user reviews of the Cock and Rabbit, Great Missenden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place was used for filming 'Midsommer Murders' and it retains that atmosphere; life threatening.

Things are so desperate that the villagers now intend to buy a pub in the next village so that they can have a decent pub in the locality.

I hadnt been to the cock and rabbit for about 10 years prior to having lunch today. I can now remember why. The beer is OK, I had a pint of IPA and there were a few choices. The food however, was awful and overpriced. The staff were very cold and the place was as silent and empty as a tomb (1pm on a saturday and empty so something must be wrong) I heard one couple ask if the owner knew of any walks in the area and he just replied curtly, "No". The lady then said to her husband "so that would be a No then!"

The inside reminded me of a working mens club with a centimetre of brown looking residue on everything, My wife and I got a bit fed up of shoeing away fruit flies from the food also.

In short, It could be a gold mine in this location, but it needs 50k spent on a refurb and a serious attitude adjustment. Never again in current status.

Passed by this pub on a hike. Lovely spot on beautiful Lee village green. The beer seemed OK, Morlands brew an ale for them especially. I believe the pub brewed its own at one time. I can't comment on the food as I did not partake.

All four of us all felt bad vibes with this pub.
We got no greeting whatsoever, no friendliness there at all.
Toilets were filthy, pub dirty, glasses dirty.
We certainly didn't want to eat there, we just wanted to get out of the place.
It was such a shame because the village is lovely.
It needs a lot of tlc.

Had not read the reviews before my visit and though I could see it was not everyone's idea of the perfect night out, I actually liked it a lot.

Beer was ok, reminded me of the saying that no beer was bad just some better than others. Italian food was well presented and substantial, though admittedly none of my party tried anything that wasn't Italian, why would you? It quite clearly is an Italian restaurant more than a pub and though the decor was a little tired, it was not unpleasant.

The place was an experience very different from any other that comes to mind, I really liked the village atmosphere and found most of the locals very welcoming too. I have visited very quirky pubs before, in fact I look for them, it is because of such places that we have a choice when we go out, rather than spend our lives in characterless theme pubs.

It reminded me of the Duke of York at Iddesleigh in Devon, though admittedly the beer there is exceptional. If it lacks one thing that every pub needs, it is a good real ale, so if you're reading this, you might look at Ruddles, London Pride or 6x to lift trade.

'Complete toffee'. I have not heard that expression for half a decade or more! You sound like one of those 'clicky' locals that I reffered to in my previous posting. One of the elite and indeed the few ; 'The Cock & Rabbit Club'.

The place is by your own admission is, "well lived in and used". I believe that I have already expressed that in more exacting terms. This is not what people are looking for on an evening out.

This website is about 'beer'. There is a clue in the title;
beerintheevening.com . The Cock & Rabbit is not about beer. What exactly it is about as a business still escapes my understanding.

My verdict remains, 'unacceptable as a pub'.

Regards,

Padantnic

I have never read such complete toffee in all my life. Have been visiting this pub for years. The fact that the current owner who is also the chef has been here 23 years speaks volumes. The Calves Liver is the best I have tasted in a long time and the food is sourced from local markets and Smithfield, Billingsgate etc. Nice to have a place that is not your run of the mill wine bar style, strip lighting, magnolia or is it beige eyerywhere. This place has charecter and is obviously well lived in and used. If you haven't you must try it. Best food in the area by a long way and not boil in the bag either.

I visited the Cock and Rabbit on New Year's Day with a party of 5 people. We arrived at the pub with a healthy appetite, having been walking through the beautiful Chilterns countryside. Unfortunately, we left thoroughly disappointed with our dining experience.

The menu is extensive and contains a range of apparently attractive dishes. Only one of our party had the wisdom to choose the traditional Italian food , and he was quite content with his Pasta al Quattro Formaggio.

Most of us ventured into more fancy, and more expensive, haute cuisine. We were left overwhelmingly disappointed, presented with poorly cooked - and frankly quite repulsive - calves liver and venison respectively. Each of these dishes cost 12.90. London prices, but not anywhere near the quality I would expect of a good London gastropub. Bizarrely, a pitifully small salad was presented on each plate in a large cabbage leaf, an unnecessary and rather obstructive edifice to compete with on the plate.

Is it really possible to cook Sausage and Chips so poorly? The member of our party who opted for this traditional pub dish could not have been more disappointed. The sausage was advertised as 'Cumberland' but there was little resemblance to that most delicious Cumbrian creation. The chips appeared to have been fried, and re-fried and fried again, such was there oily texture.

Our desserts were little better, with chunks of gelatine apparent in the recently defrosted Pecan Pie. However, the 3-scoops of ice cream were good, and the chocolate cake passable.

Our bill came to an eyewatering 110, and was presented with no breakdown.

The Cock and Rabbit should slim down its huge menu and try sticking to the fresh produce that is boasted about on the restaurant's website. From our experience, it seems that the basic Italian parts of the menu can be done justice by the kitchen - stick with what you know! Until this externally attractive pub (don't even get me started on the state of the toilets) changes, I would strongly recommend staying on the outside.

I agree with pedantnic, I have not had such a poor meal in years. Sent three dishes back as were over cooked, one chicken dangerously under cooked!
The place was dirty, glasses, cutlery and esp the loos. The ladies I was told was no better than a public loo in Kings Cross.
The staff were rude to the point of abuse. The decor does not seem to have changed since 1972.
I am surprised that they manage to retain any customers.
Did not stay long or pay the full overpriced bill.
I would only recommed it to someone I seriously disliked.

Superb setting and building on the outside. Used as location for 'Midsommer Murders'. The inside is a different story - shabby, in need of more than a lick of paint. Indifferent staff, with one particular barman who has all the charm of an Italian Basil Faulty! Small customer base of clicky locals who seem to treat the place as a private club. Unacceptable as a pub.

Just been for lunch, pub badly needs sprucing up. I asked for a pint of lime and soda and had to ask them to fill it to the top, put some ice in and add a slice of lime. They charged me 2 for it as well! My first dish went straight back, I think it was off! They acted as though they take dishes back to the kitchen on a fairly regular basis. The pasta they brought me was distictly average. The toilet was fairly grubby too.

Pub/Restaurant in a lovely setting...

Decor needs a revamp, Menu needs to be simplified, ingredients need to be fresher. Place was empty, Food expensive. I won't be rushing back to eat.

If you want good food, good beer and a nice atmosphere, then I suggest you look elsewhere! We waited over an hour for our food, and when it came it was pretty poor. Only 1 out of the 3 of us actually ate it, we refused to pay for three in the end and left hungry and disappointed.

Limited variety of beers, but food, atmosphere and the building itself are all superb

Wonderful location, nice garden, Italian food by real Italians (stick with the pasta and you shouldn't be disappointed).
