Walked past the other day. Looked okay - will give it another try next week and will report back. I try and avoid the 'closed mind' so will give it a whirl.

Pip, let's see...

It is having a refurb.
Outside and inn.
Let's hope that unlike the Norweigan blue that.
It emerges from its chrysallis and.
Is alive and is new in decor, demeanour and custom.

I've used Beer In The Evening a few times to find out good pubs to go to - but never thought to join up until visiting THIS pub. Because I just HAD to make a comment!
On entering, my Chinese wife was pounced upon by the Oriental barmaid. "Are you Thai? Are you Fillipino? Are you Malaysian?" No, I am Chinese. YOU CANNOT BELIEVE THE RACIST DISGUST LOOK that came from the barmaid! STRIKE ONE! Next: the beer - ALL ale was GONE! ALL Strongbow was GONE! What few choices remained were WELL OVERPRICED. Over 3.00 for a pint in rural Surrey!! STRIKE TWO!
The Murphy's stout tasted disgusting. Unlike any Murphy's bought anywhere else. I asked to change it for a Fosters. I got LOOKS OF HATE and no refund at all over the price difference. STRIKE THREE!
NEVER EVER GO TO THIS PUB! IT SUCKS! I certainly never ever will ever again!

If, "...jewel..", equals, "crap", then, yes, this pub is a jewel. Otherwise, its a dump. Sadly.

This Pub is a Jewel.

Really friendly atmosphere, easy going locals - it's a nice place to read the paper, catch up with friends and surf the net or just chill.
Also being a ale lover, I'm always surprised and happy to know there'll be something new on the tap.
I've noticed some unfriendly reviews, in particular by DAVE BROOK/JANINE HAMPSHIRE (obviously the same person). I don't know where they're coming from, as i have never seen the things they have described in the pub, in fact, it's because the pub doesn't have those problems i think i'm becoming a regular. Sound's like that reviewer has some issue with the landlord, maybe a CRUSH since they mention his name so much! Not a real surprise as he is a jolly guy.
It's really nice to see a local surviving current economic times, with loyal and friendly regulars for anyone passing by.

Good mixture of ages and groups as well a a healthy flow of passers by.
Friendly bar staff and management, top class food from the Thai chef.

Juke Box, Flatscreen Sports TVs, Quiz Nights-9pm on a Sunday, Beer Garden, Sofas, WIFI Internet Access, good selection of drinks including Ales and a Budget Hotel.

I have drinking in the Kenley on and off for a few years now. Apart from the occasional Friday or Saturday night it remains a nice place to relax, catch up with mates, or just read he paper. It has a good atmosphere and easy going locals.

The Pub itself is a Victorian Antique, lots of the original features are visible. In particular the mirrored bar which was destined for the Titanic.

We - my partner and I have been drinking in the Kenley for many years my partner for about 30yrs, me about 11 yrs, we have seen landlords come and go. Chris is a nice guy and when he is not knackered he works really hard and is a fantastic landlord, he has made many friends and keeps his customers happy -

Since the no smoking ban it has been difficult for those members of the staff who smoke, as they have to keep popping out for a fag thus leaving the bar with no one serving!! quite annoying when you are gagging for a pint !!

We are part of the 4 - 8 drinking group who reside at the left hand side of the bar. A lot of our friends have kids who make up the 18 + group, they are not a problem just a little high spirited and look at chris as a role model lol !!

The food in the kenley is excellent with Eid the Thai Chef who guardes her honey with a will of iron ( all regulars at the kenley will understand that ) makes the most wonderfull meals and can turn out a very buffett for special occasions such as birthdays and funnerals.

The Kenley Hotel is a meeting place for many diverse groups of people who all manage to mix together well.

As for the people that come to stay over at the hotel part of the pub are usualy workman of different trades who always seem to have a good time and keep coming back for more.

I have it on good authority that the rooms and bathrooms are sometimes left in the most disgusting states by the workmen that use them, the cleaner really does their best to keep it as nice as possible and i think for 20 a night people really should not moan as there is a travel lodge just up the road if they prefer better.

The Kenley Hotel offers a good meal, good company, great food, and a cheap place to lay your head if you feel uncomfortable with any activities within the pub you can always go else where.

Remains truly horrible. The previous reviewer's comments are really depressing. If people are sleeping in the bar then the place's insurance will be invalid - a fire, no cover, a frightening prospect. Brewery/owners/police need to take a look.

I regulary stay at the kenley in one of the rented rooms, due to my work I have stayed here many times over the years, mainly because its cheap. This being one of or only a positive.

Will start with positives: 1.since makeover no more sticky carpet, however please sack the cleaner.
2.If you live local its a short walk for a pint.

Negatives: Over the recent months the clientale has become far younger, bringing down the friendly comfortable atmosphere, personally I have noticed that the youth,s have taken away my enjoyment of the pool table as this was my main/only activity and now feel intimidated by the youths.

Having resided at the Kenley, I have noticed on several occasions recently, evenings when the bar has stayed open after hours, particulary weekends, sometimes all night long into the early hours and when I have left for work the following morning have noticed clients sleeping within the bar area.

The present landlord who I know as Chris, has always been polite, friendly and very helpful, however, recently have noticed him to be flipent, ignorant (following lock ins), occasionally quite rude and obnocsious, and not always available, whereby I have had to rely on bar staff with issues I may have had.

Being that I have been a regular at the Kenley, I have noticed a huge turnover of bar staff in the past months.I can only assume this is down to the decline of the landlords attitude/relationship more so with the female clientale, and the managment of the pub .

Changes to turn this pub back to a pub rather than a youth centre would be the current landlord to place restrictions, ie. exclusion of the younger generation that being the 15/16 year olds allowed within and around the pubs premises as I have witnessed on several occasions disturbances and altercations on site.

In hope.

Positives:

It has obviously been re-decorated and looks a lot better.

Good access to tele's to watch sport

Lively people watching sport

Beers seemed ok and usual price for that area

Negatives:

I was probably 25 years older than some people in there and I am 40!!

Lack of cubicle avialability ( I think you know what I mean)

Its a shame. Has the potential to become an excellent pub - its just the regulars! I suppose you have to cater for your regulars, but in this case, I'm sure there are many people who live in the vicinity and would frequent this pub if it were just to lift its standards a little bit.
Ramone - 12 Jun 2007 13:28
This place is foul. A great big Victorian pub that could easily be excellent but the management don't care and for a (reasonably) well-heeled area the clientele are at the tatoos, UB40, power drinker, D-E end of the scale. Its odd - Kenley clearly has money but the pub is bad and the restaurants nearby equally poor. Surely there's an opportunity to exploit here?

Pip-pip!
on_the_brightside - 4 Feb 2007 19:53
Scratch through the grime and you'll find a Victorian station hotel/coaching inn under the surface. Despite many alterations a lot of original features are still visible, like the ornate carved back bar, iron pillars and fireplaces. With sympathetic management this would be a gem, however the reality is the usual sticky carpet local boozer popular with the local alkies but ignored by everyone else. Real ale in principle but it's very likely to be 'off' one way or the other.
