user reviews of the Cricketers, Guildford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Pub is finally under new management.

Went tonight - the first time in ages - nice atmosphere - little bit quiet but I hope it'll get better - or maybe turn the music up a little. Food menu was not the most imaginative - pub classics only - but went for the safety of a burger which was actually surprisingly good with awesome chips!

Good range of ales.

Will definately be going back now.

Would be interesting to see what you base your comment on becs83 as you`ve not made comments on any other pub.
Do we put out a Roland alert ?????

I don't normally post reviews on this sort of site, but I visited the Cricketers over the bank holiday weekend and had such a lovely time that I was really shocked to see so many negative reviews on the site. It was a great place to go for a proper pub lunch in the sunshine, and I'll definitely be making a return visit. The staff were all lovely too, so again, really surprised by other people's reviews.

We went down for the pub quiz for the first time on Thursday a couple of weeks ago and had a brilliant time. It starts at 9pm which was great, we had some food first (I'd recommend booking a table because it was rammed) and then we played the quiz. There was a good mix of multiple choices, brain teasers and a news round which everyone in our team could have a good go at. The small prize goes each week but there is also a jackpot which everyone can win (this rolls over each week until it is won so even though we are rubbish at quizzes there is a chance we can win, which is really nice because we always loose the quiz!). The bar staff were lovely and there was a good selection of wines by the glass. I was surprised reading some of these comments because I thought the landlord and landlady were great. We'll definitely be going back.

This is certainly not a pub that we would recommend. Having taken the trouble to visit the pub earlier in the day to book a specific table, we were disappointed and indeed incensed to find that our table was occupied by another couple upon our arrival. The table not only had a reserved sign on but also our name. It is inconceivable that the other couple and the pub staff were not aware of our reservation. We were made to feel the guilty party and our complaint to the manager was poorly handled. We have no intention of visiting the pub again as there are far nicer and more welcoming public houses in the vicinity of The Cricketers.

Visited this pub against my better judgement the other week and was reminded just what an ignoramous the landlord could be with his customers. Sadly he has an attitude of him always being right.

Beer cloudy and not kept very well, food has become somewhat expensive for what is little more than 'boil in the bag' stuff. Oh! and the plates appear to have shrunk in size - what a joke!

Steer well clear, try the Royal Oak for better selection of beers (which are well kept as one would normally expect) and an amiable and well mannered landlord.

I visited on New Years Eve with my wife . This was a ticketed entrance day due to the date and the availability of a band - fair enough. The car park was mostly empty and there were very few people in the pub so I decided to go in and listen to the band and welcome in the new year.

It was past 2300 hrs and I requested two tickets. However, I was bluntly told that the event was fully sold out and asked to leave by the landlord!

So what you might think - but wait, I am in my 50's, I held my wedding party at this pub and had visted on many occasions to eat. If not a daily regular I am at least one of the better clients.

And as it was past 2300 hrs, the landlord new that I wouldnt be able to get to another venue before midnight so why was I bluntly turned away? Why was there still a sign outside the pub advertising the evening and tickets?

BTW - the food at this pub has gone down hill steadily over the past 12 months in line with the prices going up.

Personally, I recommend that if you find yourself in this area and need a decent pub to eat, go on to the Swan at Ash Vale where you will get much better beer and a very, friendly welcome!

Not the place to go if you're into real ale. Despite having four or five decent sounding ales available you wonder what on earth the cellarman does with it. I suppose cloudy is his speciality. He could do with reading the CAMRA magazine that's available in the pub and visiting some of the highly rated pubs in it. A clear, almost shining beer always shows that someone cares for what they are selling. Not so at the Cricketers - high prices and a cloudy glass that is begrudgingly topped up to make a full pint is what you get here. Don't know about the food - if it's as bad as the smell that fills the bar and then your clothes.....................!! If you want decent well-kept beer at this end of Guildford go to the Royal Oak at Wood Street. You'll also benefit from a warm welcome from a landlord who cares.

