This should be a top real ale pub but it isn't. It's dark and quirky and down a back street, and one's immediate impression is that it's full of character, but actually it's tired and badly in need of some love and attention. Two hand pumps - but the GK IPA was off and I had to return my pint of Southwold bitter. It was replaced after a grumble from the lad behind the bar, but the replacement also had a sour after-taste. At least it was a bit cooler. I got the impression it was the first pint they had pulled that day - and it was 10.00 pm on a Saturday evening. There were a few listless customers, but it was quiet. Paper was peeling off the ceiling.

Nearly died from thirst and exhaustion trying to find this boozer. On foot, there is quite a steep hill to climb, turn left and there it is - right at the other end.
I had left the missus shopping while I tried to find somewhere to eat and drink for lunch.
Breathlessly I asked the young lad behind the bar if food was being served? He looked around the seating and table areas (there were only him and me in the place) and replied "It doesn't look like it". What a waste of time and effort that was.
Oh well, at least the shops are downhill.

Lovely out of the way and unspoilt public house. Serves 3 good quality real ales.Although in Bishops Stortford not a Greene King pub.[ hurrah]
Survived a recent attempt by dvelopers to undermine it by trying to get permission to build flats on its car park.well worth hunting out and supporting, one of Stortfords hidden gems.

Still open, the Council has refused planning permission for the developer to build flats on the large car park at the rear of the pub.

Greene King pub tucked away from the town centre. IPA and Speckled hen the regulars. Occasional Guest.

Old fashioned decor, has a certain nostalgic quality to the place.

Food served but I've never tried it. Small selection of books and games available. Beer garden, juke box (staff will turn up/down if requested), car park to the rear. Dartboard and darts for sale.

Never that busy, and it's supposedly closing down soon. Shame to see Stortford lose another pub.

Fantastic Boozer. It's a crying shame it's closing down. I used to buy flights for my darts there and loved drinking in the Beer Garden in Summer.

Can't speak for recent times - but this was one of Stortford's greatest ever pubs - hot cross buns above the bar, Castle Dart (sic) club, old school landlord and landlady, beige vinyl seating. Save the Castle!

Went back for old times sake as I heard it was due to close. I asked the bar staff and she said that it was closing in October. Thankfully they have 2 real ales back on again.
I never could understand how this pub made any money as it was never busy and normally the number of staff (all of whom seem to be related to the landlord) would outnumber the customers. Even so it will be a shame to lose yet another pub in this town.

Someone sent me a message after my previous comment about this pub - how do I reply to him including the text of his message?

Traditional pub with cask ale and the usual lagers and bitters on tap. Very old-fashioned interior with a selection of board games, has a certain nostalgic charm about it. Beer garden and free parking to the rear of the pub. Often smokey inside although all-change on July 1st!

HOWEVER.

I too noticed the name of the pub on the ballot paper this year next to the BNP. I've never experienced any offensive behaviour or racist or fascist conversation myself, however if it is true that this pub is a BNP meeting place, then i shall be certain to take my custom elsewhere. Racism shouldn't be tolerated in any pub, just as it shouldn't be tolerated anywhere else in the world.

This pub has become a racist haunt - it was the headquarters for the recent BNP election attempt in this town, thankfully unsuccesful.
Also the beer is crap and the bar staff still smoke behind the bar.
Shame really as this used to be my favorite pub (it was me added it to this site) but I wouldn't go there any more.

back street pub that's hard to find unless you already know where it is! Stuck in a time warp with 1950s decor, and the grumpiest landlord in the world. Don't be put off though, decent beer with choice of real ales, friendly atmosphere (no trouble here) and pleasant beer garden. large car park.
