user reviews of the Somerhill, Tonbridge

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Obviously the latest reviewers had had a bad day at the office as I have not encountered or had a single bad experience in this pub. May be it's best they do stay away or they could make the rest of the customers miserable. It is an old fashioned regulars pub like we had in the old days before the massive pub chains killed off the local pubs. Family run, clean, friendly pub with atmosphere to match. Traditional pub past times, large garden, parking and Sky Sports on request if that is your thing.

A grimy run down pub with a clientele to match. The landlady seemed okay but the occupants where chain-smoking loudmouths spending most of their time shouting and swearing at one another. I had one warm pint and left. I don’t want to be too rude it was more akin to a gypsy encampment.

It's all a bit bare and bleak, telly seems to be on all the time, not my sort of pub at all. Landlady (?) was pleasant enough but I won't be going back

Under new management , about time . The landlady is hard working and friendly , landlord is there every weekend as he works during the week ,he is also freindly . Don't do food yet but have great bar snaks Friday nights and Sunday afternoons . The atmosphere is fun and the beer is great . I think they are getting sky in July or August ready for the new football season . Come on summer as the beer garden is lovely and has an outside bottle bar with BBQ . Well done to the somerhill I will be using the pub regularly .

Recently return to my local pub as it was undernew management - the place was great friendly buzzing atmosphere! Will be going a lot more often now! Altough it does not do food it is very friendly and seems familys are welcome! it has a lovely garden with a bbq outside! i hope they use this is the summer months!!! Good place to start a night out on the town, and also a good place to have a nite in the pub as well!! 10/10 compared to last time!!!

I used this Pub during the early Summer just after it was under new Management. The couple were lovely, really friendly and attentive to all of their customers. The pub was spotless, the toilets were really clean (hand driers were shocking). Popped in this pub a week ago and it was dreadful. The couple who were running it had left and although there was a very nice chap running the pub, it just doesn't have the spark it had before. The heaters have been removed from the smoking area. The main door to the pub doesn't close and causes a real draft, the glass shelves behind the bar are nolonger gleaming and clean, they are dusty and dirty which is why I only had the one drink and was on my way. The bare floorboards in the pub are broken in places and I would have thought a real hazardous mix with customers under the influence! I daren't use the loo as behind the bar was a massive change to how it was back in the early summer, wasn't risking the loos! There were only 6 people in the pub, one being me and my partner, one being the landlord. Not to be revisted in a hurry unless the "New Management" come back - anyone know if they have another pub?

Three of us on a day out went in by mistake having read earlier posts. Found it had new landlord only in two weeks. He was very pleasant, chatty and informative.

This pub is very local to where I live, so I have popped in twice over the last twelve months. I'm afraid that it really is very poor, with an atmosphere of scarcely supressed aggression. I was witness to a commercial transaction that I felt obliged to report to the local police, who were interested but didn't seem all that surprised. I haven't been back since, but hear that the pub has now closed by the freeholder, allegedly due to 'bookeeping errors'.
Wadsy333 - 25 Jul 2011 19:20
Perhaps the criminal record 'helenika' is referring to may be Black Lace's ' Agadoo' on the juke box ........

The Somerhill is a locals pub - something which I feel is sadly missing in these days of chain-pubs full of youngsters (ie ANYBODY younger than me!).
A nice community-centric boozer with regulars who obviously enjoy the place and I can't blame them. I was a first time punter last week and was more than pleasantly surprised.
It also has bands on a Friday, whilst a bit hit and miss depending upon who's playing nevertheless is a commendable thing in these times.
Not really sure sure who the landlord you refer to is, as I was only aware of the landlady who really is a larger than life character, so cannot comment upon the remark made in the posting below.

It's never a good sign when the landlord has a criminal record and can be seen brawling in the street on an average Friday night and rat corpses and (presumably human) turds litter the decking in the pub garden.

