What has happened to this place. Spend some money on it. Buy a new sound system thats not very noisey in one part of the pub and quiet in another. Why is it so dead in threre on a friday night? All the different bars that have previously been here have been busy all weekend (Scotts, Slug and O'Neils). Maybe it's time for a change. On a positive drinks are a reasonable price and foods ok. Unfortunatly it is no longer a comfortable place to drink.

I thought this was OK. It's an odd place, with its Irish name but American-themed inside decor, and has a bit of a "rough round the edges" feel to it. No sign of any real ale, but I had lunch here - a hot dog and chips - which was really very nice. I'd definitely come back here again for the food.

More of a restaurant / cocktail bar than a pub. Very little real ale. Good lager selection.

The kitchen serves some very excellent food.

Not a place to visit for real ale, but I got some fantastic German lagers that you don't usual find in UK pubs when I visited.

had a nice sunday lunch here about six months ago so i would go back

This place has sadly gone very down hill. Looking very tired inside and the staff aren't overly welcoming. Often very crowded and can take a while to get served. Expensive too. It's equivalent (owned by the same owners) in Harpenden, "Billy's" is much better.

Poor service, horrible staff and management and over-priced.

OK, here's the situation. I trundle in yesterday, spend 3 (!) on a pint of indifferent John Smiths, drink half of it at the bar, nip to the loo, then return to find that over-zealous staff have poured my drink away. Exterminate! Dire, simply dire.

Very average. If you are a football fan you will love this place mid-week as it is populated by Spurs and Arsenal players. Like both clubs this place is over priced for very average performances. Food isn't bad, it is a long walk to the toilets and the clientele is very "sauf London".

I think this place is great! The cocktails are great and the staff know what they are doing. Maybe you do have to wait for a drink but thats because this is a popular place, with a great atmosphere - there is a good mix of customers and most of the time the music is pretty good. Where else do you get to dance on the bar!

Used to work here and have not yet found a bar which relishes so much fun, most Saturdays end in dancing on the bar.. tequila and cocktales flow freely - good atmosphere, cheap drinks and lovely american/mexican food.

Woeful.
The barstaff are actually quite keen, young and positive, but all the time I'm in here I suspect a Mastermind sitting upstairs, stroking a cat and counting his or her profits.
To be honest, this place is so cold and inhuman it makes my flesh creep.
historyloony - 18 Apr 2007 20:49
Quite a lively atmosphere- however the prices are pretty extortionate, considering it's just a standard St Albans pub.

And to get to the gents, it felt like I had to navigate a level of 'Medal of Honor' just to find it- down stairways, and round corners etc.....God help me if I'd been any less sober than I was!

A woeful bar. Staffed by folk who give the impression they are doing you an immense favour by taking your dough and customered by dross who labour under the misapprehension they are on the Croisette at Cannes. To top this off it's expensive and very dirty.

This place is jam packed at the weekend with 30 somethings looking for a pull (married or unmarried). Getting served is a nightmare and it's expensive.

However, if you've received your divorce papers - it's the place to be seen.
Baw_Heed - 18 Apr 2006 20:28
In a word, appalling.
1) A pint of Boddingtons cost 2.90.
2) The barman snatched the fiver from my hand.
3) Then didn't serve my drink!
4) Luckily one of his colleagues spotted that a pint was still waiting to be served, and put things right.
5) Trying to find the Gents' loo was more difficult than getting through Hampton Court maze.
... By now, it's obvious that me and this place didn't get on!

Economy sized hang out for yummy mummies. Run by the same snobs as it's twin 'Billys' in Harpenden, they obviously want to attract the same type in this place as well. The type could be said to be 'Ive got money, or at least i want you to think I have'.The food however is pretty good American Bistro style fare. However, you wont want to spend too much time here if you believe being accessorised or driving a drop top doesnt actually make you more worthy as a human being than the general proletariat. Still, at least the place doesnt fill up with 18yr olds and it is possible to meet people here who are slightly more intelligent than your standard pint swilling lager heads.

Place is ok. Gets extremely busy at the weekends and you still get people who stand at the bar drinking when they should move out the way so people can get served! Sunday seems a better day to visit this place. Only go there if you have to.
Vavavoom1 - 4 Jun 2005 14:36
This pub is not open til midnight on Sundays!!!!!! Dont know where the person who posted that comment got that from!!
anonymous - 23 May 2005 17:13
Tends to be very crowded at weekends. But this place is great for food, especially on a Sunday as they are one of the only places in St Albans that serve all day long. Extensive cocktail list, and reasonably priced wine list too.
anonymous - 3 May 2005 11:42
This is a nightmare! It is full of yuppie London wannabes. Even for St Albans it's overpriced and is so cramped, it's uncomfortable.
Katherine - 6 Aug 2004 12:17
Loud, busy, spacious. Service ok to poor, suspected pick-up place, the music is an excuse to stay open late, and is usually awful. Sound system poor. Open late Sundays til midnight. Only place locally to do so. Not a good place for real ale.

Absolutely pants, service is awful, never had a good pint in there either
dpiom - 11 Mar 2004 20:16
Not a bad pub very spacey but rammed at weekends which means far too long waiting for drinks and the same shirt wearing brigade seem to congregate here. could really benifit from having an extra bar on the other side of it.live music always sucks here seems to be full of bands who would never get booked at the horn
kevin - 15 Feb 2004 15:57
This pub isn't too bad. It gets so crowded at weekends that it's hard to move but it stays open late. I wouldn't rate the live music though.
anonymous - 29 Dec 2003 17:20
gr8 pub - gr8 atmoshpere, live music now and again - nice place for a friday nite

If you want the real thing go to Dublin.
Austin Powers Jnr. - 4 Jun 2003 21:36
Used to work here - had a very fun atmosphere at the time. Always full to the seams on weekend nights. Has gigs on occasions too.
