A charming traditional pub overlooking the green. The cosy rooms have been knocked through but not completely, so there is still a sense of separate spaces while creating a light airy feel. It's a Greene King pub so there's Abbott, Hen and IPA, but there's also a guest - Hooky on my visit, which was fresh and cool. A decent little pub with a mixed clientèle.

I had lunch here last Saturday and it was ok - the locals do stare at you but I guess it's because I've got two heads. Too many fag ends at the front door and the greenery needs replacing.

Small Greene King tied house with a traditional interior and views over the nearby cricket pitch.Four handpumps serving Bury St Edmunds brewed Morland Original,Ruddles County,Abbott and GK IPA which was clear ,crisp , tasted fine and good value at 2.60.The food offering is standard pub grub with mains around the 7-8 mark and the musak was not intrusive. It doesnt take many customers in here for the pub to seem busy and the bar sevice is friendly and welcoming.

Had to leave the Blackbirds saturday night and move down here, not my favourite pub but at least it will do till they get cleaned up at the birds. Was packed here this saturday and the atmosphere was fantastic. Got served quick enough, usual D**k hds but then alot of strange faces too because of the fair. Great view of the fire works and lots to see going on. The moor was packed too. This was my favourite this time.. watch this space

Just moved here recently, lovely area except for the racist scum that seem to be everywhere...
Can't disagree with the other comments appart from the fact that it seemd the people that drink in the pub, sorry to all you non offenders but alot of the guys that drink here are "stuck up thier own" if you know what I mean.Staff nice and lovely pub but too clicky for my liking, saying that I will go in again..

I've lived in Hemel for 15 years and whenever I've frequented the pub it's been a pint of the goiod stuff all round. Steam Me Up Big Boy. Steamsville United. Steamer Express. Steammeister Generelle. Etc. Biggy Smalls.

The people leaving negative messages about the steam coach must be getting confused with a different pub. The Steam Coach is the best pub in Hemel. The Staff are lovely, the govener is wicked and the beer an food are all of excellent quality. My family and I have always been made to feel extremely welcome, we'll always drink here and highly recommend this pub!!!

This pub is the best one in Hemel. Its not full of idiots who want to go out to get battered and have a fight. The beer, atmosphere, music, food, barmaids and landlord are all top notch. Those people who have put negative comments recently have obviously got a grudge, (didn't you get an invite to the Fancy dress party, ah bless!) but funnily enough I'm sure they may have been in there for either Christmas Eve or New Years Eve ! Hypocrites ! If you want somewhere that's busy on a Friday, get down there.

Something must be going wrong at this pub for so much banter to take place! I was raised in Boxmoor and always knew this pub as a friendly place, what has changed? I used it a couple of months ago and found the atmosphere to be slightly allien to non regulars the beer was reasonable but one pint was enough and I moved to a pub up the road.

Just read the reviews and can't believe how negative some of them are. I use this pub on occasions and have always found the beer and food to be good and the service excellent. In fact I'm off there for a spot of lunch.

Is it a coincidence that the negative stuff is posted anonymously, why don't you guys or girls use an alias then at least it would be obvious if you where one person or several.

Hey Guys and Girls .. reading this , would seam like you really have it in for this pub , its landlord and the landlady ...

As far as catering for all ages , i think its better going in to an over 21's pub because there is less childish behaviour and piss artists causing trouble . and 'kids' screaming and 18-21's pukeing everywhere .

As far as a flat pint , i have never had one in there (maybe you should say) . and the pub food is presentable and much cheaper than quite a few of the neighbouring pubs & seams to be quite prompt in being served .

But this site if for personal opinions i suppose , Each for thier own . but i do think that this page seams to be very bitchy . and some of you are acting like real children .

you say this pub was marvelous a year ago . maybe the landlord / landlady need some feed back to maintain their standards to how you think they should be .

things change by people saying things . NOT by slagging them off on an internet page ...ttfn ...

The only pub in Hemel with good atmosphere, complete safety, excellent service and friendly locals. Beer's not bad either!

Great food, staff all welcoming, landlady bit fearce but at closing thats usually required. Landlord can be bit stressed with staff which not always what u want to see but generally he is nice and accomodating...

All events are great and the fundraiser with the netball girls was a scream.

Definitely recommend this pub day or night

bonniemops - 17 Nov 2006 11:48
The Steamer offers good grub, a variety of lagers and ales and the beer is never flat. The pub caters for all age groups and definatley has some fit women on a weekend. The bar staff are sound along with the locals.

A day or night (or both) in The Steam Coach is not to be missed, infact i'm off down there now !!!

This pub is 10 out of 10 plus another 4

New to this area and started drinking here few months ago. Pub has very inviting staff friendly and efficient. Good food and very large portions during the day and friday nights is out of this world. Got to be the best place in Hemel by far. Never had a flat pint and am sure staff would be very accomodating if there was a problem. 10 out of 10

I have been in to **The Steam Coach ** quite a few times recently . And have had some very pleasent Evenings in there . I think they had a good menu for a local pub , and compared to so many pubs in the area i think its reasonably priced . i have never had a flat pint in there . the staff always seam polite and have always made me feel welcome , i normally go in there with a group of friends .they play decent music that caters for eveybodys taste . most of the pubs i have been in to in hemel seam to have trouble with rowdy guys picking fights , but in the steam coach i have never seen any trouble . i do reccomend it to my friends , and will continue having some great nights in there ..................
pimmsy - 16 Nov 2006 22:36
good little boozer with great staff apart from the landlady, who, in these days of more relaxed licensing laws needs to chill out a touch at chucking out time. A nice pint of fosters served though

Great atmosphere and decor. Food is great, real ales are superb. Staff are really friendly, shame to see Sue has left, great for a laugh. Quiz on Weds, brilliant selection of music for the weekends, get there early this pub gets packed Friday and Sat nights.

Following the comments on the site, decided to visit it this lunchtime. Much bigger than I expected - very much geared towards lunchtime trade; tables everywhere. Unfortunately, a large group had the foresight to pre-book a load of tables (and presumably their food too), just after we got there. This meant we had to wait over 30 mins for our food! Might have been a one-off, will give it another go (or book next time!) Probably a good pub in the evenings.