It goes downhill from there. Clientele are predominately out of work prostitutes and drink drivers. If you're particularly unlucky you may have withered local mutton gyrating against your leg during appalling karaoke sessions. Best to avoid eye contact with the landlord too.

Truly awful.

Very friendly quiet pub with a nice atmosphere. Had and excellent pint of Harvey Best. Will definately go again

I think this place was still the Hooden Horse last time I visited, but it seems a much more appealing place now. Fairly old-fashioned interior, but smart enough inside and out. Only strange thing was the various groups of pensioners in to get their special-offer lunches, with Eminem and Green Day on the sound system! Nice pint of Harveys.
rpadam - 19 Jun 2008 19:28
quiet is definitely the correct word for this pub. Never any excitement at all and if you are not a regular, don't even expect to be spoken to. food is ok but not anything special and staff could definitely be doing with a kick up the backside sometimes and maybe even a smile from time to time!
there is hope yet!

I'm not bothered in the slightest about whether or not the television is legal. However, I can't fault this pub.
I pop in from time to time when I fancy a quiet evening and I have never had a bad time. The staff are polite and efficient (I have never known them to be drunk)and the food is good. Never any trouble, even when showing football games, which makes a nice change from a lot of other pubs.
Anonymous, I think you have made your point, you dont like the Somerhill. Plenty of others do. How about we just leave it at that?

As the Landlord of The Somerhill I feel complled to write in response to the comments made by anonymous dated 26 Oct.

All I can say is that you are someone that has obviously been barred from my premises as anyone who knows me and knows the type of establishment i run would never make such ludicrus accusations.

How on earh can a pub be better when it was infested with rats. Perhaps thats how you live and you feel more comfortable in that enviroment.

I or my staff have never been drunk behind the bar (I dont allow my staff to drink on duty) and we pride ourselves on the speed and courtessy every single customer recieves.

The Somerhill is not trying to be anything its not. We are predominatley a locals pub purely by the location. We have no car park and 90% of our customers live within the immediate area and walk to the pub.Our trade is directed at mainly over 25s and we are proud to have never had any trouble arising from our patrons.

I am not trying to advertise The Somerhill by any means but felt that anyone reading this site should understand that there are a minority of people who for some reason gain pleasure from discrediting a person or persons and felt complled to respond to this person who does'nt even have the courage to give his name. I am glad you think you do, and posted the comments you have because like me I am sure others reading you comments will see them for what they are.

bit of a sh1thole to be honest when you consider it has been done up about 5 times in the past 10 years. Was nicer when the rats ran the kitchen (I kid you not - it was closed down for this!) than it is now.

Staff are a bunch of ignorant drunks and if you are not a local forget good service - just thank your lucky stars if you get a drink at all and sit quietly in the corner please!

arabic TV is illegal by the way - if you see this anywhere please inform BSB (Sky) and laugh when pubs showing it get their 6000 fine!

1/10

Could be much better, but isn't. An unfriendly place to say the least. Went in mid afternoon with my wife and literally the whole place fell silent. (not a good start)
Only a couple of beers which where expensive. And my wifes dry white tasted like paint stripper.
Has a nice garden in the summer, but the overly local attitude of the punters lets the place down more than anything.

mrse1 - 3 Oct 2006 16:01
It was much better when it was the Hooooden Horse.

Now it's like a dingy local's pub with thick looking staff, but with a "I wish I was modern" sheen. Fails at that though.

Go here if you're a local chav, who likes a nice pine furniture surrounding for your stella and hoop earinged tart.
zaarin_2003 - 26 Sep 2006 13:34

anonymous - 4 Sep 2006 12:58

batman - 15 Apr 2006 13:07
At last ! The pub which used to be the Hooden Horse has been renovated & a very good local pub for this part of town has been saved. It's proving to be a hit with the locals, mainly down to the new landlord & landlady who obviously know what they're doing & the friendly, good staff they employ.Long may it continue.
