user reviews of the Tom Cobley, Spreyton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Many well priced ales and ciders on around 10 ales alone I counted.

Decent beer garden and cosy too inside, this is what people imagine a great British pub should be with a friendly landlord and locals at the bar.

It is a shame as there is virtually no public transport to this village so we had an 8 mile round trip to get here (never take the car to the pub!)

8/10

Superb pub tucked away at the end of the village - couls almost be a set from Tom Baker era of Dr Who! (Anyone remember the Daemons?). Food was great in the evening and breakfast excellent. 8 beers on and all them excellent. Staff attentive and locals somewhat entertaining - to a point... Local drunk bloke slightly annoying until he fell asleep on the floor! Landlord superb, if all landlords were like Roger pub closures would not be going at such an alarming rate.

Like everyone else we found this pub to be simply superb. We visited on 2 occasions at the weekend and found 14 ciders at £3 and 10 ales at £2.90 (Holsworthy's Muck 'n Straw, Forge's Ascension, Hunter's Devon Dreamer, St Austell's Proper Job, Trelawney and Gold Rush, Doom Bar, Skinners Betty Stogs, Teignworthy's Devonshire Dark and Cottage's Boundary). There is a proper beer garden (i.e. it has a rockery, plants and trees) and the food was excellent (especially the chickpea and spinach pie). We had booked tables for both Saturday and Sunday evenings but the large restaurant in the rearmost extension remained unused throughout (everyone at Chagstock according to the locals). If the beer and food weren't enough, what makes this pub even more special are the landlord and his family - thanks Roger for showing me the cellar and telling me your rugby tales! Full marks from me.

This pub gets it all right. Great beer, great food, great prices and a friendly landlord who has time for the customers even when it is busy

Little wonder this pub is rated so highly. Superb choice of well kept beers excellent tasty food and very friendly staff all in a clean inviting pub. My only advise would be if you are not local get yourself a decent map and ignore the sat nav.

Superb pub, 14 beers (All good) and 20 ciders in a bar which has a thatched roof! Food was excellent in choice and quality. Landlord is a great character and they have rooms for B&B which are spotless. Great place and would defo go again - with a room as a couple of beers would never be enough!

Hi there, We were travelling around Cornwall and Devon and were lucky enough to find this outstandingly excellent Pub. The owners Roger and Carol made us feel instantly at home and provided us with a tour of their lovely Pub. The atmosphere was great, food was excellent, very large serves, piping hot and home cooked and was the best food that we had tasted in the UK. I had the sausages and mash, my husband the chicken and our friend the burgers, all were excellent. We can highly recommend a meal at The Tom Cobley, Spreyton as a must do on your travels. I've made two visits to this village and its pub, and both occasions were superb. A really fine list of ales on offer, and the food is just as welcome. The hospitality received was first class, and the place has a great atmosphere. Good bed and breakfast accommodation here too, so this is very much worth the effort to visit, especially combined with some walks/drives around the local area. Gets a Highly Recommended.

This is a gem, a place worth a considerable detour to visit. I can't believe the remark about "mass produced catered rubbish"; the ham I ate at lunch today was home-cooked and as perfect a ham as I have ever encountered, and there was no doubt the wife's soup was home made (leek & cauliflower cheese). The beers are kept well and the ciders are just right. I wish I could get to this part of the country more often. 9/10

Wholeheartedly agree with Trouty, we walked 9 miles to get here, and it was worth every step, one of our best RealAle Quests, and we were not disappointed.
Temperature on all beers sampled was just right, just a shame we ran out of time to sample them all! One of the warmest welcomes and friendliest hosts we have ever encountered.
rioathmusV - 16 Feb 2011 18:38
I booked a night here after a friend recommended it - 20 real ales on tap with about 5 of them dark, all at prices I could only half believe! The locals are very welcoming too, not like some village pubs I've tried

Visited last weekend, for Sunday Lunch - we had booked, and the place was full.
Excellent food, well cooked - roast pork or roast beef - or some of both; everyone had a Yorkshire pudding.
Plenty of veggies, too.
Beer-wise our party was unadventurous, the Otter being praised.
Wine selection [although sub-contracted] was good, and not too expensive.
I would certainly go again - but I'd go without breakfast, too, that day!
I gather the food during the week is more 'pub-foodie' - the Sunday roast is excellent.
Strong eight.

It's not hard to see why this pub is highly rated, with its excellent range of real ales, many of them local - the porters are beautifully kept, with that mellow, warm, nourishing taste that all too often gets lost in the barrel. The pub genuinely has atmosphere, and the food and service get top marks too. The only fault I can find is that there was no hot water to wake up to the next morning, although the accommodation was in every other respect superb.

If you can, get here before opening time and go for a nice walk down one of the nearby footpaths. The local church, dating back to the reign of Henry VI, is worth a look too.

Good beer but my god the food is awful. Mass produced, 3663 catered rubbish. Huge bad food menu, bizarre salads (anyone want kiwi, strawberry and melon with their burger?). Go here for a pint but give the food a serious miss.

Yet again this pub has won the Exeter & East Devon CAMRA branch pub of the year for the 4th successive year, and has now gone into the hat for the South West Regional pub of the year. They continue to serve exceptional quality real ales and food, it is worth the trek where ever you are! Roger is still keeping any where from 15 to 22 ales on at any given time, 6 on hand pump and the rest from his temperature controlled cellar on gravity! This pub is a real testiment on how to stand up to the big wigs that keep putting up the tax on beer and shows that even in the climate where more pubs now than ever before are closing to the public how this can be something that keeps spirits up and is a real heart of the community! People flock to this rural gem from far and wide but Roger and his team never fail on delivering high standards, no matter how hard times are and no matter how demanding some of us can be, their is always a smile when you walk through the door! it can only be 10 out of 10!

