Used this pub as an away fan several times and always found it a decent boozer close to the footie ground. However on our last visit (25/09/2010) we were refuse entry by a very surly and mildly threatening landlord. I pointed out that we'd used the pub before and it was really good, his response was 'It's changed'. Pub was empty as well and there would have been 30 or 40 Carlisle fans spending money in his pub who would have been no trouble at all! His loss.

Ended up in the Weatherspoons down the road, seems like the only pub round Bournemouth FC that lets away fans in. Shame cos Id always found Bournemouth be a friendly place previously.

Average run down Eldridge Pope/Marstons pub. Poorly kept and crappy selection of beer, indifferent staff, it's only saving grace being the Green Room which is alright as a music venue. 5/10

A rather depressing atmosphere and decor. The bar staff are surly and the ale they serve is badly kept. This is of course if you can even get past the uninterrupted row of locals sat around the bar, who are not very keen that you should get a drink.

I only go here for the green room which I would recommend if you like to watch endless, numbingly boring, crap and overly self-assured bands. Unfortunately my friends do. Otherwise I would steer well clear of this dive.

Strange that such a small nice gig venue (the green room) is attached to such a horrible pub. The decor is aweful, theres dog shit all over the 'beer garden' and the staff are not only rubbish, but mildly terrifying!!!!

Beer not kept very well. Pub got quite busy before the football so I suppose being fairly close to the ground they feel they don't have to try too hard. Running out of one of the few handpump ales during Saturday lunchtime also tends to suggest an indifferent approach to management.

I don't think I would bother returning next season.

Unfortunately The Portman appears to be slowly back sliding in the direction of the bad old days. The decor is becoming tatty, the ales aren't particularly well kept and the dossers are starting to infiltrate the place once again. When I was in there recently an ancient Brummie and an even more ancient Irish chap were shouting at each other from a distance of about 3 feet. Wouldn't have been so bad if either of them had had anything of interest to say but they seemed principally involved in a competition to see who could use the F word the most time in one sentence and at the highest volume.

Unique. A traditional style pub that offers a wide range of live music every Friday and Saturday night. Everything from mainstream to extreme alternative. Now incorporates the fabulous "Sole to Soul" restaurant. Highly recommended.
