user reviews of Ivory, Hitchin

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Lokks like an old theatre from the outside. inside it's a kids' bar with no real ale and horrible loud music. For some reason the door of the gents had been propped open so everyone could get a view of the cubicles. Not good. At least it was fairly cheap.

Disgusting little dive, like a small sweat box with no character or service whatsoever, toilets not tended to and the measures are weak, Avoid if you want a good night out!

Good night out in here, way better than any of the other late night venues in Hitchin. As has also been mentioned it's a good place to watch sport as well, most football game shown in 3D (as well as standard). Thumbs up to this bar.

I noticed they sell Havana Club Rum - I am not a rum drinker but it is nice to see Cuban rum alcohol on sale - Vive la revolucion!

This is a bar, not a pub, and that distinction should be clearly in your mind before visiting. This is not one for real ale fans. The choice of spirits is excellent and you can get a decent bottle of wine nicely priced. The staff are always friendly and efficient and Sunday evenings are good with live acoustic music and free nibbles available all night. It is also good for watching football as they have table service with pitchers of lager available. I wouldn't go there on a Friday or Saturday night though as it is definitely pitched at a younger crowd. No worse for all that though...it is horses for courses and sometimes this place is perfect for what you want.

Hmmm 5 reviews from an anonymous reviewer all made within a 30 minute period. Staff perhaps?

There seem to be two conflicting schools of thought towrds poor old Ivory! Bit like marmite u either seem to love it or hate it!

Music 7/10
Service 8/10
Atmosphere 10/10
Q 4/10 (place cant help being popular tho i guess, u couldnt physically squeeze anymore bar staff behind that bar! so least their trying)

In my opinion the place rocks, n put quite simply you will enjoy it if your not a chav or only just turned 18! its deffo a 20's/30's kinda place!

Great night out, dont listen to the chav's! yeah you still Q, what u expect its the most popular place in town! thats gotta say sumit! But the service, music n atmosphere are easily still the best in Hitchin! Any of the previous reviewers actually been to the Corn or Bar Ab for example? Least u actually get served and get the right drink in Ivory! Top marks

WHERE ARE THE MANAGERS WHEN YOU NEED THEM?
Have needed to make complaints on 2 occasions but I am constantly being told by rude staff that thay are unavailable...Errrm WTF?
anonymous - 14 May 2007 21:29
Well,I have to say...What has happened to this place. I used to really enjoy going into Ivory but now I am starting to get a bit annoyed with the service.
On most occasions I am served politly by a staff member but recently the length of time it takes to be served is beyond belief. What is most annoying is the fact that a load of staff are standing gassing at one end while punters are waiting - this goes on every week. After queing for 5 hours to in,then being squashed to death on the over croweded dance floor how long can it take to get a drink... Sort this out please!

Good venue for watching football, but as others have said a bit more expensive for booze (well you have to pay for those 'free' table-snacks/dorito's somehow!).

Had an experience which makes me think this pub is a little bit up it's own behind.

If you wear a hoodie, watch out for a stupid policy in this pub. Went to watch the football the other day and as was cold was wearing a hooded top below my jacket. Upon entering, was asked by bar staff whether I minded tucking in my hood, or removing my top. Said I didn't, but asked why? Was told 'it's our policy'. Suggested they might like to put up signs to this effect... (perhaps I should have suggested they distribute free copies of the Sun / Daily Mail with their free bar snacks) Anyway, promptly put my top back on after noticing at least 4 others in the pub still wearing their hoodies.

a half busy venue with all the people up there own arse's (including the staff)just not our cup of tea.

music boring !!!!!!!!!!! always

too much attitude for all the people i know

party_lady - 18 Jan 2007 17:11
Usually pop in for a drink on the way to the corn exchange and it is just for one !!!!!!!! the other saturday the corn was full so we came here ... never again the drinks are so expensive and the music is shocking. i think the dj must still have the same cd wallet that he found 10 years ago. the decor is ok but thats it im afraid .... sorry the ivory but you need a shake up
hitchin_boys - 18 Jan 2007 14:15
No Sorry, thumbs down! Over priced, but I guess that to help pay for the 6ft glitter ball. The place can hold about 200 people but there's only enough seating for about 20. It's all open plan so if you do happen to strike up a conversation with a member of the opposite sex theres no where really to carry it further, outside maybe but then it gets so crowded that if you want another drink you have to queue up to get back in. Nice and clean looks up market and new, but why so much for a pint.

This bar opened Christmas 2005 and it seems perfect for Hitchin - upmarket, but not out of reach, smart but not too classy, just like the town itself really. THE place to be these days, the que reaches right down the road at weekends, Saturday in particular is packed as its open till 2am. Great music and large selection of drinks, would have given it 10/10 but loose a point for not selling Magners! WTF?
