This joke of a disgusting pub is a hive of inequity the idiot who manages the place needs a wash
The place cant keep the staff because any young nice looking girl who gets employed there is fair game for this moth eaten excuse for a manager
BE WARNED DONT LET YOUR DAUGHTER NEAR THE PLACE the brewery have been informed and the licencees dont give a damn

Visited the pub one day last week with my partner for a bite to eat after a bike ride down the canal. Food was mediocre, and definitely was not home cooked and fresh (as stated on the menu). Can't say much about the staff and what I presume was one of the owners who was sat in the corner looking like he'd rather be somewhere else. The man behind the bar, which I assume was the manager, was not someone who I would want running my pub. His appearance was atrocious, he looked like he hadn't slept or been home for days and I'm almost certain he had been drinking whilst working as when I was placing my order I could smell alcohol on his breath (which is not ideal for a child friendly pub) and I'm almost certain he had no teeth. However, the girl who served us our meals was very welcoming and polite, I think her name was Gemma. shame that the rest of the staff were miserable, must take after their owner. Won't be visiting again anytime soon! Don't be fooled by the rating I have given as that was purely for the girl mentioned above

The Running Horses as from December 2013 is now under new ownership. As the manager I thought I'd take the time to address some of the issues people may of had in the past and tell you a little of whatvwevare now doing. Firstly we are now a dog friendly pub for friendly dogs. As such dogs are now welcome in the bar area at any time. We would also like to extend a welcome hand to any fishermen who were put off visiting by signs posted outside that have now been removed.
As for the pub itself we now have a new menu made up of good homemade food sourced from the local area. Families are welcome and bookings are taken happily however due to liscencing laws all children must be off the premises by 9 o'clock and only children over 14 are allowed in the bar area. We have also reintroduced live music every Friday and Saturday and have a fine selection of cask ales to help you enjoy your night. I hope to see you all soon.

I was told that this pub/resturant was fantastic and it lived up to this comment. Friendly staff, Landlady and fantastic food made the day a lovely day out for me and my family.

The play area for my family was fantastic.

GREAT PUB!! 10/10

This pub was suggested to me as a friendly outgoing nice day out. It was anything but, I have never known any landlady as rude, obnoxious and stuck up as to what I witnessed in the pub that day. I will certainly not be suggesting this to anyone nor will I re-vist this awful place. Not only was the landlady rude to the customers but she is also rude to her staff.
If this was to under-go new management the place could be worth a visit.

We spent News Years and really enjoyed the evening, the pub was well filled with families. In spite of some of the adverse comments noted on previous comments, It was great with a gopog family atmosphere. We would like to say a special thank you to Carol who did a terrific job in making everyone was well served My Thanks to the Running Horse's for a excellent night Thank You

Responding to the comment about the man who drank in the pub for 53 years, it was a Tuesday evening and i attended the quiz. This man was rude and abussive and called the landlady a robbing bastard!!! i would like to say the landlady politely asked him to leave as he was upsetting other customers in this lovely friendly pub. As far as i can see there is alot of jealous people around and after doing my homework found out the owners in the area which are sucessfull, well done whoever you are keep up the good work and ignore those pathetic people :) keep up the tuesdays and wednesday nights! x

I felt that after only one visit I HAD to give a 10 to this pub. My partner and I (who accompanied with our 18mth old son) are very hard to please, but after reading other personal comments on this site I felt I had to give some balance to the arguement...

We went for lunch (all homemade fare plus lovely warmed rolls with soup)...we couldn't find a seat we were happy with at first and the manager/owner (Belinda) introduced herself and offered to come and find us after we'd ordered to make sure we were kept a table. She was warm and welcoming and completely as a hostess should be in my opinion!?

When our son was starting to play up, Belinda even took time out from her busy sunday service to take my son outside to the secured playground at rear so we could finish our meals in peace!!

I am a dog owner and have taken my dog to numerous pubs and even a hotel in the past, I do not however see it as a god given right to be able to sit in or outside any premises just because it's adjacent to a canal?!

