.50), pork pies (2), saltbeef or hot-gammon baps (3), ploughmans (5), how often we want such an easy fix, & how rarely it is found! Otherwise, cutlery is offered for bought-in take-aways and menus for the local Kohinoor are available on window-sill. As previously mentioned, the long-haired german shepherd has a bear-like quality, but is much more friendly. It seems churlish, given the good ale line-up, to complain about restricted choice, but the pub web-site was still announcing a 35-beer festival 17-21Jun even though it had, apparently been cancelled 5 weeks previously. I wish the incumbents well with their new-born twins, but the guv stating that I had more important things on my mind & the website is the brewerys responsibilitydid not exactly douse the flames of frustration after making a specific journey from London.

WARNING! The advertised beer festival (17-21Jun) is not now happening.

Bought by Mauldons Brewery, renamed the Brewery Tap this pub has been truly transformed.

The Beer is excellent, they have six handpumps and several on gravity. Obviously all the Mauldons stable beers are present, but the guests are well picked.

The principles of this pub are sound. Good Beer at decent prices, no Sky or piped music only regular live music, not a food pub only snacks and cutlery and crockery provided if you order a takeaway to be delivered and lots of games, busy dartboard, doms and many others.

The pub is now very popular and has broken the mould of Sudbury pubs, for too long dominated by Greene King. The clientele is very mixed and there is no trouble at all. The staff are all very efficient and very friendly and any beer you are unused to you can taste before you buy.

This pub is as close to heaven as you can get if you don't want to drink in the company of lager swilling idiots.

What a cracking pub. No kids/chavs, just good honest beer. Best pub for miles around.

At last a good pub is Sudbury. Nice selection of beer. No music or games machines. I'm afraid it makes all the other pubs in Sudbury look well below average. Bright and inviting interior. 9/10.

At last a Mauldon's pub in Sudbury. Beers in excellent condition. Staff friendly and enthusiaistic about real ale. No loud music just the great art of conversation. Basic food available - hot pork and stuffing bap perfect for soaking up the Black Adder. I hear they are having a beer festival in April. Watch out for Murphy, was told he is a german shepherd....looks more like a bear (all be it a friendly one!!) if you ask me. Definately the best pub in Sudbury.

This place was re-vamped and re-opened as the Mauldon's Brewery Tap very recently. Took a trip to see what it was like and was very impressed. It's light and clean with no music or fruit machines. A great range of local beers on offer, on my visit they were: Moletrap, Silveradder, Suffolk Pride and Micawbers Mild, all from Mauldons, and also Nethergate Augustines and Earl Soham's Jolabrugg. All of these were in fine form, some from the handpumps, others served from the cask. Limited snack food on offer (rolls, pasties, pies) but they allow customers to bring in take-away food. Far and away the best pub in town and a real treat given the Greede King monopoly in the area.
