It recently reverted to its original name, The Six Bells, before closing for a while. It has now re-opened as Le Papillon, a French bar and restaurant and is now longer a pub. The decor is swish, the menu fish-centred and the pool table etc are gone. C'est la vie et vive la difference!

Nobody's commented on this pub very much. Hardly surprising as nobody goes in this pub very much. Indeed many have wondered how it still keeps going, as it is invariably empty when it bothers to trade at all; other times it remains closed and dark when other pubs are open. Now that the Bull and Bush on the Cambridge Road estate has closed down, possibly this pub and the Bricklayers will get an influx of people from the estate, but without this I can't see how it can survive on a handful of customers, appallingly bad beer (do they not realise it's off; badly off?) - which is a shame as it is a nice building and they have been known to have live music including jazz. A little band called Sunday's Child played there regularly in recent years, and recent refurbs have done away with the odd purple paint and given the place a small outside area to the side. Years ago it had much more character but it has unfortunately been refurbed in between times, to strip out much of what was there. Curiously the incumbents then were the mum and dad of the guvnor of one of the nearby pubs at the moment.

Great pub, fantastic food and the landlord is tasty too!

Dodgy cheap food pulls in punters but not my kind of place at all. Beer is not a strong point.

I went in here expecting it to be great, however i was disappointed. The bar man ignored me completly when i was the only one at the bar and when i group of men wlaked in he served them immediatly, they eventually had to ask him to serve me as he appeared to go deaf whenever i tried to get his attention. The place was empty and although the food was good and very cheap, won't bother going back.

Never been on one of these sites before and was looking for somewhere to eat tonite and came across this site!! Its a great idea for a website i must say and gives desciptive accounts on each pub. I must admitt that i do love to go to the odd pub here and they'e mainly in wimbledun and occasionaly in kingston.. however just last week i vistied the honest cabbage after hearing one of my friends rant on about how great the new meals were here! She told me that meals here are an unbleievble 1.95!!!! Great for a young student like me who luvs a nite out ! So i though it wuld b great to check it out ! I went along to the local live music thing and it was really nice, not at all wat i was expectin! I had a nice curry which was one of da best id had in a long time! My friend had a chilli which she praised highli!
Anyway, might nip along there tonight again.
Especially after all the other reviews posted about it ! It seems like its gonna be greattt!!!

As you will realise, I like this pub.
Good food at 1.95 for a main meal from an extensive menu.

Saturday 7 February is a night you should not miss !!!.
The Portobello Jazz Band will play a full set of their own style of trad and Manhattan style music. A seven piece outfit who served their time as musicians and boy does it show. They played on Saturday 17 Jan. everybody enjoyed it. Brilliant well done lads!.
FREE ADMISSION so get ther early if you want a seat
Bilbo1 - 20 Jan 2009 12:33
Its been a while since I have been here.
They are doing food, main courses for under 2.
Dont expect gourmet cuisine but this is fantastic value for money with all food freshly cooked by a good chef and generous portions.

They are doing excellant music nights ranging through Karaoke, Jazz, Open mic and Jazz nights.
Well worth a visit.

Went into Honest Cabbage recently and really enjoyed the open mike! I am part of a duo and the atmosphere was really great!
I would really recommend this place.
Lovely place to go to for a drink!
wine101 - 24 Aug 2008 14:32
Not bad pub good pint off Bombardier and London Pride rather enjoud thur night live music . Plesant suprise
pint11 - 18 Aug 2008 22:22
Niksic keeps commenting on this place but he is actually the manager, as a previous comment makes clear.
beeronaut - 6 Jul 2008 22:39
excellent
niksic - 6 Jul 2008 19:59
Cosier would be good, and food as well - at the moment it is very quiet, so much so I wonder how it keeps going. It has to contend with the Tup at the other end of the road which is where all the locals (well, the over-21s anyhow) go at present it seems. Good luck to it though and fair dos, and yes the female staff are very nice.
rainlight - 27 Apr 2008 20:19
Very quiet, no grub, limited beer range.
loveleedshatebates - 27 Apr 2008 09:05
went to the honest cabbage the other night :::looked good.i was told they are going to put great food back on the menu and make the whole place cosier! sounds good to me!its not changing hands apparently: good...had some nice barmaids!
Im all for the great british pub and food!
good music was played and I hear they are starting Quiz nites...50 quid prize!!
niksic - 25 Apr 2008 15:20
Now hosting the karaoke from the Marlborough, as well as Japanese/Korean food in the little side bar. Ale choice is one of two (they seem to either have London Pride or Wells Bombardier) but good enough for me. Have also reinstated Kronenbourg 1664 instead of American piss water, yippee!
I am informed the pub will stay a pub even when it changes hands shortly. So they just need to find the old comfy chairs they threw out a while back, hint hint.
rainlight - 13 Mar 2008 22:35
I recently went to the Honest Cabbage to have a look at the new menu. The lady who showed us the menu was so welcoming that we found ourselves sitting at a table before we knew it and ordering!

