AVOID THIS PUB !! We went in The Bear Pub on Lewes Road in Brighton recently as it had been quite a few years since our last visit but this was truly a horrible expererience..The current landlady is the most foul mouthed, rude and arrogant person we have ever met and should not be allowed to work in the hospitality or pub industry..Staff spend most of the time smoking outside and only seem to welcome their own "down and out" types similar to themselves..I would not bother with the food either as it looked awful and probably full of fag ash..The good news is that theres some good pubs further down the road such as The Gladstone and The Martha Gun and these seem to be run properly and professionally plus very welcoming with good food..

Went in after a long Sunday, noticed the pub was under new management and thought I would give it a go. After waiting to be served, the pint tasted 'off' and I raised this with the barmaid; she told me that no one else had complained. This might have been the case however both my friend and I thought that the pint wasn't right, due to the barmaid's attitude I just decided to stomach it and move on. While drinking the pint the landlady entered the bar area and told a customer to "F*** off" and called him a "C**t" there was no provocation I could see and in my eyes no need for this language from the staff of a pub in the late afternoon. For the poor customer service and swearing bar staff, I think this is one to avoid. A shame as it was a nice little watering hole before.

Of its area (i.e. a bit rough from time to time; studenty). Three unimaginative cask beers - Harveys Best, Doom Bar and Hobgoblin - seem to be permanent fixtures.

The Gladstone down the road is a better option.

This is a great pub, there is always a great atmosphere whatever is happening and combined with students and locals...you cant go wrong.
Spent many a time hungover enjoying a " Bear Breakfast ", the menu has a great range and now open till 9pm.
Staff are always friendly, warm and make you feel part of the family.
Def a must for anyone to go to...

I used to go here quite a lot as it was pretty convenient to meet friends and watch the football (in the days of 2 a pint Carlsberg here!). Friendly staff and there was usually a recognisable face or two in there whenever I was in. However it's a bit small and poky, not much of a garden, no big screens to watch the football on, difficult occasionally to find a seat.

A friendly and warm place to meet your mates and relax. I go usually with the climbing club and had the pleasure of having Christmas lunch one time. It was a good meal with a very friendly reception.

The best pub in the area, really friendly staff and locals with great food and cheap drinks. Must go for the cooked breakfast!

The atmosphere of this pub is as varying as the reviews already posted here. Very popular with students from the university (the extra walk from the pub closest to the Brighton Uni Moulsecoomb worth it!) and when busy you may well have to wait a while to be served. The selection of real ales served there varies from time to time, but you can usually count on a good pint of Harvey's best.

Having had an xmas meal with the university mountaineering club there, I can also vouch for top noch food!

what a disapointment. bad atmosphere. one abrupt member of bar staff who seemed very put out to be serving us. cheap, but for a reason. one of the quickest stops ive ever made on a pub crawl. wont be making a return visit.

New owners, great friendly atmosphere, clean glasses, good pint & footie. What more could you ask for ?

Just about as quiet as the graveyard up the road.

Quite a good, fun pub, popular with students. But the staff need to take greater care with the beers, which can be a bit iffy.
