please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Stayed here a couple of nights and have added it to our "will come back" list.
Accommodation OK, our bathroom wasn't exactly sparkling clean so nothing special. But food superb. Beers limited in number but well looked after and reasonably priced.
Good service from pleasant staff and nice pubby atmosphere.
Recommended.

Arrived here at 2.05 one afternoon. Ordered 2 beers and proceeded to look at the menu. The barmaid watched us as we discussed what we were going to have, then walked away. We had to ring the bell to put in our order 5 mins later and I hope I didn't detect that she seemed a little pleased to tell us they had stopped serving at 2. Perhaps there was a sign and she thought we should have seen it, but I don't think it would have hurt for her to have pointed out they had stopped serving when we picked the menu up.

My mate and i stopped off here halfway through our walk.
The exmoor ales were gorgeous, we could have stayed there all day!
We sat outside which as a previous poster pointed out is limited seating but was still pleasant none the less.

9/10

Nice restaurant in a lovely picturesque village but not a pub for the serious beer drinker. The Exmoor Ale and Gold was fine (albeit a bit unadventurous) but the atmosphere on Sunday lunchtime reminded me of a chapel of rest.

Welcoming pub in quiet Exmoor village. Sadly it lacks a garden. Outside seating is limited and unattractive. Sandwiches were OK but pricey.

Good pub with decent food (particularly good roast Sunday lunch), well-kept ale (though the standard-issue dull choice of Exmoor Ale) and a reasonable atmosphere. A bit restauranty, but that's inevitable in this location. Great place to stay except for the fire alarms in the small hours.

Just been back again, staying in the village for another week. Everything I have said about this pub previously still holds. How on earth they find such excellent staff in such a remote place is quite beyond me. This pub is a gem! and the food is brilliant.

It does get very busy during the shooting and hunting season and can be rather rowdy in Jake's Bar, so book a table in the other bar or in the restaurant.

Stayed in Withypool for a week just after this pub was taken over by the new owners. We ate there every night, the food was fantastic, beer in perfect condition, service brilliant, staff lovely. What a shame it has been through a bad time, but all that is obviously in the past. Going back for another week soon, and hoping to stay over Christmas.

I hope the previous management team have left; and the horrible dirty, foul mouthed barman.

It's good news that this place has been taken over, and by the folks at the Tarr. Lets hope they make a better job of it than the last lot.

The Royal Oak was taken over by the people who run Tarr Farm Inn at Tarr Steps at the beginning of April 2007.It is now clean, decorated with a lovely friendly team of staff. The new chefs are turning out excellent food, and residents are also delighted with the accommodation. Clearly a transformation has taken place and continues. It is so good to see all the Locals back at this lovely old Inn.Ignore the previous reviews, It's great

I can only confirm what the previous commentator has said. The service is abysmal, the staff rude inefficient and slow. The food, when it arrives is truly revolting, and not cheap either. One gets the feeling that anyone from more than a mile away is considered an outsider, and can therefore be ignored. If they do persist in wanting to spend money there, the staff go out of their way to ensure you will not want to repeat the experience.

We passed this pub whilst walking the 2 Moors Way on our way to the Tarr Steps - an obvious lunch spot. Easter Sunday was expected to be busy but it was not particularly so in the bar we enter at about 2.10. Waited an age to get served, all serving staff being in the other bar, then got grumpy service in obtaining 3 pints of Exmoor and were told that they weren't doing any more food. Those that were dining suggested that Sunday roast was probably the only option available.
By the time we had finished our pint, with still a fairly full bar, although probably just gone 3, we found we had to unbolt the door both top and bottom to make our exit.
Our vote for unfriendliest pub of the year.
We were told there is now a pub near the Tarr Steps which is better but you may need a mortgage
