Nice to go to a proper pub and be able to have a good old catch up with people without a load of foody nonsense or crappy music

Now that the despicable Dell has left this pub to waste more of his mother's money on ill-advised schemes, the regulars can return to the cosy, friendly hostelry they know and love. After being left in a proper shambles by the afore-mentioned harbinger of doom (including a starving cat trapped upstairs) the pub is being slowly re-established as a lovely place to meet friends and lose hours whilst enjoying well kept beers and a surprisingly broad range of whiskeys. All it needs now is a labrador asleep by the fire and it will be perfect.

Not as scary as some pubs guest ale. To be frank not the best pub, but alright. Beers are kept well.

A bit better than most pubs nearby but not good enough to make a special trip.

One of the more traditional pubs in the town centre, and slightly off the beaten track. The food selection looked good (and all available till 9pm) but wasn't tried. Nice range of ales and friendly staff/customers. The toilet, though, left a lot to be desired: an open toilet, across the back yard, that reminded me of school in the sixties!

more traditionally a pub than some of the nearby establishments as it is just far enough from the 'top of town' not to have gone the whole way down the bland modernizing path. Two bars which were originally Public and Saloon and still retain a little of that atmosphere, also a reasonable beer garden. 3 pumps selling Deuchars, Abbott and Old Hooky, a range that is a little overbalanced towards the strong side. Perfectly acceptable condition but not outstanding, typically for these lacklustre brews. Plastic vine leaves and fairy light decor in the ex saloon. Looks popular with the 25-35 age group.

good real ale & friendly service, a nice change from the many up market bars in the centre of town, could do with a bit of a clean up though.

Stumbled in on Saturday evening after a curry up the road and encountered what seemed to be a decent stab at a yoof disco (unless the place was holding a private function, the average age of the punters was about 22).

Anyways, 3 GK ales, my Speckled Hen was fairly good. Atmosphere noisy but not rowdy.

If this is the regular Saturday evening entertainment, it might well be worth a visit if you're under 35. Certainly better than the town centre anyway.

Not been in here for a while as it changed management. Prior to this was a great pub with even greater food. Used to eat here regularly Decor was a bit garish. Pink wall with a silver blind. Yuk ! Used to have a jamming night which was good think it has stopped now.

would like to tell you about the beer in this pub but after walking in one week day afternoon I stood at the bar for 5 minutes with not a single soul in sight - including any bar staff. Gave up and left thirsty. Pub looked quaint enough though.

Is it still the same landlord, Mr happy?

The last couple of pints I've tried here have disappointed. The Deuchar's IPA has been lacking in condition on each occasion and I am now reluctant to return. This is a lovely little pub in a town that is so full of keg barns that cater for the sportshirt crowd. It is disappointing that it is losing its attraction for me because of some poor beer.

Great pub, interesting locals and friendly, good bar staff, a pub thats kept a good character, and it is a pub unlike the various bars sprouting up around the top of town.

Nice small interesting pub, makes a GREAT change from usual chain pubs nearby. Found my chicken / pesto ciabbata lunch tasty & good value, good choice of beers too. Well done to whoever runs it.

Interestingish atmosphere. The jukebox didnt seem to easy to get to work. Makes it a more interesting an experience if you shout 'ck jeans' when leaving the pub. thats if you are not too embarassed to do so

I pop in to the Bounty from time to time and it's amazing how a change of licensee can completely turn round a pub's fortunes. On my last visit there was a combined quiz/draw with a 600 top prize (which some lucky bugger won!). The place was heaving but we were served within a couple of minutes. Ale was very good quality, the atmosphere warm and friendly. I hear the food is outstanding but haven't tried it yet. Definitely one I would recommend to anyone looking for one of the very few traditional pubs left in Basingstoke.

Went back there a couple of times, met the new owner who was very pleasent to talk to, overall i'm impressed! Much better than it was this time last year and I'd recommend it. Cheers!

Well the Bounty is my new home now the George has shut. Good music and not to loud so you can actually have a conversation and hear one another! Serves good ales... Courage best...beautiful! Very small inside, but you cant have everything, I like it.. Teenie boppers stick to the Litten!

It does not say much, but from my experience of Basdingstoke town centre pubs this is the best. The beer (real ale) is good, the staff good and friendly. It would never make it in Manchester as a qulality ale house but this is Basingstoke.

I have heard about the change of owner and haven't tried it ou yet, but I have been informed that it is a great improvement
Alexh1982 - 7 Aug 2004 16:44
Under new ownership. That awful paintwork gone-what did they think they were doing ?

I'm afraid there isn't much going for this pub. A small claustophobic place with an outside ladies toilet and one bar decorated in purpe with dark lights and the other like a 1940s' throwback which is all brown and horrible. Not very welcoming, the only time the landlord spoke to me and my mate was to tell us to mind our language, when we were just speaking normally and we were the only two punters in the whole pub.
Alexh1982 - 15 Nov 2003 09:25
Next to the cricket ground where Hampshire occasionally condescend to play when they can tear themselves away from the pretentiously named Rose Bowl.