We shared a delicious starter called Gyu Tataki - seared beef witha sesame dressing. We also ordered Chicken Yakatori as a starter - which is all about the dressing. The sweet rich soy sauce was delightful. As we're pigs we also ordered the deep fried prawn ball (wonderfully light and fluffy) as well as the crab ramen salad.

For my main I had salmon sashimi (beautiful cut) with miso soup. I also helped out with most of my parnter's main (!) the ton katsu (it came with an avocado cream that was superb).

The standard of the food was absolutely delicious - quite surprising from the look of the pub. The decor is a little at odds with the fine dining. But then it is billed as "asian food meets British pub".

It was very quiet when we went - so the atmosphere was a little lacking. Maybe it will pick up. I can't recommend the food enough.
Alternate - 11 Mar 2008 13:31
Fairly cosy little pub on a street corner near Fairfield. One ale and a few lagers and an array of whiskeys etc. Promises entertainment including music and karaoke - used to have jazz on Thursdays last year, hopefully it'll come back.
rainlight - 14 Jan 2008 21:10
Rumour has it that the Honest Cabbage is due for a change of ownership and a major shift in direction in the new year. Hopefully it will stay a pub.
beeronaut - 4 Dec 2007 12:58
Very much traditional pub . locals students mix love this place
niksic - 1 Dec 2007 19:49
Much improved recently in my opinion and they seem to have taken note of comments on this site. The beer has been improved (Wells Bombardier and Youngs Bitter), the layout also, and the pool table has been reinstated. Plus jazz on a Thursday night.
beeronaut - 18 Nov 2007 08:23
Good place to take a leak, although may be more second than first date territory.
kmcs - 7 Jun 2007 11:52
Not bad pub, visited this weekend, fairly busy, bitter on tap very good! Thai food seems very busy. Ido like this place and i definetly reccomend this to everyone.
niksic - 11 Mar 2007 20:08
Visited this place the other weekend during a football match which only a handfull of people seemed to be watching on the two large screens.

Greene King IPA (not to my taste) is the only cask beer on sale and I saw precisely one person drinking it! Not a bad place but lacks atmosphere and character like a lot of places do these days. Handy for other backstreet boozers around there including The Albion, the Brickies and the Marlborough (formerly The Refectory).
anonymous - 28 Feb 2007 12:04
'Good beer' and this place are a contradiction in terms. The best thing that could happen to this pub would be if it got a really good landlord. Second to that, if it were to burn down.
anonymous - 22 Feb 2007 00:17
It is now the Honest Cabbage. Why it is listed here under its old name I dont know. I found the staff to excellent serving good beer which could easily be a little bit cheaper.
The New Years eve party was brilliant and featured "Okey Dokey" Karaoke wehich is easily the best karaoke presentation in the area.
Darko is certainly the tallest manager in the area.
See you in there

Bilbo1 - 18 Jan 2007 10:28
Well, it was busy last night too and a good time was had by all. Item '2' on the list of 26 August can be ticked off - IPA now OK, though one of the barmaids insisted there wasn't any (not just that it had run out, that there wasn't any at all). Me: what am i drinking then?
beeronaut - 14 Jan 2007 11:18
Not bad place . no food at any time . fri night busy with live music very busy pleasant pub for drink !
anonymous - 1 Jan 2007 21:42
Always used to be one of my favourite Kingston Pubs, especially when Warsteiner and Becks were on draft.

