Couldn't pass up the chance to visit again whilst in Sheffield. As ever, the beers were excellent. First time visit for my mate who now realises there is good beer to be had outside of Surrey!

Roomy suburban boozer in this pleasant area which now features a very strong beer line up, meaning it rivals some of the well-known pubs in the city centre for choice.
It looks like an interwar building and consists of one large L-shaped room with a clean but not clinical feel- cosy but well-looked after. In it is a real fire and a library of beer-related literature. Pictures of old Sheffield (including an interesting map of bombed areas of the city during the war) adorn the walls.
The pub is owned by the local Abbeydale brewery and features 12 handpumps, 6 from them and 6 generally from guests, usually other local microbreweries, plus a couple of big names. The list of Continental bottled beers is also impressive. Went for a couple of the Abbeydale beers and the were in fine fettle.
In most cities, there would be be no question that the trip out would be worthwhile, but the excellent range of pubs in the centre means that you may not have time to do so. However, this is a pleasant area and if you do find yourself in this part of town then this is one to head to. Can be combined with a visit to the Ranmoor Inn up the road.

Couple of observations on Mr Bonsar's comments. Right of reply etc.. I am qualified to comment as I was in the Rising Sun on the day and at the time in question - he may recall that I was the customer who told him where White Horse Brewery was located when he asked.

I personally think he is being harsh on the Barman who was clearly (to me anyway) having a laugh when asked about real ales.

The pub WAS quiet at around 3-5pm as I am sure every other Pub in Sheffield was at that time on a Monday afternoon - had he hung around for a couple more hours he would've found it standing room only.

And a word of caution - always be wary giving Bus Fare prices: he obviously caught the 120 Stagecoach service from town; if he offered the 40 First Mainline service bus driver 1.20 for the same journey from town to Nether Green he'd get stabbed in the back of the hand.

Large pub on the main road in Fulwood, a smart residential area to the west of Sheffield, easily reached by bus ( 1.20p ) from the City Centre.

This pub is effectively the Abbeydale brewery tap and is a GBG regular.

An impressive bank of 12 handpumps offered 5 beers from Abbeydale, together with various guest beers from micros, including Old Bear, White Horse and Brewsters on my recent end-March visit.

Both the Abbeydale Brimstone and Moonshine were enjoyable tasty pints. Guest beers are priced at between 2.25p and 2.75p, depending on strength. Tasting notes are provided for the beers on offer.

The pub was very quiet on my late Monday afternoon visit and felt a bit like a hotel bar to me.

I was also disappointed by the young barman, who, whilst being friendly and efficient enough, made no secret of the fact to several customers that he was a lager drinker and, pointing dismissively to the bank of handpumps, stressed that he didn't care for "all that flat stuff". When asked where the White Horse beers originated from, he stated that he hadn't a clue and made no effort to find out. I think he's letting the side down a bit.
A marked contrast with staff in other notable Sheffield real ale pubs - eg Fat Cat, Kelham Island, Wellington - whereI've always been impressed with the staff enthusiasm and knowledge of the beers on offer.

Live music is on offer, often jazz, some evenings in one of the two interconnecting rooms.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the visit, but, with the plethora of micro-supporting real ale pubs nearer the centre of Sheffield, and the seemingly widespread availability of Abbeydale beers in many of these, I'm not convinced that its worth the time and effort ( not forgetting the bus fare !) specifically to get here

Why don't I live closer to this great pub? I don't remember upsetting anyone in a previous life! It's just not fair.

Excellent range of beers and lagers. Always of highest quality and usually with some interesting Microbrewery/Lesser known offerings. The RS is an Abbeydale owned Pub so their beers get star billing. Pity. It even appears that Abbeydale have cottoned on that their beers are not to everyones taste and have introduced some lines under a new pseudonym of Dr something-or-other. Limited Cider - guess they can only react to demand. Toilets are well overdue the renovation they are planned to get. Don't sit too close to the loos on a hot day. The pub is dog friendly - personally I have no problem with that - I am dog friendly too, but be advised that not all the doggy visitors are well behaved nor are they always particularly clean or pleasant smelling - the RS is a popular post-walkies drinking point and it can feel canine-claustrophobic in no time. Be prepared for an empty pub but a full carpark when its the School next door's turfing out time - don't let it put you off going into the pub it won't be as busy as you may imaging. I don't want to overstate the negatives - I still rate this pub as an 8 - its worth putting up with its quaint quirks for the - generally speaking - warm welcome and consitently high quality of the extensive guest beer range.

A real ale drinkers heaven. Always a great choice of styles and strengths and the Abbeydale beers are excellent. The best choice of lagers from all over the world I've ever seen too.
The food is a bit dull and mushy. The live music used to be more varied and has been reduced to just one night. There used to be a lot more jazz which I liked so I don't make the journey so much now.
However, well worth going for the beer.

true it's a long way out of city centre, but make the effort and enjoy the Abbeydale beers which are excellent.
good place.

Its a long, long way from the city centre but well worth the effort. With a cheap Stagecoach dayrider on service 120, you can reach others too, such as the Thornbridge brewery Coach & Horses in Dronfield. Open plan and well-appointed, the Abbeydale stewardship is obvious in the beer range but 12 handpumps mean that other small breweries get a look-in too. Hot food is available as well. An oasis in a beer desert.

Good music (mainly jazz, some classical) on Mondays and some other nights. Great range of bottled beers, especially Belgian. Hot food starting from next week at lunchtime and evenings. Great range of draught beers too - 10 handpumps to choose from.