I recently tried to organise my babies baptism party on a sunday lunchtime at this pub. I could simply not BELIEVE the response I was given on requesting a buffet for x25 when we had x30 adults and x20 kids. After being told it was 10 per head (rip off given the menu, and that you can eat a meal for 5 in there), we we told that children were unwelcome in the bar and would basically have to stay outside, that a buffet for under the amount of people there were wasn't a 'usual scenario' and that we were not welcome in the restaurant part because of locals. The landlord basically acted like he was doing us some kind of favour and was totally put out by our request, rather than receiving an offer of an extra x50 paying guests at his pub! Friends of ours have also had several bad experiences, including being told that children are not to make noise, when there is a clear sign on the door saying 'families welcome'. They really don't deserve repeat business, especially as the food is really not that great either! My advice; go to the Worplesdon place; at least they make you feel wanted!!

Glad to know that I am not the only one to suffer at the hands of an extremely RUDE landlord. I have been to this pub 4 times now and have been met with surly and unfriendly staff every time. However today was beyond rude. I used my mobile, I was sitting away from anyone else, the landlord approached me and told me very rudely that I am not permitted to use my mobile in this pub. I pointed out that I was not near to anyone else and that if this is the case he should have a sign up stating that, so he pointed to a small list of rules on the bar and told me that somewhere in there it is stated that mobile use is not permitted. He was extremely rude to me I have never been treated like this in a pub before, I am disgusted!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not bad all in all but dont stop out this end of town much maybe worth eating here if the landlord isnt a complete pig.
Desperate4Beer - 22 Aug 2009 17:25
Well to say that the Landlord is rude and arrogant would be an absolute understatement. Just last Saturday night I heard him telling a customer would had apparently previously complained about one ale being very yeasty that he would take No Complaints Whatsoever and that he was now operating a no tolerence strategy on ALL such future complaints by him or others.
It was akin to being a verbal attack on the gentleman almost as soon as he entered the premises and has certainly put me off venturing in there again.

Mostly the beer is good although I also find that apart from the high prices that on occasions when the barrels have been 'tipped' they become over yeasty presumeably by not doing so carefully. In all not a public house to be recommended.

four average unexciting ales and very expensive, not worth the trip

Landlady friendly and helpful. Sunday carvery lovely. Garden great for families.
gtowngal - 28 Jul 2008 13:41
Visited Sunday afternoon and frankly I believe the recent reviews are somewhat unfair. Sat in the garden with 2 year old grandson (hot day). Hogs Back TEA was fine and I thought food was good if a tad pricey. Service was fine (agreed the bar wasn't particularly busy). Oh and a Hodgsons Kingston Brewery plate displayed in the fireplace.
bobinman - 12 May 2008 01:02
Difficult to get served as bar surrounded by locals, beer overpriced and not a full pint had to ask for a top up from unhelpful bar staff. Wont be going back
biggles01 - 27 Apr 2008 11:37
burnt hard dry scampi.

nothing else need be said.

Having not visited this pub for several years now, I'm slightly adrift on what appear to be far reaching changes in customer expectations. Specifically, and as an old Guildfordian myself, I can't for the life of me understand why parents would wish to take a baby into a public house. Forget any claptrap that's written about 'restaurants' in pubs, pubs are places that may sell food. They are not restaurants that sell beer and who on earth would want to subject a baby to a raucous environment. No rating left as I remember this pub as a superb place.
Biker - 22 Jul 2007 10:52
Busy Pub, Landlady a bit grumpy.
Nice garden swings etc, for the kids.
Hard to get a drink at the bar as all the locals surround it, quite a few chavs.
Food O.K.

Rating=5

Beer OK, usually have some kind of real ale, food OK, has a good sized beer garden which is nice in summer.
guildfordgrecian - 31 Mar 2007 21:22
We found the food decidedly average. It was quite smoky in the restaurant area. We found one of the serving staff to be incredibly rude. She asked us to remove some tissue from the table (which was there because the baby had a cold), compaining that the other patrons might be offended. She also complained about us seating the baby on the edge of the table. Her comment was "this is a restaurant, you know".

We though was an interesting comment, given that it was hardly the most upmarket pub/restaurant we'd been in. We were sitting there quietly, the baby was behaving very well, yet the party opposite were being incredibly raucus and she saw fit to complain to us. Suffice to say, we won't be returning.