Not such a good selection of beers these days, but must admit I haven't noticed too much of the "chav" element on recent visits. Agree about the bizarre name being a bit naff, but still a pleasant stop-off on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Please bring back the decent lagers though!
mr_pilsener - 4 Dec 2006 08:46
The pool table is now back but the IPA tastes funny. Consistently. It's always the same bad taste, too, which suggests there is something wrong in the cellar.
anonymous - 8 Oct 2006 10:49
I agree with all the comments below, its really not as bad as people make out! Beer does need sorting, its pretty grim.

"....no matter what you do to the place it will still be used by some of the dodgiest people in kingston...."!!! Do me a favour! If you are intimidated by the people who use this pub then you must have had a very sheltered up-bringing! This is Kingston-upon-Thames! IN SURREY!!! You really don't get that many dodgy people in here.
anonymous - 2 Sep 2006 13:35
OK, on the upside:
- The pub now looks a lot smarter and fencing off the outside area was a good idea.
- There is a good range of whiskies.
- The staff have a cheerful attitude and are pleasant.

And here are some suggestions:
- Reinstate the pool table, possibly in the side bar. It was a social focus for a number of people, who now presumably go elsewhere.
- Improve the quality of the IPA. It may already have improved, I don't know.
- Reinstate Kronenbourg 1664 instead of American pisswater a.k.a. Budweiser.
- Put in some more comfortable seating. This isn't a restaurant, it's a pub.
- And most of all give it back its real name! It is the Six Bells. Not the "Honest Cabbage".
anonymous - 26 Aug 2006 11:59
I'm not sure whether you quite understood where i was heading mate,I can assure you i am no chav but I certainly know where to look to find them. Its pleasing you have finally barred some of the idiots that frequent your establishment, but as witnessed recently you still dont get the point. The place is certainly a better looking pub(although the name ranks up there with the worst pub names of all time) but i'm sorry you still have some of the most dodgy looking people sitting on your outside tables, something you will never get rid of i guess. What i meant when i said "you cant polish a turd" my friend,is,you are in an unenviable position that no matter what you do to the place it will still be used by some of the dodgiest people in kingston and that point alone will keep people like me away because we are just not intereted in sharing a pub with these scary freaks.i would suggest calling it "the blue oyster bar" maybe, that will turn most of the chavvos away.
good luck
anonymous - 8 Aug 2006 07:09
hi this is Alex from The Honest Cabbage. Thankyou all of those who have been barred, I enjoyed your "chav" comments hugely! The pub is doing better than ever before even without your prestigious custom! Please stay away and keep the childish comments coming. We are having no complaints from old and new customers who are enjoying the new style Honest Cabbage.
niksic - 7 Aug 2006 14:10
you all know that this place will never lose its stigma or the debris that frequent it every day.its a chav magnet and it always has been.
one saying best decribes the new facelift-"you cant polish a turd"
anonymous - 26 Jul 2006 15:29
Amazingly this place is actually getting worse ... undrinkable IPA instead of London Pride, and they've replaced Kronenbourg (about the only generic lager I'll actually drink) with American Budweiser, aka pisswater. I've also heard that house prices in the street are forced down by the proximity of this pub.
beeronaut - 23 Jul 2006 23:16
i tried to pop in for a pint a couple of days ago and was put off by the sea of drunk 15 year old chavs fighting inside and outside of the pub. finaly made it in yesterday for a crap pint and over priced average food. i don't think i'll go back
toby1 - 15 Jul 2006 21:49
Dear oh dear.
Vague attempt to smarten it up, still full of chavs and pikeys.

Daft name (honest cabbage !??!?!) now too.

anonymous - 21 Jun 2006 14:15
went there now HONEST CABAGGE what a name . heard that ex lanlord from cricketers is now here . lots of plans for this place lets hope its gona be good pub . i know lanlord litle bit crazy but ok . staff are pretty fit ( girls (
anonymous - 11 Jun 2006 19:54
It's the 'Honest Cabbage'. The interior hasn't been changed but apparently will be soon and they intend to get a second real ale on also.
beeronaut - 31 May 2006 13:47
Couldn't quite make it out from a bus but now renamed the 'Lucky Cabbage' or someat like that. Oh Pleeasseee get a life you pub naming tosser's !
