Best pint I've had in London for a long time.

Walking in the area and popped in for something to eat. Decent food, great service but the best thing was the Deuchers Flying Scotsman which was in perfect condition.

Highly recommended.

I love this pub. It seems to be all things for all people. Good food, good staff good booze. You can get a decentish cocktail or a decentish pint of IPA. Party at night and moderately family friendly in the day.
I have been to a lot of pubs, and this is one of my favorites.
looking over this reviiew I can see it looks like a plant from the owner. It's not. Of course I would say that.

I've been a Brixton resident for 3 years and this is my favorite pub in the area. The staff are great - I even play football with one of the barmen, great lad and brings some Brazillian flair to our team. Matt the landlord is a good bloke and the even serve Deuchars which takes me back to my uni days in Edinburgh, some time ago now unfortunately.

This is NOT a real ale boozer, but it is a real good pub which on certain evenings they take the tables out and you can have a dance. Food is very good too. One of my mates goes there so often he gets invited to staff do's! Highly recommended for a good night out. Toilets aren't great but I try not to spend too much time in pub toilets as a rule anyway!

Hmmmm. Not so impressed with this pub - okay it does look like a cool pub and cool people go in there, if you know what I mean but I am the kind of guy who likes to have a full pint of ale for 3.30 and not filled to somewhere between half and full. The service was good and it did seem to be a well run establishment but not the place to have a serious ale. Maybe a little too pretentious for my liking - I am not that young or self-occupied these days.

been going here for years and it does the fri/sat night thing admirably. staff are always good, drink prices fair and mostly it was (last visit 6mths ago) free to get in. But why go to this place with it's faux trendy crowd, increasingly looking like clapham over flow not the cool boho ish Brixton of old.. Go to Mango Landin for the real Brixton beal.

Who is the fit guythat works behind the bar? Think he's new, browish hair......

Anyhoo love the pub. Great place for a boogie on a Friday adn Saturday night. I've managed ot drag some of my North and East London friends down and they have fallen in love with it too.

I think the White Horse is consistently very good, whether it's for a lunchtime meal or for an evening of drinking and dancing. Food is good quality and the staff are friendly and efficient. It's been done up recently, but to me it still looks the same as it did before - a typical Brixton pub/bar - wooden tables, mismatched chairs, exposed brick work etc. The toilets were fine when I went there (judging by the comments below that hasn't always been the case). It's well worth visiting on a night out.

hi bootsyjam,

i agree the toilets on friday and saturday nights can get pretty rank. we have been looking at knocking them down and extending but unfortunately are unable to do this so we are going to rip them out and refurb. this will be completed in the next couple of months.

thanks for your comments.

Well good stuff if the food has been sorted. Unfortunately the toilets are still absolutely disgusting. On a busy night the floor is wet with a mixture of piss and water and you squelch out leaving wet footprints behind you wafting the smell of the loo behind you. Gross.

The white horse is my local and when I first moved to brixton It's only redeeming feature! The landlord and all the staff are lovely and welcoming. I have never had a problem with the food and have even taken my snobby mother there for a steak which she loved. The food is really cheap for the quality you get and all service with a smile. If you go for dinner late friday or sat night, then you wont find a seat as it turns into a great party after 9-10 pm. It has a really chilled atmosphere with candles and a great wine list throughout the week! This is great on quite nights as well as the big night out on friday/sat.

hi bootsjam,
thanks for your feedback on the white horse. its good to hear that some of the changes are being recognised.
we did have similar feedback on the size of the roast dinners so they are now bigger. unfortunately slightly more expensive, 6.50 to 7.50.
as for the burgers i am genuinly sorry that you were not happy with quality?? its quite difficult to give you an answer as they are proving to be very popular and we have been recieving positive comments.
if you give the white horse another try for a mid week food and drink experience i hope that you will find the menu, atmosphere and service more enjoyable.
thanks
matt

Has a new landlord/manager who has brightened the place up a bit. Some damn good club nights going on now (has a dancefloor) that last until late. It's good for that, not so sure yet as a place to sit in and have a pint/have some food. Men's toilets used to be skanky as hell-don't know if this has been sorted yet.
Sunday roast portions were small when I was there, and my friend had to finish off my burger as he was still hungry-burger was not that great either. Long way to go to be a decent pub, but good as a boozy clubby night IMO.
bootsyjam - 15 Jun 2006 13:44
Possibly better later on ... I can distill the comments already made and refer to
(i) cliques
(ii) nowhere to sit.
The two being linked as groups of people had taken over entire (long) tables. The music was ok but the ambience was entirely more white and quiet than I was expecting / hoping for.

I like to go here on a Saturday night. Always something to dance to, lots of places to sit down, open til 3 am. And they've sorted the loos out now as well.

nice pub, good tunes, friendly staff, only gripe is the place gets so smokey. get a fan or something guys!
simon - 16 Jul 2004 12:30
this is my local. nice pub but no-where to sit, doesn't help when certain people are allowed to reserve half the entire seating plan of the pub....and then don't actually sit down. Music also too loud. Ok on a saturday night, but not when your trying to have a quiet sunday pint......
Emily - 17 Jun 2004 13:23
This is my local... the toilets were indeed ruffasarseoles for a while, but they have been fully renovated - Sunday can be a little dry during the day, but the night perks up with live djs... Deffo grab a sofa if you can, chill out, and let someone else get you your drinks - hehe
teecee - 18 May 2004 15:17
This is a great pub, with the friedliest staff and crowds i have come accross in Brixton. Great food served all week long. Big comfy leather sofas and a great range of cocktails.
annie - 16 Mar 2004 14:06
Like Shoreditch in the suburbs. Cool, fun music. Bare brick walls, and occasional art monstrosities.

Best place on a Sunday. Well, at least it was before their incredible Sunday Roasts degenerated into mundanity.

Nice view of the crack whores across the way too.
Nick the Local - 11 Feb 2004 16:03
Went in there for a fab sunday roast- it WAS amazing, but then visited the loos after and will never be going back there again!!
Tony Grimshaw - 21 Jan 2004 13:51
The venue is a dump- the toilets are like Glastonbury to say the least! The food is amazing, serving up great dishes.
sophie lawrence - 19 Jan 2004 16:49
Nice place - although on Sunday it can seem like everyone in there has been to the fridge the night before and is on a bad comedown! Good dj's on friday and sat nights, reasonable selection of drinks
Jim - 4 Jan 2004 17:45
This is one of my favorite places to spend a Sunday afternoon with the papers whilst stuffing their fantastic Sunday lunch down my gullet.

They do food evey day/evening.

The bar staff are very friendly and the music is great.

Def worth the 10 min walk up The Hill. As per other reviews: nice chilled out vibe, rammed on Saturdays, but seems to clear for the last 2/3 hours as people chip off clubbing. If the funky music moves you, get dancing. If it doesn't, then just find a space on one of the sofas and join in with the conversation - even if you don't know anyone, the locals will gladly have a giggle... nice place, nice people (nice food too)
teecee - 21 Oct 2003 14:05
