The beer and service here were very good on my most recent visit but I once had the worst Welsh rarebit I can ever recall here. Usually, I'll eat just about anything but I couldn't face it. No discernable mustard or other spicing and the cheese was tasteless plastic. Just beneath the cheese was a layer of some lardy/mash like material that was truly horrible. To be fair, this was a year ago. I'm hoping the chef has changed.

We recently visited the Grapes to find it under new management - surprising as the previous team had breathed new life into the place...

Oh dear. The Grapes used to have a name for quality, locally sourced and home cooked food, but that is clearly no longer the case. Standard pub fare being sold at home cooked locally produced prices - rather poor for the money, with reports from friends of a rather rude response by the new manager to a complaint about said food.. A remark made bout the presentation of a meal being somewhat akin to that served by a fish and chip shop was met with .."perhaps you should go to the fish and chip shop then"..

So we did. Many times.

Have been here several times, food has always been good, some of the atmosphere has come back to the place as well. Lovely scenery / views as well.

Really pleasant rural village pub in a listed building. The beers were from Evan Evans, including a special 'Trial' beer. It was very quiet during our visit on a Sunday evening, but still seemed to be a nice place to spend an hour or two.

I agree with Macsuperstar as my wife and I frequent The Grapes often. Since the refubishment it has taken time to bed in and the character of the place is returning, although more subdued lighting would be a help in the lounge! A change in management in early 2008 has seen the place turn around entirely though, the food is great (not cheap)/not expensive) and the Evan Evans ales are most welcome with Best and Cwrw as staples, there are usually a couple of other seasonal ales to choose from (Golden Hop was great back in the summer) as well as your standard fare on tap. Service is fine too - consistently. The cash injection for the place was welcome and for guests the accomodation rooms are well appointed. Live music is also on the agenda whch has led to some great nights too!

I'm sorry but i have to disagree with the comments below. I have been to the Grapes several time since it has reopened and far from the locals staying away there seem to be more in there than ever. The food and service were good, i particularly enjoyed the selection of Evan-evans beer that was available

Sorry - I ought to add that when the waitress asked me how the meal was, I replied that I had had a lot better. She simply walked away!!!!

Itsb recently reopened after a refurbishment. Unfortunately not a good one. It looks costly, but has only achieved to knock some of the character out of the place.

The bar was always lively. The locals stay away now. Their is a large television poring out music videos all day long - not popular at all (a TV was only ever on in the past when there was a big game - the current owner ought to revert to this if he wants custom to return).

Had lunch there today - food was expensive and very poor.

No change then!
This place has been going downhill since the 90's and not got any better,
Time for a kick up the old proverbial, They probably make enough out of the unsuspecting first time Holiday visitors,
Retraining in customer care & a new chef is called for!

Always loved this pub, greatly disappointed on last two visits July & August 2006. Food and service deteriorated. Particularly did not like staff attitude.

The above review for The Grapes was meant for another pub in that area, The Goat, my view of The Grapes is entiely different.
The more I think about our family meal there, the more apalled I become. The pepper sauce had to be asked for twice so that it could be eaten with the meal, the sauce in the chicken and leek pie was like wallpaper paste (a little cream wouldnt have gone amiss) two meals that were the same had peas and onion rings missing from it. To cap it all half way through eating a young waiter came to the table complete with spray gun and cloth enquiring if we had finished our meal...We used to eat here alot but it has gradually become worse, we keep giving it a chance but I am afraid after this time it will be the last....

Very friendly staff, good food and a roaring fire in winter. Its a good hotel as well as the main pub for Maentwrog. Fantastic.
