I recall the evening in question that user blue_scrumpy is referring to and it saddens me that someone could make such a hurtful comment!..myself along with many other customers recall the rudeness of this man and that the landlady was totally in her right to respond to his unjust complaint. This particular evening was extremely busy for that time of the evening. There was a large group of people who arrived who were ordering drinks in a somewhat disorganised fashion. However the lady apologised to the waiting customers and acknowledged that they were waiting. And apart from a certain disgruntled customer we accepted that there would be a small wait and carried on with catching up with our friends. The comments from this man are incorrect. This man was very rude and grunted even when acknowledged that he would be next. We all laughed after he ordered...clearly on his own and with a personality such as his it's clear why he drinks alone!
On a positive note this pub has totally transformed from a few years ago. Its clear to see that there's a lot of love for this pub and well done to the new landladies for keeping it traditional and not serving food!!...note to little man with no personality...try a little patience and appreciate sometimes situations occur although annoying but can't be helped.

Probably the worst of 10 pubs I tried yesterday in Bedfordshire. My visit was soured by the attitude of the barperson. She didn't take too kindly to me suggesting that I had been waiting a while to be served and that she was serving groups of people who had walked through the door long after me and became quite condescending when challenged. The ale selection was also poor - just London Pride & Doom Bar. My Pride was ok and the pub was admittedly fairly busy on a Saturday evening. The interior was nice enough and a band was due to play later in the evening. There is a pool table at the rear and a small outdoor drinking area to the side of the pub. But frankly, 5 minutes is too long to wait for a drink in a pub such as this. They really need more serving staff and ones that are more competent. Why go here when one of Britain's best pubs (the Wellington) is just around the corner?

Good atmosphere, even if there wasn't that many people. Prompt and friendly service. Shame that there were no real ales on (all the taps were turned round), eventhough this pub is supposed to known for their real ales, this was disappointing.

Curious little pub whose traditional appearance looks rather out of place along a stretch of road with some of the tattiest and least interesting buildings in Bedford. Inside, it is rather dark and has a slightly rustic feel with a selection of fairly basic furniture. Traces of the former Greene King ownership remain visible. Lots of posters advertising live music events. Two of the three handpumps working. Asked for a pint of Pride, but got served Pedigree (albeit in a Pride glass) - sigh!

Attractive cottage style pub a few minutes walk from the top of the High Street. The low ceiling, subdued lighting and quiet background music gave it a nice calm atmosphere. The clientele are mainly from the older generation and I found it a good place for a quiet beer and to write up some notes. Three handpumps although only Spitfire was available.

Not bad, I quite like this pub, with usually 3 real ales on handpump, not too extortionate either, although it does seem to be popular with gays. Don't worry about them if that's not your thing, they won't bother you.

Fun quiz on Wednesdays is quite good.

possibly the best kept real ales in Bedford - though an uninspiring choice..

under new managment sold by Greene King now part of a pub group ? some attempt at rotating ales judging by the blackboard outside but hardly inspirational to be honest especially given the choices at The Bedforc Arms around the corner, occasional live music

I would suggest that if the bird behind the bar really is that deaf that she needs the sound system to be turned up to maximum that the guvnor fits her up with a speaker behind the bar or buys her a hearing-aid....hells bells ..the music was absolutely deafening and we had to shout to each other to be understood and we were sitting next to each other!

This is a very smokey pub in the town center of Bedford even though it serves food, its not ideal if your eating here, if you hate the smell of smoke avoid this pub or take an oxygen mask with you.

New landlords have added some excellent real ales in this small and friendly local. If you like your boozer to be cosy, wood beamed and have great beer then this is the one for you.
