Lovely pub !!!

It's a "ye olde worlde" oak beamed pub, allowing great views over the countryside.

3-4 real ales, including Maldon Gold and Old Bob. A varied lunch menu - the food was excellent.

Previous posters have refered to the friendly, helpful attitude of the staff, and this is so true. But what made my stay was Siobhan. Every pub should have a Siobhan. Her sales and serving skills were a joy ; really made us feel at home.

We enjoyed our time at the Bell and will certainly revisit.

Friendly village pub not far from Maldon. My very brief directions from Colchester led me wrong so perhaps I should invest in a sat nav. The pub is at the top of the village next to the church. It is a traditional village pub that dates back to the 14th century according to the GBG. The pub is beamed throughout and seems to cater for diners. Both sides of the pub have lots of seating with tables ideally suited for diners. Obviously a good way to get people to come out of the way to visit the pub. Three hand pumps with Adnams - Broadside and Bitter and Mighty Oak - Maldon Gold on my visit. 3.05 for the Maldon Gold but it tasted good. The pub was friendly and everyone seems to know each other around the bar area. All the money is taken to the old style gold cash register. Collections of brasses are around the beams and brass plates are around the walls. A grandfather clock lives near the entrance and exit.

Ample car parking is available next to the pub as unless you live within walking distance that is probably how you are going to get here. As the anonymous review (01 07 06) states you can walk from Maldon if you are pretty fit otherwise there is a bus service, but it does look rather infrequent. There are some nice walks along St Peters Way which is not far from the pub and church.

I went there with a friend last month and we agreed this was a lovely warm country pub. Too late to eat but the menu looked ok and reasonably priced. Not sure about children though. Said no children but then said ok if over 14 so guess that's it. My friend nearly went into the landlords private quarters when we left so no marks for him!

Been here twice and been disappointed twice. The beer was vinegary, the kitchen was about to close 2 pm which meant that the we could only order sandwiches and the view was obscured by undergrowth. The landlord was a little abrupt, and not at all welcoming. Not the country pub experience we wanted. Avoid.

walked from Roundbush along a very quiet country lane and The Bell is at the top of the hill, which is quite steep, but well worth it, adnams broadside was at it's very best. closing time was 2.30 but the landlord said we could carry on drinking outside on the seats where you get a lovely view. well worth a visit. hourly bus service from Maldon if you don't like walking

Great pub, really friendly. No music or TV's so conversation for once. Landlord actually seems to be interested in his customers [that's a first for me]. Don't be put off by the fact that everyone knows each other, you'll be chatting to them in no time.

Stick to All Bar One Kathy, this is not your place. I've just dropped in by chance, had a good lunch and a couple of perfect pints of Adnams. Friendly Landlord, perfect location, no Bullshit.

Went there with a friend who I'd been raving about this place to. Very disappointed. The lunchtime food was uninteresting and the place looked a bit tired. Shame - great view

A superb traditional independently-run country pub at the top of a hill offering panoramic views across the neighbouring countryside. A real fireplace in the lounge bar. Ridleys and Adnams appear in excellent condition here, and an occasional guest is also available. Keen observers will note the orange and chocolate-brown carpet matches that used by the Classic Cinema group in the 70s. A quiet pub, all you will hear is conversation! Food available lunchtimes. A wealth of country magazines is available for the lone visitor. Walkers may bring their dog provided it's reasonably well-behaved. A more recent extension, but in the same style, to the rear of the pub doesn't quite form a snug but does offer a more private atmosphere. This is a gem, don't miss it if you are in the area!