In summary the home made food, fantastic grounds at rear and lovely welcoming landlady made our visit....so much so were already planning our next visit. Cheers Belinda, ignore your haters, lovely place you got... 10/10!!

This pub went downhill years ago. Used to be a great family pub! Bank holiday fundays. It was a proper local pub. Obviously the new owners have no value of interest to the locals and old regulars. My dad has drunk in the pub (his x local) for 53 years only to be barred for questioning the price of a half to a pint!!!!! saying the sums don't add up. Only to be told by BELINDA to get out you old b----rd!!!!! Well she is sticking to her original word that she didn't want past regulars in the pub!!!!!! Good customer service I think not!!!!! If she wants an empty pub she is going the right way about it always new she had a loud mouth too much to say she was the same in school!!!!!!!

Visited this pub for the first time since it was reopened an was not impressed.
After walking 3 miles to get there to take family members to what we thought was
a nice pub we were made to feel unwelcome from the second we set foot on the premises. With signs displayed every few feet on the wall saying what is not allowed, no welcome sign insight though. why on earth have a pub on the banks of the canal and ban people from wearing workwear and fishing clothing or ban people sitting outside with their dogs. When we approached the bar to purchase drinks for adults an one small child we were informed that children were not allowed on the premises after 9 o'clock. We stayed for one very quick drink which was consumed at the very edge of their carpark when a very apologetic member of staff informed us that we were not welcome. The person in question was very sorry an did not agree with the pubs policy but was forced to up hold it. Considering it was a weekend night an all other pubs were busy this one had a mere 3 cars in the car park an not many patrons inside. I feel that this may be because they have banned the majority of people who have previously stopped for a quick drink whilst walking along the canal. Would be a nice lookin pub if a few on the 15 or so of the signs were removed.

This was a regular haunt of mine in the late 80's & early 90's when it was a local comminity pub. I've not been back until yesterday when I decided to see what it is like now. 1st thing I noticed is that it has been extended at both ends to make it quite a long, narrowish building. The exterior has also changed colour from white to a pale yellow. Nice setting next to the Leeds-Liverpool canal with a children's play area to the rear & side with benches & tables to the front. Small entrance with a bar to the left & lounge to the right which has a semi-rustic farmhouse feel. Both rooms look like they have been recently modernised. Single horseshoe bar serves both rooms. Beer wise Speckled Hen, Bombadier & Tetleys with another handpump for guests which was off. Certainly geared towards families & food these days its a pleasant place when the weather is good.

AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE! A COUNTRY PUB SET BY A CANAL THAT NOT ONLY SHUNS DOG LOVERS BUT ALSO DISCRIMINATES AGAINST BLIND PEOPLE AND HAVE RECENTLY REFUSED A PARTY OF 25+ PEOPLE
(ALL PROFESSIONALS WITHIN THE NHS) DUE TO ONE OF THE PARTY NEEDING TO BRING HER GUIDE DOG WITH HER.
EVEN WHEN THE BLIND ASSOCIATION CONTACTED THEM DUE TO THIS, BOTH TONY AND BELINDA EXPRESSED NOTHING BUT IGNORANCE AND INSENSITIVITY INSITING ON THE REFUSAL, DESPITE BEING INFORMED BY THE BLIND ASSOCIATION AND OURSELVES THAT THIS IS UNLAWFUL.
NOT A PUBLIC HOUSE THAT ANYONE WITH A FRACTION OF INTELLIGENCE AND SENSITIVITY, WOULD LIKE TO VISIT.

My family and I have visited this new refurbished pub 3 times in last 2 weeks and every visit has been a pleasure.
The food is outstanding for pub fare, the menu is above average for pub grub, is well cooked, well presented and home-made chips well what more can you say!!
The pub is very modern and welcoming, staff very attentive with service and the outside play area is fab for the kids, both my grandchildren were delighted. After finishing our meals we fed the ducks which was lovely, and each time we have visited it has been really relaxed and enjoyed by all of us.
I could not fault this pub at all, I wish the new owners all the best they are making a real go of it!!

the food was great and very reasnoble and the free ice cream at the end was great!!! alot of people give the owners of this pub a hard time, so i was a bit aprihensive to try this pub.But i can honestley say i enjoyed it and maybe the people who give the owners a lashing my have a touch of the green eyed monster!

