user reviews of the Village Inn, Caterham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Advertised outside is 'Carvery & Grill'. We go in the restaurant and get told it's either Pork / Beef so we say okay sit down and get told they will come over and get us drinks. After fifteen minutes of waiting for a drink, we finally get the drink and are told the roast potatoes are being cooked so we have to wait.

Eventually we are told we can go up, the lady behind the counter can not even cut the meat, there is no york shire puddings gravy that looks like it has been sitting there days ......... Put it this way the dinner was nothing to rate, in all fairness i wouldnt want to even give it to an email. Definiately would not recommend guys ..... Stay well clear!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! FINALLY this craphole has closed!!!!! seriously though what the hell took the council so damn long??? everyone I know around Caterham knows what a reputed s**thole it was, the clientele was nothing but chavs and scummy 17 year old's thinking they were badass.

To all the scummy people that used to go there: I feel sorry for whatever place you all go to next!

I was a fan of this Pub/Restaurant until 2 0r 3 years ago, when it reverted to a football pub, mainly for the youngsters. During that time, I gather it has done hundreds of functions, one of which I was lucky enough to attend. There is no hire fee, and I know of someone who held their baby's Christening there last year, and said it was faultless. When I saw the new sign up, advertising it was under new management and would be providing Sunday Carverys, I booked a table. The Carvery was quite the best I and my companian had ever had, and we have since returned for another. The A la Carte menu supplied all week is just what Caterham needs, and I recommend anyone reading this, to give it a try, like we did, as the menu is varied and extensive.

Craphole of a pub. If you are normal then DON'T go in there! I went with my wife on a Saturday evening and have never had the misfortune to lay my eyes on such a sorry bunch of losers in my life! at one point some little 18 year old jumped up chavvy twerp tried to intimidate me (lol)!

I went here before years back when it was the Caterham Arms and even then it was renowned for being a scumhole and it was so I never went back and now about 8 years later I thought I would give it another chance and go back in there since it had been refurbished but foolish me. The place is intimidating. Its full of aggression from the regulars and am told by someone who lives near the place that they routinely have punchups which the police are sometimes called which does not surprise me in the least. The staff have some attitude too I guess its the only way they would fit in working there but in fairness they do serve a good pint.

A pub is only really as good as the people who go there and its safe to say these sorry losers will probably be going to this dump for the rest of their lives! AVOID.

Not long from the bulldozers and conversion to housing like some other Caterham locals., closed sometimes on passing.
Apparently up for sale. Only busy late at night but closed to general public as private parties seem to be the norm at weekends.
and no good food seems to be available. Had a pint there the other day and was good but limited menu.

KIlling time so went in. It was 7pm on a Saturday and there were two customers at the bar and several unoccupied acres. The restaurant area was in darkness and clearly closed. There was no real ale just keg John Smiths. The girl behind the bar and the two locals were pleasant and friendly but that didn't make up for the fact the this large pub was deserted, cold and smelt stale. The toilets clearly hadn't see any sort of cleaning for weeks, the smell of pee was overwhelming. The upside being that the nasty smell in the rest of the pub was a breath of fresh air by comparison. We had our one drink and left never to return.

totally agree with brightboy,Greenpilgrim and blobsplat.had to go to this awful vile pub for a function, will NEVER return.
no proper beers,no alcohol-free beer,
"scruffy chav type staff" is being generous.
avoid at all cost unless you're making a documentary about what is wrong with England in the 21st century.
thor_steinar - 10 Oct 2010 18:15
Full of kids who want to fight each other after a couple of beers.
brightboy - 26 Jun 2010 08:15
I totally concur with bobsplat
Greenpilgrim - 26 May 2010 11:27
Popped in the other lunch time ! Stank of stale cooking oil, no real beer, scruffy chav type staff, scruffy furniture ! No way forward, this is still a chav/pikey/ex squaddie boozer :~(
It'll never change, not enough folks in the area, that'll stay in the area for this sort of boozer, for that is what it is, a scruffy lowlife folks boozer :~(

I cannot believe Triedandtested is talkng about the same pub that I have become familier with over the last few months. Since first going there about six months ago, my family and I have been back many, many times. The food and service are excellent with a great range of wines, and an expansive menu with something to suit everyone. To top it all, we always find the bill very reasonable, which explains why we go back time and time again. I suggest Triedandtested "tries" again.
triedandsatisfied - 9 Oct 2008 11:36
Very disappointing and overpriced. Not my idea of a "Gastro pub".

This place is a huge improvement on it's previous incarnation. Anyone who ventured in there when it was the Caterham Arms and promised never to return should give it another go as it has change enormously.

Gone are the tv screens, dowdy furniture and sticky carpet and in is a contemporary decor with leather sofas and wooden flooring. They now operate a very good restaurant, with a small but interesting menu. The night I ate there the quality was very good which makes this a good addition to "The Hill" which lacks anywhere decent to eat (apart from the Indian in the High St.). The beer selection has also improved with the addition of a couple of real ales - London Pride and Speckled Hen - with the intention to extend the range in the near future. Added to this is a reasonable range of fizz and a good wine list, all of which are available by the glass. Staff are friendly and the music is good if not sometimes a little loud. All in all well worth a visit.
