user reviews of the Hunter's Inn, Parracombe

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It seems that someone has bought this pub, sacked all the staff and turned the pub around(or at least started to). The service was efficient and the staff seemed pleased to be doing their jobs. It has been cleaned up quite a bit, not least the toilets which used to stick,
That being said, it was fairly quite at the time of my visit, so perhaps they still struggle in busy sessions, but something about the general attitude suggests this is not the case. I have also heard that the food has vastly improved so lets hope they keep up the good work.

Whenever I visit this area, I pop in to the Hunters Inn in the hope that someone has bought the place, sacked all of the staff and turned it into the fantastic pub that it could and should be. It wouldn't be difficult as it is a nice building in a wonderful location.
Alas, my most recent visit was as disappointing as all others. The pub is still dirty and the service abysmal so I had one pint and left.

I have to admit to being very disappointed with this place. Despite all the good things said and it's Good Beer and Good Pub Guide entries, I just didn't enjoy it. There were too many beers on for turnover and a couple were on the turn, the food was bland and unimaginative and the place itself should have been full of olde worlde charm, but was opened out out inside and too light and airy and full of contemporary (gastro-pub-style) furniture. Staff pretty crap too.

Despite the area being world class this pub is a fish out of water really.
The interior is bland and depressing the outside ok but a tourist hell hole.
Fox and goose at Parracombe was better.

6/10

Enormous mock Tudor type of pub/hotel in as idyllic a setting as you could want. The pub very much divides itself into the bar for locals, a rather blander area overlooking the garden for the grockles and ne'er the twain shall meet.
Beer is mostly local and I have to say I rather liked the place, but tend to agree about the sticky tables...

What a truly dreadful pub, from the moment you walk in to get served by an unwholesome looking women behind the bar, to the sticky table tops, truly awful beer, food that took over an hour to be served (other customers were leaving prior to the food arriving) and to call it canteen standard would be an insult to most canteens. Orders were messed up...I could go on but youll get the drift.
The area is outstanding but please dont spoil your holiday by going to this place!

My partner and I have just returned home after spending a fabulous Christmas at The Hunter's Inn. The landlord did a magnificent job of transporting clients and staff into the valley despite the horrendous road conditions. The breakfasts were first class and the Christmas day lunch was superb. I opted for duck breast which was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was cost and friendly. The inn has gone through a lot of updating under the careful guidance of the current owners including the installation of new toilets. I understand that a lot more updating and upgrading is in the pipeline. I look forward to our next visit.

Visited the Hunters Inn on several occasions this year, food has always been excellent, as has the range and quality of ales.
I have spoken to the landlord about the Inn, apparently they purchased the Inn 3 years ago, living locally they had always found the Inn closed and failing fast.
The building has obviously had a lot of money spent on it in the last few years, but still needs more.
The Inn is a true local pub with lots of intresting characters at the bar.
I have always been made to feel very welcome by all the staff, often descending on them with 3 children and a dog in tow!
The beer has always been superb, the food has been some of the best i've found in North Devon
At times the Inn can be very busy (Easter, August Bank holidays); however i've never waited more than 35minutes for my food.
The Inn could do with a bigger bar as there is obviously only room for 2 people to work behind it, but the landlord has plans to increase the size of the bar.
The Loos were very clean if not a bit tired, apparently they havebeen waiting for planning consent for an extension for more toilet capacity.
Strongly recommend and can't wait for the next beer festival next September

The Hunter's Inn was gleaming in the sunshine when we visited on a weekday lunchtime, and looking smart after a recent exterior re-paint . Although we didn't eat, the food looked fine. Doom Bar and Bay's Gold were on offer along with the usual Exmoor ales. Great location for coast walks.

The last two reviews are absolutely correct. This place is a run down dump, with only the surroundings and views to make anyone want to go there. Kitchen staff can't cope and the food is very poor - the beer nothing special either. I suggest it be avoided until the licensee has changed.

Absolutely terrible. everything about this place apart from the setting is poor.
CAMRA pub of the year? Do me a favour, this place is awful. Only the bearded corduroy wearing camra types (and theie husbands) would ever consider this place to be a good pub. The food is awful, the beer just about undrinkable and the service just dire.
Please will someone sort this place out.

Having spotted that this is now the CAMRA Pub of The Year 2009, decided a walk and visit would surely be a grand Easter trip. Imagine my disappointment when even though the owner, who we met early in the morning claimed to have 6 Exmoor ales on draught, when we returned after a gruelling 6 mile walk to Woody Bay found a under staffed, poorly managed over rated hostelry. The queues for the bar was thirty people with two members of staff serving as if trained by British Rail. Most rooms in the Inn had Private on the front ( not very welcoming), the toilets were horrendous ( with queues as well) and waiting staff all hidden away in the kitchen and servery. Although someone did appear and shouted from a balcony to the rear garden - we don't serve food out here! Save yourself a great deal of disappontmtnet and give this one a miss until the next owner - who may get it right. They only get 1 on the rating because they were open.

Lovely pub in a lovely setting with decent beer and good food. On a sunny day its beautiful to sit outside. Can get quite busy but the service has been pretty good whenever we've gone.

Edwardian country house in a secluded valley, spectacular walks on National Trust land. Excellent place to sit outside on a nice day with good food and beer. Watch out for the Peacocks!! A place to relax.