This is one of my old haunts and on this visit (14/05/2010) I found it very welcoming. Reading some of the reviews I think some of you have it in for the owners I understand that they own several other pubs in the area so they must be doing something right. As a local I am pleased to see that they are having a go with this place and it can only enhance this area of Lydiate. As for dogs in pubs, not all of us are dog owners or lovers and dont like to be intimidate by a huge slobbering Rottweiler or some such beast sitting with an owner who is drunk and not in control of the dog. I had a very nice pint of ale, the dcor was nice and tasteful and in keeping with the pub and its surroundings well worth a visit I will be going back.

This pub has recently had an expensive refurbishment. I am local to Lydiate and walk my dogs in this area every day. Unfortunately, I am not allowed even inside the grounds of the pub. It would be nice to sit outside on a sunny day after a long walk. But the first thing you notice about this pub is the NO DOGS ALLOWED sign at the front of the pub and another sign in the outside seating area.

Considering this is a canal side pub, I cannot for the life of me, think why there is also a notice by the door, not allowing entrance to anyone with FISHING GEAR. Also NO WORKING CLOTHES allowed.

I would have thought that this canal side country pub, would appeal to the locals. But apparently not.

I agree with some of the other reviews posted. Best travel a bit further up the road to the Scarisbrick, quick jaunt with the dogs along side the canal and then a nice pint or cold drink and sandwich in the sun.

Don't go to the Running Horses if you are expecting a good meal! They advertise 'home made chips and seasonal veg with every main meal'. The chips were of the 'oven chip' variety and the veg was non existent. The steak was supposed to be 8oz rump but it was hammered to 1cm thick and as it only measured 6" by 3" heaven knows how big it was before the hammering! Certainly not 8oz! The 'vine tomatoes' consisted of half an ordinery cooked tomato and the onion rings were of the frozen kind.
My partner had fish, supposed to be freshly battered but looked as if it had been dipped in egg and shallow fried - also I have never seen a smaller piece of fish.
Altogether a most disappointing meal for a new pub hoping to make a name for itself. When I complained about the chips I was told the Chef was exhausted peeling potatoes!

Re-Opened. Wouldnt recommend it though.
Nice decor but the blonde (very common - voice and attitude lowers the tone) was rude and ignorant - ment to to a family friendly pub, but this wasnt the impression. felt out of place and where it should be a relaxed canal side pub, its not. the food was OK nothing to rave about, the Scarrisbrick further along the cannal is much nicer, friendly and there food is faboulous with a hostess that makes you feel welcome and at home - which is what you want!
The beer was expensive aswell, infact all the drinks were expensive.
Overall we have been, seen and never again.
Aside from the only average food, exspensive food the blonde (common as muck) hostess was more than enough to keep me and my family away!
We live in Lydiate, and would expect more - She clearly does not live or come from Lydiate or she would know better and speak and behave with more class than she has shown.
Avoid if you have a family and wish them to feel welcome! (though i would HIGHLY recommend the Scarrisbrick up the road Beautifl food, service and pub!)

Run down boozer by the canal. The current tenants appear to be trying to sell up and it shows. The grass in the kids play area is about 10 inches deep and the whole place looks a bit scruffy.
No real ale being sold so I plumped for a Tetleys kegged mild, you wouldn't think you could ruin that, but they managed it.
Not good.
imdownthepub - 2 Jun 2008 17:50
Good play area for the kids at the rear, but at a price!! alcoholic drinks are fairly priced but dont buy crips, 80p a packet. I'm not talking anout a large packet either. 1.25 for a glass of coke. Real ale has been off on both occasions I visted, ended up swapping for lager both times. Never tried the food, and never will as I'm not going back.

Great little pub!! It might look quiet from the outside, but don't be mislead is really lively inside. Don't miss Betty's Bingo on a Thursday night. Funny stuff and totally outrageous!! You've gotta see it to believe it!! Lovely locals and the atmosphere is great!! Especially of a weekend!!
