please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Red Lion was my final pub of the evening last Tuesday in Oxfordshire. It was fairly busy with people finishing off their meals and a few drinkers like myself. 3 ales were Loddon Hoppit, West Berkshire Good Old Boy, & White Horse Wayland Smithy. I opted for a bottle of the locally-produced Red Dog Medium Dry Cider, which was very nice indeed. Cosy and relaxing environment.

I have been visiting here infrequently for a few years although I have not previously posted and I was aware of a change of ownership abut 3 or 4 years ago. It was always a good friendly local with a choice of local ales and nothing much seems to have changed I am pleased to say. Ales on last night were Loddon Hoppit, West Berkshire Good Old Boy which was lovely and Gundog Ales Boozehound which my wife enjoyed. There was a small jazz band playing discreetly to add to the atmosphere. No food was available being a Sunday evening but they do quite a reasonable trade otherwise. Definitely recommended.

Another cracking village pub that goes some way to offsetting the diabolical standard of the pubs in Didcot itself. Cholsey sausages, egg and chips went down well as purveyed by the amiable landlady and there is a great selection of ales including the wonderful Good Old Boy. Idyllic in aspect.

Possibly the best pub in the area! The staff are always friendly, Sue, the landlady, is a gem! Always smiling and welcoming. It's a traditional pub with local ales and locally scorced home made food as much as possible and caters for most dietary needs.
From french lessons, a beer festival, quiz nights to spec's on the bar for those optically challenged. This is a fantastic 'pub-pub' hence we go there quite a lot.
In such a small community as Brightwell, this place really brings the villagers of this unspoilt village together and draws people in from the surrounding area and beyond.
Well worth a visit - you won't be disappointed.
p.s. dogs are allowed.

Another lovely pub in rural south Oxfordshire, great local patronage by the looks of it when i went here, some good local ales on and a very friendly landlady! very well balanced food menu and well balanced prices which made it easier on the wallet! a good example of how pubs should be!

Since begining to work in the Wallingford/Didcot area, this is the best all-round pub I've found. The people who run the pub are welcoming and make a real effort, the beers combine commitment to local micro-breweries with occasional interesting guest ales. The food I've had has been imaginative and (for this region) not at all expensive. I've tended to use the pub on weekdays, when it is truly relaxing, but busy enough to indicate genuine popularity with locals.

Now under new management and as a centre of village life, with a friendly welcome to all this takes some beating. The food is freshly cooked, and reasonably priced. A good selection of beer and has been voted CAMRA pub of the season. Really worth a visit and if you don't want to go again I would be surprised.

A super local.
Good range of beers (usually 4) including a couple of local ones.
Very tasty freshly prepared food too, reasonably priced.

Excellent pub. Very nice plate of soup (two kinds on offer). Good range of handpumped beers. Dogs welcome. This is what all pubs should be like.

Closed from 3 until 6 on Saturdays, BTW.

Nice small local (with no hint of being 'for locals only') pub with good beer and friendly bar staff. Eaten there a few times - food went through a bit of a wobbly patch but now appears to be back on track - simple, home cooked and reasonably priced. Nice little nooks round the old (non-working) fireplace for cold evenings. Beautiful countryside with some good walks nearby.

Now changed hands, run by two 'ladies of a certain age'.
Spot on beer from just up the road in Appleford.

Perfectly pleasant old village pub, friendly atmosphere, young and old, slightly eccentric landlord. Delicious Hook Norton. Can't speak for the food myself but my mum says it's OK and she does know about these things.

Well worth a detour.

I have been there many times and the food has always been excellent. Above all it is cooked on the spot and not delivered ready prepared by lorry as in the majority of pubs and eating places.
