Called in there last Thursday. Great pub/restaurant with friendly staff. We didn't eat there but enjoyed our drinks in a great atmosphere.

Great pub in the classic vein, very clean, tidy, efficient and welcoming. Maybe presented in a too well oiled way, but wadworths is a refreshing change in Greene king land as food is honest and tasty although approaching fancy food price points.

Popped in several weeks ago, had a pleasant meal and a decent pint. Food was what you paid for and very honest. Staff were friendly, although a few more smiles wouldn't go a miss.
Overall very good, clean and traditional. will return.

Wow! We really enjoyed this pub. Such a lovely setting to mark our special evening. The food is excellent. The staff are down to earth and so are the prices. Very glad we booked as it was busy even though we were quite early doors.

A really good pub. First visit since new people (who've been here a little while). Liked it before. Still good now.

Well redecorated and furnished. A good cosy, comfy feel. The punters were a nice mix of types and ages. You know the sort of thing, slightly posh looking middle aged friends with meal and bottle of wine, slightly not so posh fellas having a chat at the bar and some (very nice) youngsters. That lovely mix of good old friendly boozer but nice enough to enjoy a meal in. Dogs welcome I think.

Usual wadworths beers. Well kept. Food was good. Definitely home made. The landlord and his wife were both cheery with that good balance of checking how things are running while having a smile and a chat with whoever wants one. Staff all good and friendly.

There was a group of acoustic (no loudspeakers) bluegrass musicians jamming in the corner. They were good and atmosphere was great. Didn't drown out conversation and it's a big enough pub if it's not your cup of tea. A monthly thing. Some people were obviously there to enjoy the music, for others it was just their local and some had come for a meal. Can't say fairer than that on a Tuesday night.

Visited the golden lion for the first time yesterday. What can I say! Fantastic friendly pub serving really amazing roast lunch with all the trimmings! The portions are huge and I could only manage one of their yummy puddings. We'll be going again for sure. Just one thing... it was so busy we had to wait a little while for a table. Brid the landlady said its best to book a table in the future.‎

In for a meal yesterday for the 1st time in a couple of years........ still very good value and excellent food! Shame the landlord is off to Salcombe in Devon, - hope the new people will keep The Lion as lovely as it is now.

p.s. Agree with bornandbred - just love the new sign!!!

Now a really good pub, will be a shame if it is changed in the near future due to the landlord leaving for pastures new, it should remain a good decent community pub.

One thing I loved was the new pub sign, different on both sides showing views into and out of Winchester behind the lion. Hand painted by a regular apparrently, well done wish more pubs in Winchester had decent signs, instead of surrendering to corporate plastic.

nice food and facilities very clean, the pub is bland and uneventful and the food lacklustre, but its quiet and with good parking, great for an afternoon meeting or whatever.

It's been a couple of months (just after last summer) that we came into this pub and its great to see it getting better and better.....The 'Lion' has a real strong character feel to it now - clearly taking on it's own identity. When we visited this week the place was fairly full with a mix of people - many groups eating and wine on the tables - yet also locals at the bar and in the small area at the end of the bar. We ate, and the curry (that the landlord cooks)was fantastic, (we were told the curry night is even better!) while my partner had a steak - again cooked to perfection. From talking to the barman, it sounds as though they are going to change the menu at the Lion slightly - and we look forward to trying that when we pass by again in a couple of months. The guest beer was for a retired brewer - and whilst not to my partners taste - I loved it! My partner has a taste for wine - and told me that the South African white was one of the best she's tasted!

In our travels round this area, the Golden Lion remains a firm favourite! Well done to the Landlord and his staff...!!

Someone has obviously got a chip on their shoulder. This pub is a vast improvement on what it was previously, and with comments like is it a pub or club, I cannot take your review seriously. Real ales, guest beers an extensive wine selection means it is a pub for all tastes. Food is now requested not only from regulars and new customers but from outside organisations for functions and lunches. If we are missing one person, and that is Anonymous who posted the previous comment...it is no loss.

Also noticed the guitar group and the endless warm up, but apparently they are going to play more recognisable tunes shortly. All in all though a small criticsm for what is a better and better pub.
If you see signs for curry night, go! I went last tuesday, 11 curries from mild to hot including vegetarian, side dishes and rices etc. 11 for all you could eat! excellent.

this is one of the best pubs to have shown up on the radar in quite a while. Its under new management and has been spruced up quite a bit, and has a very welcoming feel to it. Good range of beer at *v* good prices and the food is the same. I turned up also on the guitar practice night ( a thursday )and was not in the least put off by this, it just added more interest tp the evening ( "anonymous" sounds like a bit of a precious type ) in fact I plan on joining in one of these days, it is open to anyone who wants to learn or improve.

Popped in last week with a group of friends. Wanted to go since hearing good things about the new landlord. Staff were very friendly. Food was okay, pub grub at low prices, nothing special though. What we found a bit off putting was the local guitar group practising in the corner!

Went back in to this pub the other evening - it continues to get better and better!! There are two things you must try - the real ales which are kept so excellentlt and the home cooked Ham, Egg and Chips - FANTASTIC!!! My friend had house white wine reccomended to her - a South African - chilled to the right temperature, lovely large (Friendly!) glasses and home cooked lasagne. Terrific value for money and very friendly customers AND staff.

Good pub, beer is kept by someone who knows what they are doing, the food is honest at honest prices. 100% improvement on what it was. I look forward to seeing how this place developes and matures into a truly great pub.

The new Landlord and friendly staff have turned this once dingy pub into a warm and welcoming place to drink and eat in. A wide range of well kept real ales appear to be available.
