It's owned by the hotel behind it, who think it's an inconvenience, but aren't allowed to close it

What a massive disappointment this pub has become. Boring interior, detatched and uninterested staff, and the beer...Doombar!!
With so many breweries locally one wonders what on earth is going on!!
Is this a genuine Free House? We think's not!!

Have never liked this pub, the smell of the food cooking is too overbearing. Prefer the Star.

This is a friendly pub that went up market a few years back. The menu is always interesting and prices are what you'd expect from a gastro pub, nothing frightening. Big rear garden and small front terrace that faces the church, always reminds me of being in a french village. Inside a cosy fireplace is lit in the colder months. A must mention is the stylish toilets. Very pleasant staff. Ok, onto the serious stuff - the two main ales on regular sale - Fullers London Pride and Sharpes Doombar. Both Ales are served to perfection and that is a rare thing these days! Current prices are about 3.50 a pint which is painful to everyones pockets but about average now in country pubs. The big plus is at least you are getting an outstanding pint of beer for your money. There's Aspals Cider and some lagers on for the non-ale drinkers out there. All in all a great place for a quiet pint or to meet up with friends and have a quality meal.

And by the way Fazerblue the pub sells real handmade crisps as opposed to walkers. I guess if you want quality you have to pay for it. Maybe you'll find a pub more suited to your needs in Crawley.

I am a local of this pub and have never been dissapointed. The prices are fair considering the quality and portions. So just to clarify you are complaining about pint of Pride 3.00, guiness 3.40, 2x crisps 1.60??? in that case you better stay at home and buy your drinks from Tesco.
cleolee1 - 25 Apr 2010 21:31
Sara, I am a local and I am sorry to hear of your financial problems BUT your pub is overpriced and I think you need to come down from your aspirations of being a gastro pub and become a good priced local as you will get so much more business
Buster211009 - 4 Apr 2010 20:58
Regarding fazerblue's comments, I am not so sure that is that expensive. In our pub 2 pints of bitter and 2 bags of crisps would be 7.20. Guiness has always been more expensive than bitter but we don't sell it, so 80 pence is not a lot. The Plough is a bigger pub ( higher rates, running costs etc) and employs a number of staff all of which can expect the minimum wage. We have no staff, a smaller pub and are still slowly going bankrupt so I suspect that if we all want to go on enjoying the Great British institution that is the pub we must either do something about this disasterous goverment or expect to spen a little more of what we have left after tax on our beer. It would be interesting for some bored C.A.M.R.A member to work out how much of your pint goes in tax and how little to the publican, I think you might be suprised!

Quaint pub in a lovely rural location with friendly staff. Beer choice is limited - of the 3 available when I visited, the Harveys (one of my favourites) was metallic & bland. Ended up with 2 small soft drinks for 4.70. You think that's steep? I overheard two guys being charged 8 for a pint of Fullers, a pint of Guinness & 2 bags of crisps!! As others have said, there are better (and cheaper) alternatives in the area.
fazerblue - 14 Mar 2010 14:01
Ate Sunday lunch which to be honest was fine but found the price for four people for two courses a couple of beers two soft drinks and a bottle of wine at at about 100 too steep.

Does not represent good value considering there are plenty of good alternatives nearby

We stumbled upon this little gem of a country pub last Sunday and can only say good things about the place. The fires were roaring, the staff were friendly and the food was superb. We have since booked the exclusive private dining room for my husband's birthday. If you like oldy worlde and country this would be right up your street. A true gem, loved it!

Everything a country pub should be. Full of old world charm, low beams, open fires, great beer, friendly staff and superb food. Fed up of chain restaurants in town and are looking for something different and special?, Well if you live in Horsham or the surrounding area, book yourself a cab and head to Rusper for a meal one evening, you won't be dissapointed and you can get a decent pint too.

10 of us went there last night and this place is seriously good. The building is a wondrfull exapmle of old with low beams, stone floors and crafted beams. The service was really freindly and the food was the best we have had in this area. We had a private dinning room which is in the Attic rooms and could not believe such a unique place is on our doorstep. We have already booked our christmas party here. We are really please have found this true chocolate box of pub. Super.
jameshutchings - 15 Nov 2008 08:40
Good staff, good pint of London Pride, and a lively atmosphere. A 16th century building I think, with the lowest ceilings I've ever seen, so watch your head after a few jars, or walk between the beams!

Came here on May Day, very busy, very hot, great bbq great garden. This place rocks!!!!!

We had the pleasure of holding our wedding meal at this pub on the 12th April 2008. Mark could not have been more helpfull in organising and creating menus for both children and adults leaving us nothing to worry about on our special day. The service, atmosphere, food and drink could not have been better. A great time was had by all our 40 guests. We would reccommend this to anyone.