Will be closed for staff outing weekend of 10/11Oct, just when we're staying nearby. Disaster! Heaven knows when I'll have such an opportunity to complete a nap hand of this year's poty finalists. No rating left, yet...

Wonderful olde worlde pub, although a bit of a bugger to find.
22 ales on offer on my visit. We arrived shirtly after opening and the landlord was friendly, welcoming and enthusiatic about his beer. All the beer I tried was top quality and it's easy to see why this made the last four pubs in the nationwide CAMRA POTY. Also does food (which look fabulous) and accommodation (a wise idea given its rural location). Bar area is not large but has a real fire. There is a restaurant area upstairs I gather - booking seems to be essential on a weekend.
Absolute gem and well worth seeking out. Considering getting a group together for an overnight stop here next time Colchester play Exeter. Good food, great beer and a place to stay - spot on!

My favorite pub in the southwest. It's got everything you want, good pub food, very friendly staff, a great landlord and a HUGE selection of real ales. You can play safe and enjoy nice golden ales or go on a beery adventure and sup a range of lovely hoppy beverages! On on!
Rosie1001 - 3 Feb 2009 20:35
Read a lot about this pub so as we were down this way we thought we would call in. I am hardly suprised that it has won all the awards it has, 7 cask ales, a good selection and in good order. Really pleasant feel about the place and the welcome was second to none. You may have to look harder now but there are still a few pubs where the people really care about what they do and this is one of them. Keep it up, it's pubs like yours that will survive these hard times!

Roger runs a great pub here, I live about 5 miles away and visited a number of times now. Great hospitality, excellent beer selection and good honest pub food. Gets busy so do book in advance!

An absolute triumph. The two and half hour minibus round trip from Plymouth was worth every last second. The landlord hugely affable, jovial, and knowledgable. Food close to restaurant-standard. 20 ales on offer on Saturday, all of those I tried were incredibly well kept, taking in the likes of Skinners, Wizard, Taunton, and many more majors 'n' micros. A true labour of love as they say.

Now if only I could get a transfer to the Spreyton area..

Wonderful pub -it is relief this sort of pub still exists. An incredible selection of beers kept in tip top condition and very reasonably priced at 2.30 per pint -August 2008. Friendly staff, good food - a character pub. Great atmosphere where conversation dominates
Must stay there and sample some more beers.
hadleigh17 - 19 Aug 2008 22:20
Wonderful pub, supurb range of beer. How can they do it at 2.30 a pint!!?? Landlord passionate about the pub and his ales, just the right attributes for a successful business. Nice to see some 'black beer' at this time of year, usually have to wade through the ever increasing number of 'summer golden ales' to find one
CaptainDave - 12 Aug 2008 12:03
We stayed here recently. Just the odd 23 real ales to choose from - superbly kept. Great homemade food, room excellent, a breakfast to keep you going all day, friendly atmosphere. Roger and his family are dedicated to making this pub a home from home - and how well they do it! But above all, the beers make this pub a must for all real ale enthusiasts.
Pompeybelle - 2 Jun 2008 22:32
Charming pub with busy small front room and corridor to dining area. We couldnt get a table for food but had a choice of 19 ales to go with crisps and nuts. Then were told that some roast beef was spare so tucked into that as well, along with the yorkshire pud and 6 veg. Recommended but book if you want to eat particularly sunday lunch.
lout_from_the_lane - 1 Apr 2008 14:06

What a lovely friendly Pub. I went there one evening when staying close by and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Roger and customers were very welcoming. I am determined to go back again when next down that way and sample the food and hopefully stay the night.

I have been to this pub on numerous occasions and it has never failed to amaze me! In Novemeber 2004 myself and my dad stopped here one evening to have something to eat and a few beers, on entering the pub we were welcomed by roaring log fire, friendly locals and Roger the Landlord. I was amazed to see that he had 14 Real Ales on at any one time some sold via hand pumps and other sold straight from the barrel! Roger allowed us to sample the beer and took great pride over them talking us through each one! through the night we had talked to Roger and we got on the subject of Rugby and the fact that in January Plymouth were playing Exeter, my dad asked if Roger would open early to do breakfast for 5 lads, Roger quickly said yes, so in January we returned on a cold Saturday morning to to be welcomed by Roger, 10:30am we arrived and our table was laid up and we promptly got stuck into our FullEnglish breakfast, at 11am we got our first pints and the beer was again exceptional. We have, of course, returned since and the beer is always in excellent condition, i think most people would want Roger as the Landlord of their local, this year 2006 The Tom Cobley won Devon CAMRA pub of the year and South West regional pub of the year and has now gone forward to represnt Devon in the national awards! This is thoroughly deserved and i hope they win! thanks to Roger for his hospitality and we'll be back soon. If you are ever near Okehampton look on your map for Spreyton, it's a little off the beaten track but it is well worth the visit, you wont be disappointed.

Traditional village pub on the edge of Dartmoor. Great selection of well kept real ales: Sharpes Doom ans Atlantic plus 6 others. Good honest pub food and Restaurant.Bed and Breakfast rooms, well worth a stay over. Roger the landlord is very welcoming and takes pride in running this great pub.
