user reviews of the Stag and Hounds, Binfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Has had a major makeover this year....... rather gastro style. The barrels of real ale behind the bar have gone and it has lost the pub atmosphere. Tend to be full of thirty somethings with laptops and smart phones. Beer and food are fine if a little on the high priced side.

I'm surprised at some of reviews for this place, as I found it to be a lovely old pub, with real character, beautiful both inside and out. I sat by a roaring fireplace in one of the little rooms off the bar, and greatly enjoyed it on a recent Tuesday lunchtime, returning to a village I used to live in as a child for the first time in very many years.

I had a couple of pints of a pleasant ale, and a plate of scampi and chips that I found both well-cooked and substantial.

It does, however, lose one point from me because the landlord some 25 years ago (I imagine he's dead by now) had an affair with a young barmaid, who happened to be my mother, and we had to move away. Brian I think his name was, the filthy fecker.

Nice pub though.

Really very disappointed with this place overall. We've been several times, living nearby, but hadn't been for quite a while and thought we'd give it another go. The background music being played was not only awful but far too loud. I personally have trouble hearing conversation when ambient noise levels are too high, but others in the party also commented on the loudness and dreadful quality of the music, especially given the small size of the room we were in. This was compounded by the fact that our food order - a salad and three burgers - took nearly an hour to arrive. When it did arrive, the chicken, bacon and avocado salad was without avocado. After being requested, a few small slices of avocado were unceremoniously dumped onto the table. One of our portions of chips had large fragments of old papadum in amongst it. The desserts were ok, although the crumble was microwaved to within an inch of its life and a large part of it was inedible. Had the food and service been perfect, the 60 bill would have still been a little high for four mains (one of which was a salad), three desserts, and one or two (small!) drinks each.

Nice pub located in a rural location on the edge of Binfield. The old building has 2 or 3 comfortable rooms, plus outdoor seating on a patio and garden at the front. A range of food is available. Beers were Marstons Pedigree, Courage Directors, Wychwood Hobgoblin & Thwaites Grouse Beater. 3 of these are gravity dispensed. Be careful how much the young staff are charging you.

Went here on mothers day very dissapointing, roast well below average, only one small batter asked for an extra one and got CHARGED, two small roast and processed beef. two vergetarian choices, my son had cheese tart which was burnt and very small, well over priced and we complained, young lad was not at all bothered and said thats the price and always has been. Definitely will not be returning and certainly will not be recommending. Slow service and poor quality.

Having read the previous reviews, I headed to the Stag and Hounds with fear and a growling noise (which was probably just hunger) in my stomach. Experienced the complete opposite to the other reviews - food was terrific, fresh and tasty, and service was great. For four people it cost 20 for our main meals, with generous puddings to boot. Would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Worst Sunday Roast ever! The beef would not have been out of place on a road tyre, gravy was non-existant, vegetables undercooked, potatoes overcooked, yorkshire pudding burnt inside. AVOID!

The food was not particularly expensive by any means. It was a nice, pokey sort of pub and the fish and chips were well a bit nice. My friend has the ravioli, however, and was dismayed to find that the portion was enough to satisfy a reasonably big guinea pig. Fortunately, desserts were forthcoming.
Also, my annoying vegetarian mate decided to cajole the bar staff into swapping this and that around and not adding something or other. I found this very irritating but the staff catered to her whims. God knows why.

Without doubt the worst meal I have ever had. Service was non existant . Took 4 hours for starters and main courses and even then two main courses didn't arrive and what did arrive was burnt to a cinder.
Management didn't have a clue and were only interested in getting their money .
Customer satisfaction and reputation are no longer on the menu I'm sorry to say.
To be avoided at all costs !

Bit food orientated but not at all bad. Lovely ale.

Quiet and air clean. Nice pint, pity I could not make room for another - amazingly no disabled toilet!

John and Tracy have now moved on to pastures new. The new landlord / lady do not seem to want to make the same effort of introducing themselves as the previous occupiers. The beer is still first class and the food is obviously still good enough to pack the pub to the rafters most evenings of the week.

I can recommend the olives and rustic bread as a light snack and beer absorber.

Very nice pub, with good selection of beers, and usually a couple of guest real ales. Food is very good, it aims to be better than your usual pub fare, and there is always a selection of specials alongside the usual menu. True it is slightly more pricey, but it is worth it.

This is a very pretty old pub with a great history. It's got wooden beams and open fires which make it good in the winter. Plus, it's got a large triangular beer garden out the front, which makes it great in summer. There is a good selection of wine and beers. I liked the beers particularly as some of them weren't "pulled", but were taken straight from the keg behind the bar.

My major gripe with the pub is in line with the other reviewers here. The food is expensive for what it is. For some years the pub has tried to re-brand itself as a more upmarket establishment, the prices go up and things like wood pigeon appear on the menu. Then the pub goes a bit quiet and a more conservative menu comes back, which means that it gets busier and then it re-brands. So the loop continues. It seems to have found a more manageable menu now but it's still a lot more expensive than similar pubs near by for very similar quality of food. There are some great places in Windsor and Bray that cost about the same, for much better food.

So, overall, I'd say pub, beer, wine, atmosphere and location all get full marks. Just beware of the food unless you've recently been paid your bonus!

Since being taken over by one of the friendliest landlords you can meet this pub has rocketed in my estimation. The beer is always clean and delicious, even if it's not your favourite ale on tap there are always four real ales on offer along with lager and Guinness of extreme quality. I found the menu to be extensive and there is something for everybody from traditional pies to Wood Pigeon or Trout, there is always something intriguing on the Specials board. The restaurant area is strictly non-samoking these days but a smoking area is in a close enough vicinity but still does not allow the smell of smoke to carry through. This pub is ideal in any type of weather condition as you will never be cold in winter and never too warm in Summer!

If you are a sports car fan then John the Landlord will welcome you with open arms to drink heartily and discuss all form of automobile until the last bell tolls.

A fine pub and recommended to everyone!!

The pub, once at the centre of Windsor forest, has real beams and a large Inglenook fireplace ideal for cold winter days.

There is plenty of outside seating to enjoy any fine weather. Three seperate rooms plus large restraunt area. The "Library" features a range of favorite games, boards and cards. No pool, no TV very nice.

Great food, but not inexpensive

Had three good ales when I visited, I had Hooky, Bomberdier was also on, fortgot what the other was.

Beer was slightly warmer than I would have liked, as was the pub, roaring fires, it was cold out.

Nice staff.