Yeah, it's really pretty nice in here. I wanted a nice ale and a sandwich which is exactly what I received, along with a really friendly welcome from the nice lady behind the bar. They've done a good job
goosegog - 28 Feb 2008 23:22
Just about got the mix between Restaurant and pub right.Visited lunchtime recently, good food and reasonable beer.
jeffdaff - 20 Feb 2008 11:33
Have just moved offices to near Rusper and decided to give the Plough a try for Lunch with my business partner.
In a word .....EXCELLENT !!
Food, wine, service and above all the welcome by landlord Mark all contribute to a great "Gastro" experience.
Give it a try or miss out.

We live in Charwood and we went here as a lot of people have recomended it to us since the refrubishment. We went there on Sunday afternoon and can only give this place ten out ten. The place was humming with activity when we arrived and even though we had not booked the staff could not have done enough to sit us down. Drinks came out fast, the food was very tasty and the atmosphere was lovley. The owner was very attentive and showed great hosting skills. We thought it was super, and will definately return very soon. Good to see a landlord showing a bit of passion. Check out the private dinning room upstairs, beautifull!!

I live locally and me and my wife are thrilled to have this refitted pub on our doorstep. They have done it up in a sensitive mannor maintaining all its charm. The last thing that i would descibe this place to be is cold. The food is rather 'gastro', but it is good to see a pub do something different around here steering away from the usual pub food. We have been to this place alot recently, for eating and drinking, and think it is worth a try or two. The Attic rooms are stunning!
AdamStringer - 19 Oct 2007 08:04
Just visited and i no longer like it.
The atmosphere is now pretentious and out of step with what the locals want. What was a good solid country pub is now overpriced, cold and formal.
The bar staff are ok but not a touch on the friendly banter and congenial humour of Jonathan and Richard.
A real shame that this had to happen. Another good country pub ruined by 'progress'.

Carole - 18 Oct 2007 12:08
Now back open and not at all bad. Very pleasant traditional pub with no sign of the usual refurbisher's antics, plus nice large garden.

Despite the rubric above the food is on the rather expensive and pretentious side - you can get a seven quid panini but not an ordinary sandwich or ploughman's, and kangaroo steak anyone? hmm - and the Greene King related beers are far from local.

At any rate certainly worth a look but remember there are at least two outstanding alternatives within ten minutes drive of here.

A nice little country pub, full of character; low beams, inglenook fireplace etc., plus a good array of specialist beers. I've popped in here a few times now and enjoyed each occasion. Seems a friendly little pub.

What a tragedy, I used to love drinking in the Plough once in a while, the beer was OK, it was quirky and the staff were good fun (anyone remember Paul?). I returned after a few years the other night and couldn't believe how much it has gone downhill, I was aware that the ownership had changed but I wasn't ready for the slide in both quality and manners of the patrons.

On arrival you are faced by a bar-trial by fire as most locals are lined around the bar and don't give the most welcoming of looks towards visitors. It feels like a test of mettle to reach the bar and order one of their very average beers. This pub has been going through several transitions of ownership and I hope sometime soon it gets the landlord it deserves to bring it back to the great country boozer it once was.

Been to the pub several times during the summer and had a lovely meals each time together with very good service and polite staff. However was extremely disappointed when I took friends back in December. The chef has left and the atmosphere has now changed. So disppointed that we shall not be returning again. I would now recommend The Star just down the road!
AnnC - 17 Jan 2007 20:12
We came here in mid November for a family meal. The food was appalling and pricey. The chef's appearance left much to be desired and her manner was rude and incompetent. On hearing of her dismissal we returned for midweek lunch last week, complete difference, superbly presented and served. Good selection of beers for all tastes and the staff now friendly. Recommended.

Lovely Olde Worlde pub with heaps of atmosphere, good beers and live music on Mondays - great!
anonymous - 12 Dec 2006 11:18
Been away for a while, but very glad to come back here. Staff (changed again, though I hope the new ones stay) are lively and friendly, beer very drinkable with a good selection. The fire and the Bar Billiards win me over every time, as does 'Chef'
ColJam - 14 Nov 2006 13:04
Looked in here last Saturday afternoon after having to leave The Lamb nearby at their 3.00 pm closing time.
Most hospitable welcoming landlord here serving a good selection of well-kept real ales open all afternoon on Saturdays (unlike The Lamb). Great log fire. Will return and try the menu next time as well as the excellent locally brewed Hepworths again.
zeitlin - 13 Nov 2006 13:11
There seems to have been a change of ownership since I last visited - the once extensive and imaginative menu, has shrunk to a dull fraction, overpriced.
Three ordinary strength bitters, nothing to get excited about - threadbare feel, there are better pubs around - try the Surrey Oaks in Newdigate

What a lovely friendly pub. Excellent beers and food. A pleasure to visit.
wineforever69 - 1 Sep 2006 13:46
Why can't all pubs be like this? Several beers, Harveys Best and Tongham TEA in great nick on my last visit. Even the staff are friendly!

Very friendly pub, excellent food and atmosphere. A real pleasure to visit
