user reviews of The Walnut Tree, Mere

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Its not really a pub more a restaurant the staff did not really have any interest in the bar there was a few ales nothing spectacular but nice.

Obviously this is a new build gastro pub and of course feels like it so nothing really to expect there.

Would I go back? No
Would I tell a friend? Probably not

A family/childrens restaurant style pub with little character and staff who seem to have little interest in the bar.
But, the pub does sell a good range of beer, but not always well kept nor well served.

As I understand it the pub does do a lot to be part of the local community and so that is very commendable.

A new pub serving the local community very well.

Whislt this definately is a new housing development pub devoid of the charm of a typical thatched pub as other commentaries suggest. However it does have a great selection of ales and lagers, on tap and is always a very welcoming environment. Guest ales usually include one of the smaller local breweries and are always worth a try, as you will often find some true gems.

The landlord excels at looking after the local community and getting them involved with the pub.

The Food is good honest pub grub and doesn't pretend to be one of the new aged gastro pubs. Consequently the prices are good old fashion pub grub prices not new aged gastro prices., and provide excellent value for money.

A couple of ales on display but I did get the impression that this was more of a restaurant than a pub. The food did look good and even though I did not eat any of it myself, I did have a look at their quite extensive menu. The atmosphere was pretty non existent (which is what I what have expected from a restaurant style pub) even though it was reasonably busy, especially for a Tuesday night. Go if you cannot be bothered to walk into Mere town centre for one of the other pubs in the area.

I feel a lot of the comments about the Walnut Tree miss the point. That any pub exists is testament to the progressive policies of the local council and the sensible, sensitive developers. I should state I have no connection to either. The 'new' pub might lack interior 'character' but ultimately this takes time to develop and evolve. Why should we expect all new build pubs to be banal pastiches of rustic country pubs? Surely if the British pub is to have a future, then it must evolve. As it happens, this particular pub serves an ever-changing range of well-kept ales and offers good, if not great value, food.

this place retains nothing of the character of an old rural pub.
- it reminds me of a dozen or more new housing development pubs in Milton Keynes.
i should mention that the ale was fairly acceptable.
There seemed to be plenty of staff, but most weren't doing much, so service was a little tardy.

The layout of the pub is terrible, the food is tracked through the bar (cramped at the best of times) into the eating area. It is rather disappointing that for what seems to be a food orientated pub that there is practically no waitress service.

A good selection of beers here. The food is very good indeed, both at lunch and in the evenings.

I popped in for a swift pint on 18 July 2007. This looks and feels like a modern building planted in a brand new housing development. It has the feel of a "wacky wharehouse" rather than a village pub and the bouncy castle must arrive soon! But clearly the place is energetically manged and trying to best meet the needs of the housing development. The pint was good, I did not have time to try the food.

Nice clean light pleasantly-decorated pub with non smoking in most of the area.
Landlord couple have great energy and ideas so there is always a good reason to visit.
Food is quite good although little local influence or quality ingredients.
Recommend sitting outside on warm days and evenings; coffee and free newspapers in mornings.
Childrens play area.

New Pub, built on an old site, on the edge of a new small estate. Light, bright and lots going on.

My husband and I found this pub excellent. The staff were superb, The food was excellent, hot, and the cook certainly knows his stuff. All this in a clean ambient atmosphere. I shall certainly recomend this pub to my freinds.
