No real ale last week and no sign that there had been for some time. A bit rough and ready but not too bad.

I went in here before and after a Chelsea FC match. Found the customers and staff all very friendly. Also did a few real ales, all priced quite reasonable. All things considered a top pub.

I came in here several years ago, and remember that it stood out from the rest of the surrounding establishments on the dreary alcopop drag. Sunderland's best pubs aren't in the centre, but judging by the more recent comments this is one of the best. A few ales to try, which in itself isn't too common in the centre.

i've lived in sunderland all my life and the borough is in my top 5. it has a wide variaty of ale and excellent cocktails made by very friendly staff. if you're a regular or it's your first time in you'll be made to feel welcome and always find someone to talk to. I agree the Borough is a dying breed of pub especially in a city centre.

oh completely forgot: Borough has the best drinks collections, espacially for ale lovers :)

when I'm reading the comments i have mnore the feeling that they are talkin bout a different pub. I have never seen that someone has been treated bad or anything like this in there. It is my favourite pub in sunderland, nice people, good music and not in the fashion hype but real. the bar is not too big it is normal and I like that it is in the middle. I think it is pretty good that they have an upstairs floor as well for concerts. Borough is definitely not a place without soul, as a matter of fact it has a lot of soul. it is an alternative crowd what is maybe not everyones taste as nowadays the people are more keen on the fashion side of life! for me the best and most comfortable pub in sunderland.

i recently visited this bar as i was visiting from cumbria. i found the staff was rude and intimidating and they really made their own rules up. i shall not be returning. as for the pub the bar is too big and not enough customer room

i was very disappointed with the pub and i was treated badly by the staff. i also had friends with me and they were also ignored and spoken to badly from the male barstaff i certainly wont be going again or the 3 friends i was with

keep going to places like this before it turns into another soul-less clone

Nice atmosphere, all in all a decent pub.

Far superior to the frenzied student infested "trendy" bars nearby.

A proper pub.

Unusual in that it has a big bar in the centre of a small room.

The bar takes up a central square position, and everyone crams in round the edges.

On a regular basis, bands cram bands in too! Excellent judge of expected attendance on a match day.

Friendly staff, okay prices, good juke box. One of a dieing breed of city boozer.
