please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Well, it's closed now. According to the Salisbury Journal, the place is now closed with a loss of 20 jobs. The landlord said, according to the paper, "We hung on for 12 years at The Ship but ran out of steam. We have had no help whatsoever through the recession, they didn’t lower our rent and they wanted to put the rent up. If our landlords had helped, we would still be there." And the landlords? Ent*rpr*se Inns. Mind you, I had gone off the place a bit, thanks to its gastro-pub stance and its high prices.

Another example of what used to be a good village pub which no longer is. The Ship used to be a great place to get a cheap meal and a decent pint. Sadly, it no does neither of these things.

Occupying a riverside village site in one of the nicest bits of Wiltshire, the Ship has a beautiful garden and pleasant, unspoiled interior. However, the food is now neither cheap nor wholesome, and the staff are not welcoming or helpful. A lady on the table next to me asked whether she could have a cheese sandwich and was told she could only have what was on the (rather pretentious and very overpriced) menu - so she paid over 9 for a ploughman's.

I tried a pint of 6X and it was almost ice-cold. When I mentioned to the barmaid that it was too cold, she told me "that's because we keep it in the cellar". I didn't argue.

An unenjoyable pint and a depressing experience which I will not rush to repeat until things change.

Turned up on a Saturday evening. "Have you booked?" No. Offered a tiny table next to a very noisy party, so we left. All the symptoms of a tarted-up gastropub. If that's what you want, fine. Otherwise...

Stopped here by chance. I had two great pints of ale, Downton Journeys End, Goddards Best Bitter. Sat in the garden sun blazing down. I will stop here
again. Recommend the ale.

Stopped here for the first time in 2 years not long ago. It HAS been transformed into a trendy gastro-pub, with the emphasis on the "gastro" part. While it was lovely for the (lunchtime) food, I don't think that I would ever consider it "a local"; its more for the Range Rover and Beemer crowd now.

Every time I come down from London I have to visit this place, the location is beautiful and the food is always out standing, that's why they are in the Michelin guide.

I dont know what the last reviewer is on about, I have had their roasts loads of times and you cant beat it.

Keep up the good work guys

Great situation and good pint. Sat in the garden by the river and had Sunday lunch. Food was good but overpriced. Menu said 'home made chips' but they were frozen with a few herbs sprinkled on them. Traditional roast beef lunch was over a tenner so expected carved meat. It was pressed meat which we thought was a bit of a cheek. Seems to be selling itself as a gastro (ie overpriced food) pub but should be a little more true to itself and its customers. They'd rake it in that way. This isn't London, y'know.

Had a break from my bar in London and I have to say myself and my girlfriend found this place to be just what the doctor ordered! Great atmosphere, so relaxed that I could have been drinking in my sleep..... Lovely staff and clientele I will definately be back, food was great too. The landlord Neill told me they were doing B&B soon and I'll be getting away from my bar again as soon as they do. Thank you for a brilliant time.
